Sultan al-Malik al-Zahir Saif al-Din Barquq bin Anas bin Abdullah al-Sharkasi, was born in the Caucasus in 1340 AD (740 AH) and came to Cairo at the age of 20 to join the Egyptian army, where he mastered the arts of war and horsemanship, and rose in military positions and ranks of the emirate, where he became Emir of Tablkhana, then Emir Akhor then Atabka in 779 AH.
