Yangshuo County, a part of Guilin City, has one of the best natural beauties in China. The Li River and Yulong River are part of this beautiful scenery and make for fine sightseeing, whether you do so on the water by boat or bamboo raft if you choose to ride through. West Street is the main thoroughfare of Yangshuo which has attracted countless tourists from abroad. With many coffee shops and Western restaurants on this street, it is also known as Westerner Street. Yangshuo is well-known for outdoor activities, especially rock climbing among karst land formations. The rock climbing business here is already considerably developed, with various challenges for travelers to explore. There are also activities like hiking and cave exploration for visitors to try out.

Yangshuo Transportation
Yangshuo's transportation network is well-developed, primarily relying on its railway station and long-distance bus services for intercity travel. Yangshuo Railway Station, also known as Xingping Station, is situated approximately 22 kilometers from downtown Yangshuo and serves as a key hub for high-speed trains connecting to cities like Guilin, Guangzhou, and Guiyang. To reach Yangshuo from the station, passengers can take a special bus line from the coach station near Shima Yuanpan in Kangzhan Road, which takes about 60-70 minutes and costs CNY 20. Long-distance bus services are another major transportation option, with buses connecting Yangshuo to various cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Nanning. The central bus station in Yangshuo is located on Pantao Road. For those arriving at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), an airport express bus is available, taking about 90 minutes to Yangshuo Bus Station, which is centrally located and close to the Ten-Mile Gallery Scenic Area.

The town is well-known for its variety of accommodation options, which are largely concentrated around major tourist hubs such as West Street, Xingping Ancient Town, and the areas around Shili Scenery Gallery.
Yangshuo Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Yangshuo is from April to November. The weather is sunny and conducive for cycling, rock climbing, and boat trips. During April and May, you can enjoy mists beside Li River after rain, the freshly green foliage, and canolas. Autumn (September to November) provides less rain and hot-to-mild sunny weather, ideal for enjoying the golden paddy fields and outdoor adventures. October is particularly notable for the scent of osmanthus flowers, adding a unique olfactory dimension to the travel experience.

Yangshuo Moments: Through Travelers' Eyes
Many people ask me: Should I choose sunny or rainy days to visit Guilin? Honestly, I used to only pick sunny days. It wasn't until I encountered rain in Yangshuo once that I realized Guilin is quite beautiful on rainy days too. Here is what to photograph on sunny versus rainy days, how to shoot with your phone, and the best time to visit. 📍Best months to visit Guilin (it mainly depends on what you want to photograph) March–May: Guilin's spring rainy season. There's a lot of fog and rain, and the mountains are often shrouded in mist. It's great for photographing the misty Li River and capturing an ink-wash painting aesthetic. However, it rains frequently during this time, so your itinerary might be disrupted—be prepared for that. September–October: Guilin's dry season. There's little rain, the sky is clear, and the weather is comfortable. It's perfect for shooting grand sunny landscapes, sunrises and sunsets, clear reflections on the Li River, and the autumn harvest at the Longji Rice Terraces, where the mountains turn golden—very photogenic. June–August: The peak of Guilin's rainy season. In June, it rains almost every other day, and heavy fog often blankets the river. But it's not impossible to visit during this time; the mist after the rain is stunning, and since it's summer vacation, your schedule might be more flexible. Sunny days start to increase from late July, and the river becomes clearer in August, though it gets a bit hot and crowded. December–February: Winter. There's little rain, more sunny days, fewer tourists, and prices are lower. The only downside is the low temperature; the average in January is only about 9 degrees, so think twice if you're sensitive to the cold. 📍What to photograph on sunny vs. rainy days On sunny days, the light in Guilin is harsh, the contrast is high, and the colors are vibrant, making it suitable for grand landscape portraits and sunrises/sunsets. For the Li River peaks, use the 5x telephoto lens on your phone to compress the mountains together, which brings out the sense of depth. For portraits on sunny days, the light is soft before 8:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. It's great for side-backlighting, giving your hair and shoulders a golden rim light. Guilin on a rainy day is completely different. The light is soft, the contrast is low, and the whole world is a blue-gray, like an ink-wash painting by an ancient artist. Don't shoot standard grand landscapes at this time, as the fog will make them look gray. Instead, focus on details and mood. Shoot a lone tree in a field on a cloudy day, with the tree and distant mountains veiled in mist. Combine rice paddies and mountain peaks; the paddies are especially green after the rain, contrasting with the blue-gray mountains. For the Longji Rice Terraces, take overhead shots of the geometric lines of the terraces amidst the clouds and mist. As the mist flows between the mountains, the grand view becomes an ink-wash painting. 📍How to shoot with your phone on rainy days 1. Turn off HDR. If you use HDR on a rainy day, the image will be brightened, and the layers of fog will disappear. Turn off HDR, long-press the screen to lock focus, and drag down the little sun icon to lower the exposure by 0.3 to 0.7 stops; the layers of mist will immediately appear. 2. Use 2x or 5x zoom; don't use the 1x main camera. 2x to 5x zoom can compress the mountains and fog together, creating more of an ink-wash painting feel. 3. Turn on Live mode. The fog and wind are moving on rainy days. After pressing the shutter, you can select the frame in Live mode where the fog flow looks most natural. I personally prefer Guilin on rainy days. It's less crowded and quiet, and the entire landscape is veiled in mist, like an unfinished ink-wash painting. Sunny Guilin is for tourists; rainy Guilin is for those willing to wait. Next time you go to Guilin, don't just wait for sunny days—try picking a rainy one.
