Gyeongju Gameunsa Temple Site

Geunsa Temple is a temple built by King Munmu of Silla who unified the three kingdoms. Now all but two stone towers up to 13.4 meters have been burned down. Thanksgiving Temple was built by King Wenwu in order to drive away the invasion of Japanese pirates with the help of Buddha's blessing. However, King Wenwu died before he saw the completion of the Thanksgiving Temple. In his last words, he requested that he be buried in the East China Sea, 500 meters away from the Thanksgiving Temple. He hoped that after his death, he would become a dragon in the East China Sea and continue to defend the country. Therefore, King Moon Mo was buried by water in the East China Sea near Ghana Temple. The name of the temple was named Ghana Monastery when King Moon King, son of King Moon Mo, thanked his father for his favor when the temple was completed in AD682.
