Cabbage area was originally a cabbage growing area, and the residents were working class of middle and lower class. So the buildings here did not have the luxury and grandeur of the wealthy area, forming a Victorian style of small-scale architecture. Now the streets here have gradually evolved into a strong commercial street.
There are lots of nice little shops and coffee stalls. The old houses here are interesting. Not every place in this area is well maintained, so be clear where you are and when you are visiting. It is interesting to find out the changes that have come with the times.
It is said that during the Industrial Revolution, Irish immigrants could not afford to live in the city before they moved here. Housewives planted cabbage and potatoes. So it is called the cabbage area. After 1950, the slums became characteristic streets. Now many restaurants and shops are here and become a popular attraction in Toronto.
