Chongli Ski Resorts: Thaiwoo vs Wanlong vs Genting for Your First Beijing Ski Trip

Author's Profile Picture

Chongli is among the easiest ski destinations to access from Beijing, with high-speed trains running from Beijing North or Qinghe to Taizicheng in roughly one to 1.5 hours. Second-class ticket prices depend on the station pair: Qinghe to Taizicheng costs around RMB 84–93, Beijing North to Taizicheng around RMB 89–99, and Beijing North to Chongli around RMB 108. Resort shuttles link Taizicheng Station to the main ski areas.

For your first visit to a Chongli ski resort, Thaiwoo is the best overall option for families, beginners, and mixed groups, while Wanlong suits advanced skiers better thanks to its challenging terrain, and Genting is ideal for Olympic venues and modern lift infrastructure.

You can also travel with your own skis through China Railway’s bookable ski equipment service. Your station choice and transfer arrangements ultimately depend on the resort you select.

Plan your ski weekend with Beijing flights, Chongli resort hotels, and a China eSIM.

Thaiwoo

Thaiwoo makes the most sense for families, beginners, and mixed-ability groups. It's roughly 510 meters of vertical, combining groomed cruising terrain with a substantial beginner area, while the walkable resort village adds restaurants, shops, and other activities. Weekend crowds can build around the base. Advanced skiers looking primarily for sustained steep terrain should look elsewhere.

Wanlong

Wanlong is the choice for confident intermediates and advanced skiers. Its roughly 550-meter vertical and more demanding terrain make it the most skiing-focused option here. Beginner terrain is comparatively limited, and the base is more functional than village-like. Avoid it if your group includes first-timers or non-skiers expecting a destination-resort atmosphere.

Genting

Genting suits freestyle riders, Olympic sports fans, and skiers who value modern infrastructure. Its vertical drop is about 398 metres, and the resort offers broad terrain and Olympic-era facilities, with night skiing available during selected periods. Weekend terrain parks can attract freestyle crowds. It is less suitable if your priority is maximum vertical or a traditional alpine village.

High-speed rail from Beijing North and Qinghe

High-speed rail is the easiest way to get to Chongli for most ski trips. Around 17 trains a day may run from Beijing North to Taizicheng, depending on the date. Second-class ticket prices vary by route: Qinghe–Taizicheng costs about RMB 84–93, Beijing North–Taizicheng about RMB 89–99, and Beijing North–Chongli about RMB 108.

The journey to Taizicheng takes as little as 58 minutes from Qinghe and around 1 hour 19 minutes from Beijing North. If you're skiing at Thaiwoo, Wanlong, or Genting, Taizicheng is the main station to aim for. Resort shuttles run between the station and nearby ski areas, but they're timed to meet certain train arrivals, not every service.

Don't assume there's a standard “last train” to catch. Train times vary by date, so check 12306 for your return journey before planning your ski day.

The seasonal ski coach

The seasonal direct ski coach is a good option if you're flying into Beijing or want to avoid the hassle of switching from a train to a resort shuttle. Winter services connect Chongli with Capital International Airport, Daxing International Airport, and Beijing South Railway Station. Capital Airport has two round-trip coach departures a day, while Daxing Airport and Beijing South each have one.

The main advantage is convenience: you can leave your ski bags in the luggage compartment and stay on the coach until you reach the resort area. The downside is the longer journey. Traffic leaving Beijing, mountain roads, and winter weather can make the trip several times longer than it would be by high-speed train.

Since these services only run seasonally, don't assume coaches operate every day or follow the same schedule. Check both your outbound and return journeys for your travel date, especially if you plan to ski until the end of the day.

Driving and why the train is easier

Driving gives you the most freedom, especially if you're traveling with a group, bringing bulky gear, or planning to visit several resorts. The drive from Beijing to Chongli takes around 2.5–3.5 hours in normal conditions, but winter weather can add quite a bit of time. You'll also need to deal with snow, ice, visibility, mountain road conditions, fuel, tolls, and parking.

If you're traveling as a couple or a small group with standard ski bags, taking the train is usually easier. You won't have to worry about driving on mountain roads or finding parking at the resort, and China Railway's dedicated ski-gear service lets you bring eligible equipment along.

It's worth planning your return trip carefully, too. If you leave the mountain in the late afternoon, you may not have much time to return your equipment, catch the resort shuttle, or deal with road delays. If you're driving, check the winter road conditions before leaving Chongli instead of assuming the journey back will take as long as the drive there.

Arriving by air

If you're flying into Beijing for a ski trip to Chongli, Capital International Airport (PEK) and Daxing International Airport (PKX) are your two main options. During the winter season, direct ski coaches run from both airports to Chongli, so you won't have to haul your ski bags across Beijing to catch a train.

Capital Airport has two dedicated round-trip resort coaches a day, while Daxing has one. Alternatively, you can travel from the airport to Beijing's high-speed rail network and take a train to Taizicheng. This means more transfers, but you'll get the speed advantage of rail for the main part of the journey.

If you're arriving on an international flight, taking the airport coach may be the easiest option for your first day. For later trips between Beijing and Chongli, high-speed rail is usually more efficient. Either way, check your return connection before heading out to ski. The last train or coach depends on the date, and if you miss it, you could end up needing to stay overnight in Chongli.

Pair your ski plans with Beijing flights, comfortable hotels in Thaiwoo, and China eSIM connectivity.

Can you take skis and snowboards on the train?

Can you take skis and snowboards on the train?

China Railway now offers a dedicated ski-equipment service on eligible trains, but don't assume you can bring a full-size ski or snowboard bag on board as regular carry-on luggage. The service lets you take eligible equipment on the same train for RMB 68 per set, as long as it meets the size and weight limits.

If your gear doesn't meet those requirements, you'll need to arrange railway consignment or rent equipment at the resort instead. To avoid last-minute hassles, book the ski-equipment service when you reserve your train ticket and leave extra time for station screening..

What to arrange before departure

  • Easy travel with snow gear: Available on eligible G- and D-series services. The current fee is RMB 68 per set.
  • Size limit: Equipment handled through the onboard service must have a combined length, width, and height of no more than 200 cm.
  • Weight: The railway's passenger baggage allowance remains relevant, with an adult passenger generally limited to 20 kg of luggage.
  • Booking: Reserve the ski equipment service via 12306 after confirming that your train supports it.
  • Booking cut-off: Reservations close 10 minutes before departure.
  • Cancellation: Free cancellation is available up to one hour before departure.
  • Oversized equipment: Equipment exceeding the 200 cm combined-dimension limit must be sent via railway consignment.
  • Consignment deadline: Arrange consignment at least 30 minutes before departure.
  • Consignment weight limit: The limit is 20 kg; confirm applicable conditions with China Railway before traveling.

What happens at security?

Pack your skis or snowboard securely and give yourself extra time at the station. Your gear must pass railway security screening, just like your other luggage. Staff may ask to inspect approved oversized equipment manually or direct it through a separate handling process. Before packing, check the latest railway rules for prohibited or restricted items, especially aerosols and sharp tools, to make sure you can safely bring them along.

The easiest alternative: rent

For a short first trip, resort rental can be simpler than transporting equipment from Beijing. Thaiwoo, Wanlong, and Genting all offer rental services, allowing you to travel by train with a standard bag and collect your skis or snowboard upon arrival. This also eliminates the need to coordinate a separate gear reservation.

Staying in the resort village

Thaiwoo, Wanlong, and Genting all have hotels near their ski areas, but don't assume every hotel offers ski-in/ski-out access. Before booking, check how far the property is from the lifts and whether you can walk there easily.

Some hotels are just a few minutes from the lifts, and dedicated ski storage or lockers can help keep wet boots and gear out of your room. Breakfast hours are worth checking, too. If you want to get on the slopes early, look for a hotel that serves breakfast from around 7 a.m.

Family rooms and larger suites can be hard to find, especially from December through February and during Chinese New Year, when rooms for peak weekends can sell out quickly.

The biggest benefit is saving time. You can wake up, have breakfast, get your gear ready, and head straight to the lifts without worrying about transport.

Staying in Chongli town

Staying in town can save you quite a bit on accommodation, but you'll need to factor in the cost and time of getting to the mountain. Depending on the resort and road conditions, the drive takes around 15–25 minutes each way.

A hotel shuttle that gets you to the mountain before the lifts open is ideal, but schedules vary, so check the morning and evening departure times before booking. It's also worth asking whether the hotel offers secure ski storage, what time breakfast starts, and whether family rooms are available.

Staying in town is a good choice if you're looking for cheaper rooms and more local restaurants to choose from. However, it's less convenient for beginners, families, and anyone who wants to catch the first lift of the day.

What does a Chongli weekend cost?

What does a Chongli weekend cost?

For two adults spending two nights at Thaiwoo on a January weekend outside the holidays, a realistic budget for an independent ski trip is around RMB 8,600 in total, or RMB 4,300 per person. That covers lift tickets, rentals, a lesson, slopeside accommodation, meals, train fares, and ski-gear transport. Costs can vary significantly depending on the resort, room type, and travel dates, so use this as a rough planning guide rather than a fixed package price.

When should you book?

Peak season means higher accommodation and mountain product prices, particularly from December through February and around major Chinese holidays. For a weekend trip, book in this order:

  • Hotel: About 30 days ahead, especially for slopeside rooms and family accommodation.
  • Train: Book as soon as the booking window opens, currently 15 days before departure
  • Ski-gear service: Immediately after securing your train, if you are bringing equipment.
  • Lift passes, rentals, and lessons: About 7 days ahead, with lessons booked earlier if you need an English-speaking instructor.

The biggest savings come from choosing town accommodation rather than cutting essential ski time or equipment. For a first trip, lock down the hotel and train first, then build the mountain costs around them.

What should you budget for?

Staying at the resort costs more upfront, but you'll save time and avoid daily trips back and forth. Staying in town means cheaper rooms, but you'll need to factor in transport costs and the extra hassle of getting to and from the mountain each day.

Choose a hotel in the resort village if convenience, family-friendly access, and more time on the slopes are your priorities. Chongli town is a better fit if you want to spend less on accommodation, have more dining options, and don't mind the daily commute, especially on a longer trip.

What other ski resorts are worth considering beyond the big three?

What other ski resorts are worth considering beyond the big three?

Chongli has several smaller ski areas worth considering if Thaiwoo, Wanlong, or Genting does not match your group.

Resort

Best suited for

Night skiing

The main reason to choose it

Fulong Snow Park

Families, snowboarders, evening skiers

Yes, selected evening terrain

Convenient location and lifestyle facilities

Cuiyunshan Galaxy

Beginners and intermediates

Seasonal

Easy access and manageable terrain

Duolemeidi

Budget travelers and quieter ski days

No regular night skiing

Smaller, less crowded experience

Which other resorts are worth considering?

  • Fulong Snow Park is the best choice if you want to ski after dark or stay close to Chongli town. Its floodlit slopes and family-friendly facilities make it a good fit for groups where everyone has different interests.
  • Cuiyunshan Galaxy is a better fit for beginners and intermediate skiers looking for a simple day on the slopes without committing to one of Chongli's larger resorts. It's also close to Chongli's transport network, making it a convenient option for shorter stays.
  • Duolemeidi is worth considering if you prefer a quieter day on the slopes and want to keep costs down. It's a smaller resort, though, so you'll find fewer facilities, and regular night skiing isn't available.

When does the Chongli ski season run?

Opening dates depend on snowmaking, temperatures, and each resort's plans, so there's no set date when the ski season starts each year. Some resorts may open a few runs in late October or November, but more slopes usually open from December onward. You can still ski in March, although conditions become less predictable as the weather warms up.

If you want the best chance of good snow and plenty of open runs, plan your trip between December and February. It's generally the easiest time to enjoy Chongli's ski resorts at their best.

What can non-skiers do?

A non-skiing companion does not need to spend the weekend in a hotel room. Fulong offers indoor entertainment, dining, and leisure facilities, while Thaiwoo's village provides restaurants, cafés, shops, and places to walk without skiing.

The Zhangjiakou Olympic venues, including the Snow Ruyi ski-jumping complex, also provide sightseeing options for visitors interested in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Good ski resort for sure, has everything you need and good runs. However, equipment rental is a bit underwhelming. Equipments are not in great quality, this is something to consider. Private rentals elsewhere or bring your own equipment

We had a great experience at Thaiwoo Ski Resort! The resort is very well organized, with a wide variety of slopes for different levels. The pistes are well prepared, and the area is beautiful, especially in winter.Everything is convenient and easy to navigate—lifts work smoothly, and the overall atmosphere is fun and lively. There are plenty of places to rest, eat, and warm up between runs. It’s a great place for both beginners and more experienced skiers and snowboarders. We really enjoyed our time here and would definitely recommend Thaiwoo Ski Resort to anyone coming to Chongli for winter sports.

This was the best part of the trip... We're giving it to you! Love it so much, completely smitten. First time ever experiencing -14 degree Celsius temperature. First time ever seeing snow, even if it was real or artificial, it didn't matter. Everything was convenient, and the view was amazing.

What are the common mistakes and how can you avoid them?

What are the common mistakes and how can you avoid them?

Chongli's ski logistics are straightforward when the station, gear, tickets, and transfers are arranged in the right order. Most problems arise when travelers assume that resorts operate like a single destination or treat ski equipment as ordinary luggage. Here are the seven mistakes most likely to disrupt a weekend, along with practical recovery options.

Mistake

Why it happens

Recovery

Wrong station

Chongli has multiple rail stations serving different resort areas

Take a taxi or ride-hailing car from the station to your resort

Missed gear-service cut-off

Ski equipment capacity must be arranged in advance

Ask about the railway consignment or rent at the resort

Arriving after the last shuttle

Free resort buses do not meet every train

Use the station taxi rank or ride-hailing service

Oversized gear

The onboard ski service has a 200 cm combined-dimension limit

Repack, consign the equipment, or return

Wrong lift pass/date

Resort booking systems can be easy to misread

Contact the resort ticket office immediately

Wrong rental size

Peak-weekend demand can exhaust common sizes

Try another rental outlet before skiing

Underestimating cold

Upper lifts can feel substantially colder in the wind

Add face and hand protection, and use warming areas
