1

Shurijo Castle

arrow-image

Kicking off our Naha journey, we step into the past with a visit to the majestic Shurijo Castle, a beacon of Okinawa's history and culture. As a proud UNESCO World Heritage site, the castle is a reconstructed symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom, showcasing a blend of Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan architectural influences. The iconic Shureimon Gate, adorned with the 'Nation of Propriety' inscription, stands as a testament to the cultural exchange between the Chinese Emperor and the Ryukyu King. Visitors can marvel at the paifang-inspired gate and the vibrant red tiles that reflect the resilience and spirit of Okinawa. The castle's storied past, marked by periods of destruction and rebirth, echoes through the halls, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in the grandeur of a bygone era.

Shureimon

arrow-image

A mere 10-minute contemplation at Shureimon, the second stop on our historical exploration, reveals a structure that is not only a World Heritage site but also the face of the 2,000-yen banknote. This gate, a cultural emblem of Okinawa, has withstood the test of time and adversity. Its striking red hue and dignified presence narrate the optimism and fortitude of the Okinawan people. Shureimon's history intertwines with that of Shurijo Castle, and its name, bestowed by the Ming Dynasty, signifies the Ryukyu Kingdom's adherence to propriety. As a gateway that has welcomed envoys and witnessed royal ceremonies, Shureimon offers a brief yet profound glimpse into the island's storied past.

Tamaudun

arrow-image

Just a short walk from Shureimon, Tamaudun invites us to a serene encounter with the royal history of the Ryukyu Dynasty. This stone mausoleum, also known as the Spiritual Palace, serves as the final resting place for Ryukyu kings and their families. Built by King Shangzhen to honor his father, the tomb complex is a testament to the artistry of Ryukyuan craftsmen, with its coral stone construction and intricate design. The mausoleum's three chambers, each with its own significance, and the gold-inscribed stele in the atrium, offer a poignant connection to the island's regal lineage. As a national important cultural heritage site, Tamaudun stands as a solemn and beautiful reminder of the dynasty's legacy.

Kinjo Stone Road

arrow-image

Concluding our day's historical immersion, we meander along the Kinjo Stone Road, a surviving segment of the ancient Pearl Road. Once a vital thoroughfare linking Shuri Castle to the Kokuba River, this stone-paved path whispers tales of the Ryukyu Kingdom's past. Though the Battle of Okinawa left much of the original road in ruins, the 238-meter stretch in Kinjo Town remains a tangible link to the island's storied heritage. As we tread upon the same stones that once bore the footsteps of royalty, the Kinjo Stone Road offers a meditative journey through time, inviting reflection on the enduring spirit of Naha.

The hotel is really nice and I like it very much. It is very convenient to get in and out in the middle of the mountain, and it is very convenient to drive everywhere. I chose 2 hotels with swimming pools for this holiday, and the swimming pools are also very nice scenery. The Hilton pool is outdoors, surrounded by lawns and coconut trees, the green plants are very beautiful, and the lounge chairs are very comfortable! Super cool. The front desk staff is very friendly, the breakfast is very rich and delicious, and the most important thing is that the price is very good! The other is the South Beach Resort Hotel, which is very remote and more expensive than Hilton. The room also feels smaller than Hilton. The carpet is also very hard, not soft at all. The bed is harder like the floor, and the swimming pool is not allowed to enter the swimming pool. When I arrived at the hotel, I found that the scenery of the swimming pool was too ordinary, far worse than the Hilton, but a little bigger. The important thing is that when you do check-in, it is not prompted that you cannot go to the swimming pool if you have a tattoo, especially for foreigners. I think it should be reminded to the people of my country, because this rule is discriminatory, because many hotels in Japan do not have such a saying. It is true that there are tattoos in the hot springs. I have stayed in many Japanese hotels, including also going to I have visited a swimming pool in Japan. This Southern Beach Hotel is special and the front desk service is also very poor. After complaining to Ctrip, my attitude changed 180 degrees. The experience is super bad! So Hilton is still very good, after all, the brand is here, it will not be too bad. Enjoy advanced services at a lower price. Great value!

The location is very close to Shouli City and can be reached in 1 minute on foot. The hotel is not far from Naha IC AC. It is not too traffic jam to go out on the highway in the morning. There is a family on the first floor of the hotel, from 07:00 to 24:00, it is very convenient to buy breakfast, buy milk, buy instant noodles, buy bubble. The front desk staff explained the accommodation service very carefully. The first time I got the wooden door card, I was very textured. As for whether there is a Chinese service, I don't know, because I didn't meet the Chinese service staff this time. This time I stayed on the high floor and had a good view. The room is a room type with two double beds, but the Japanese double bed is just bigger than the single bed. It is not recommended that families with more than Chinese students book this room type, which is more suitable for families with primary school students or young children. The cleaning staff is very dedicated to sorting out the room.

I have stayed many deluxe hotels in downtown Naha area, but this is by far the best hotel for following reasons; 1. Quality of room Descent space (much larger than typical Japanese standard). Good amenity including bathrobes, FREE minibar (beer, Japanese tea, bottled water etc.). Hotel is new; opened in 2020 and cleanness of room is excellent. Soundproof excellent. Toilet and bathtub is well separated and spacious. 2. Facilities Gym + Outside pool available. Only hotel in Kokusai-Dodri area which has such nice amenities. 3. Location Located in central Naha area (Kokusai Dori) with everything within walking distance ( Don Quixote, Starbucks etc.). No other hotel can beat this location!! I would highly recommend this hotel to travelers looking for comfortable stay in downtown Naha.

The hotel's parking lot is three-dimensional guidance. It is not obvious. It is not a vacant space next to the hotel. It is more troublesome to ask the hotel staff to help. It is quite convenient to check in. The hotel has a first mail QRcode as long as you scan the counter staff. The hotel parking is 1500 yen a day. No limit If you want to enter and exit frequently, it is recommended to park in the hotel. Otherwise, there are some parking lots nearby. The service of the hotel staff is also very good. Because the family is not comfortable, I accidentally vomited in the corridor and notified the hotel staff. They also quickly helped clean and care about this stay. Triple room is very spacious. Two 29-inch suitcases + one 25-inch can be opened. No problem. The bathroom is big enough. The bath is not too narrow. There are also two pillows. One is softer and one is hard. You can choose your favorite lying next to the hotel. There are two super merchants. It takes less than a minute to walk. It’s very convenient to buy things. The soundproofing is not bad. I didn’t hear the sound of other rooms. It’s more residential. The TV can be connected to Netflix and YT. It’s very convenient to see everything. If you come next time, you will stay.

Shurijo Castle symbolizes the history and culture of Okinawa.

Shurijo Castle's history is that of the Ryukyu Kingdom itself.

One of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Located in Naha, Okinawa, Shurijo Castle was once the site of the capital and palace of the Ryukyuan Kingdom. In those days, the king of Ryukyu was known to handle state affairs, receive envoys, or hold important ceremonies here, and it has now been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to historical records, Shurijo Castle was burned down and reconstructed several times, with today's castle a replica of the Chinese Tang dynasty style architecture that remained from the Second World War. The Ryukyu-style castle combines the architectural features of China, Japan and Okinawa. One of the most iconic buildings is the Chinese-style Shureimon Gate, the plaque on which is inscribed with "Nation of Propriety", which was given by the Chinese Emperor when conferring titles to the Ryukyu King.

△ The Shureimon Gate was based on the Chinese roofed “turret” gate style called paifang, with a lower red-tiled roof spanning the full width of the gate surmounted by a higher roof in the center.

△ Kankaimon is the first gate that leads to the inner castle walls of Shurijo, and the name Kankai means “to welcome”.

△ The Seide before it was destroyed by fire
