It was hard to find a hotel in Bologna during our March 2018 vacation, so we stayed here. It was between Florence and our next destination which was Florence. That's the best thing about the hotel. It was dated. The TV was absurdly small. Bathroom wasn't the cleanest it could be. Breakfast was more continental with very few hot or cooked items. Lastly, we paid $150 through Priceline. Then when checking out the Manager (Owner?) charged us 10 more euros for "tax". Every other hotel we stayed in during our vacation in Italy only charged 2euro per person tax. 10 euros is not a huge amount I admit, but we had already overpaid and this was an unpleasant surprise after an unpleasant stay. It had the feeling that we were taken advantage of because we were tourists, but perhaps there is a 10 euro tax in Bologna and nowhere else. I wouldn't stay here again.

I can fully recommend this hotel. It is situated in a quiet street of Pianoro. There are clean and tidy rooms without anything to complain about. What I appreciated most was the warm and hearty atmosphere of the house given by the wife of the chef supporting me with anything I needed within my stay there.

We stayed for 11 nights at Il Cavicchio and what a fabulous hidden gem of a place it is. Frederico and Gustavo are brilliant hosts and they cannot do too much for you to make your holiday special. We stayed in one of the apartments and it was excellently kitted out with a capacious fridge, cooking and dining area and a great bed and lounge area. It had a much needed pool, that was really nicely done and maintained. [Note the air con was one of the quietest we have come across and very efficient]. Being in the lovely countryside made it also and the grounds and gardens were very well kept and there was lots of wildlife from woodpeckers to the frogs. The breakfast was also excellent and we don't usually eat jam but the home made pear jam was to die for. It was good base to visit other places such as Bologna, Ravenna, Dozza, Florence and Lucca. With Bologna don't drive in but take the number 13 or 96 bus from the island just inside Rastigano and buy your tickets from the little coffee shop by the car park [which you can park all day]. The taxi's were quite reasonable as it cost us 30 euro's to get back from the centre of Bologna and bus tickets cost 12 euro's for ten trips. Restaurants there were three good local ones the Al Cuntadein, Carosello and Osteria. If you mention you are from Il Cavichio you get 10% off your bill and in Italy you do not have to tip [we did as the service was great]. For food shopping the Co-op in Pianoro was the best with a great deli and range of goods [ we did laugh as we went a different way to it every time]. There is a market in Pianoro and I think it is on a Saturday [check with Frederico] and some great locally grown fruit and vegetables as well as a great little butcher [the Mortadella was beautiful]. For wine Frederico produces his own and it is delicious and for 7 euro's a bottle it is certainly well worth it [try the frizzante instead of prosecco and you will be pleasantly surprised]. One down side are the mosquitoes! Not in the rooms as they are very well protected with mesh, but outside so take some protection. Walking there are some great walks for the more adventurous and you can walk to the Al Cuntadein in about 25 minutes. Last we will go back as Frederico and Gustavo [and Said] we so hospitable and the location was great. P.S. We travelled from the UK all the way by train and you do need a car.
