La Paz
|7.64km from city centerWe stayed at a number of quality hotels on our trip through Brazil and Bolivia and this property was clearly the best. This hotel definitely deserves the great reviews and ratings it has received on the various hotel websites. Landing in La Paz is not easy. The altitude of 13,000 feet at the airport hits you almost immediately. After taking an airport cab to the hotel (about 40-60 minutes away), we arrived at the hotel located in the Zona Sur neighborhood of the city which is about 2,000 feet lower than the airport and almost 1000 feet lower than the city center. While the hotel is located away from the city center (about 40-60 minute taxi cab ride away depending on the traffic), it is much lower and therefore a bit better for those susceptible to altitude sickness. And the neighborhood is much nicer, cleaner and far more upscale than most of the city. The hotel ensures its guests comfort and safety. They even have oxygen tanks near the elevator for those with altitude sickness. A pharmacy is across the street which sells Sorochi tablets for altitude sickness. And as you enter the lobby of the hotel, there is always a pot of hot water available for making Mate de coca, a drink traditionally used to address altitude sickness. And for those still a bit dizzy and tired, the hotel offers some great massages downstairs near the pool and jacuzzi. The hotel is just 3 short blocks away from the green station of the newly installed Teleferico, an 11 color coded system of cable cars that transport people above the city. The views are absolutely specatular, particularly at night. The system is easy to use. Payment is made per line at any station. It is cheap, safe and clean. We took a scenic ride around the city and it took us about 2-3 hours which included stops to eat and drink at the stations along the way. Although there are not many restaurants nearby, the hotel has a very good restaurant which provides buffet breakfasts for guests. We noticed at night that prominent locals frequent the restaurant for dinner where local dishes including llama (preferred cooked well done) and trucha (local trout with meat like salmon) are served. We liked both. The service is five star. No question about it. The desk clerk, Josue, is an example of the fine personnel that this organization has hired and trained. Professional, caring and above all friendly, they made our stay on our 2 week tour of this corner of South America a real pleasure.

|1.97km from city centerOn the first night I was in a 4 bed dorm and I was woken up at 4 am by the receptionist and a security guard. They got me out of bed and made me show my room key and guest card, as apparently in their system the room should be empty. Well, I was in the right room and I was taken out of bed without any need, apparently the receptionist registered me on room 307 and gave me the keys of 407. It was very unpleasant and I had a terrible sleep after that. I wonder why they couldn't wait until later to settle the matter. So I went to the reception to negotiate some kind of compensation for the unpleasant situation they had put me through, I suggested a complimentary breakfast (it costs about U$4.50). But they basically replied that they didn't care about the situation and that I could complain wherever I wanted. Selina is not a cheap hostel, so you're expected to at least be treated well, which was not the case. Before this happened, I would easily give it five stars, as it is comfortable, safe, clean. But the way they treated me wasn't fair, they treated me like I was doing something wrong, when in fact it was their mistake. Second night the private room smelled cigarette, I also let reception know but nothing was made. There were some dishes from a previous guest at the door and they stayed there until my check out. Both nights were very noisy. During check out I had to request the refund of the 35bs key deposit they charged me when checking in, but they said it wasn't registered on the system (again another ”system” mistake), so I had to insist I paid, very uncomfortable situation once more. It seems Selina La Paz needs to improve its management. The whole situation will definitely make me think twice about staying at another Selina.

|1.06km from city centerThe hotel is in a good location, 100 meters from the Basilica of San Francisco, about 2 streets on Witch Street, and a few hundred meters walk from the Presidential Capitol. The hotel service is very good, the front desk is very welcoming, and tea snacks are served every day. The restaurant is good for breakfast, lunch and dinner and afternoon tea are good. Basically, dining in La Paz has been chosen at the hotel. The hotel is a historical building remodeled.

|1.58km from city centerReally very helpful staff who communicated well in English. The location is great and the rooms are beyond expectations given the modest price charged by the hotel. The breakfast was adequate rather than expansive. This suited me because I went on tours and hardly had time to have a huge breakfast.
Definitely a hotel that serves your needs as a traveler without a hefty price tag. The central location was convenient and allowed your groups to pick up for excursions

|2.86km from city centerThe store's facilities and services meet the needs of four-star hotels. The front desk speaks fluent English! This is really important because everyone in La Paz is not very likely to say... There is something to ask the front desk to help you call taxi to recommend the route you want to play. The hotel also offers spa horse killing and dry cleaning services and room service (although not tasty). The breakfast is generous enough to cater for different needs.

|2.57km from city centerFrom the time we arrived, to the time we left, we all felt very welcome and comfortable at this fine hotel. We came back three times, between our travels to Tupiza and Coroico, and were allowed to leave our leftover luggage in their storage. The rooms are great. We had a two bedroom apartment for 4 people. With a lounge area and a small kitchenette. The bathroom is modern and functional. Nice hot showers any time of the day. Cleaning was spotless. Matresses and pillows were the most comfortable on our entire journey around Bolivia. Breakfast buffet was plentiful. The gym was also great - in the nearby mall. Perhaps the only thing missing, is a roof terrace or a small garden, where you can sit outside and enjoy the sun. The most important thing, were the people in the reception, restaurant and office. They were all very serviceminded and helpful in any way we required. So all in all a 5-star experience and definitely recommendable. We would come back any time.

|1.99km from city centerThis is an excellent hotel, just outside the main centre of La Paz. The rooms are of an excellent quality, with a good sized main room and bathroom. The hotel accommodated my early arrival into La Paz and allowed me to check into my room at 8am for a reasonable price. The breakfast were varied in content but always of a very good standard, with a spectacular view of La Paz from the main restaurant on the 8th floor. The laundry service the hotel offers was also useful after 2 weeks of travelling! The only thing that would have been useful is tea/coffee facilities and maybe a fridge in the room, but such services are provided by main reception. I would definitely stay at this hotel again the next time I am in La Paz.

|2.51km from city centerThe kind and skilled owners and staff have taken excellent care of me for many visits over the years, and it’s time for me to acknowledge that excellence. During the demonstrations the wracked Bolivia a few years ago, when blockades led to food shortages, other hotels suspended restaurant service, but not Casa Fusion – each morning, they still brewed their delicious coffee, setting out crackers instead of (no longer available) bread, cheese instead of butter, and some jam – but guests were kept fed! And during the bouts of Covid panic that swept Bolivia, they opened up while other hotels were still shuttered, and spent hours (literally) working with me, ensuring that I could have a valid test result to board my return flight home. Now tourists are returning to Bolivia, and Casa Fusion continues to provide their excellent service. The little café is as charming as ever, the yummy in-house bakery draws tourists and Paceños, and this reasonably-priced hotel, perfectly situated in the restaurant-filled Sopocachi neighborhood and half a block from the cable car station, serves grateful guests from around the world.

|0.84km from city centerThe good: I loved 1)the location in the witches market, 2)the modern and clean room, 3)excellent shower, 4)helpful and knowledgeable front desk staff, 5)rooftop terrace for breakfast with excellent views, 6)elevator(!) 7)in-room heater The areas for improvement: 1)Room was not consistently cleaned/ re-stocked with toiletries and bathroom tissue (I had to ask for these twice in my 5 night stay). 2)Breakfast offerings are very basic and limited in choice (bread rolls, 1 jam, some margarine, 1 boiled egg but only if requested, 1 watered down juice, bananas, instant coffee, instant oatmeal). To the point that I brought my own food to supplement for variety. All-in I think it is a solid choice and offer great value, but could be amazing if they improve on the few suggestions listed above.

|7.92km from city centerI stayed here during 2-week visit with my girlfriend and our experience was excellent! We had the chance to enjoy lunch and dinner at Kenti Restaurant, where the food is delicious and you'll find variety. Although the food was great, our favorite was breakfast. It is one of the best ones we've had, enjoying several types of bread, grains, fruit, juices and cooked meals. The room was very comfortable and led to a courtyard were you can spend afternoons reading a book or enjoying a cup of coffee. Fully recommend!

|0.83km from city centerIt is not the easiest task to choose a hotel on the other side of the world from your cozy surroundings back home. Of course you check Tripadvisor and a few other sites before finally making your decision. But still, you never know. If you by chance are going to La Paz in Bolivia, trust me on this: Stay at Hotel Sagarnaga. You will not be disappointed. Good prices, really nice staff, clean comfortable rooms and perfectly situated in the city. Most staff speak really good English and they understand service. Breakfast is simple but good enough for you to make it until lunch. Also, should you have any desires to climb a mountain, ride a bike, go on a bustour to Lake Titicaca etc you have several agencies of which Jiwaki would be one I would recommend just 10-50 meters from the hotel. And yes, La Paz is situated at 3700 masl and you might, no, you should be very careful upon arrival and give it at least 48 hrs of rest before you attempt any kind of activity. Hence Hotel Sagarnaga: Within 60 seconds distance you have ATM´s, Money exchange, Good restaurants, small stores to buy your water to have in the hotel room while you rest and try to get oxygen into your lungs. In other words, Hotel Sagarnaga offers you a perfect infrastructure to get comfortable and catch your breath.

|8.19km from city centerComfortable and well appointed hotel in a safe neighbourhood. Room spacious but no view to speak of: the room pictures taken from select angles. Balcony door did not lock and staff seemed unconcerned. Laundry prices extortionate. Only 250ml of water in room, the rest is charged, which felt unfair given the importance of hydration at high altitude. breakfast box a shambles: stale sandwich and no water and, according to check out staff, no possibility of adding water. Not good enough.

|0.76km from city center2-nights solo stay in April 2019. The hotel is located in the touristy part of old town, close to the Witches’ Market (Mercado de las Brujas). That might sound like a good thing, but it isn’t – the area reminded me of Old Delhi… dirty, busy and crowded. I was in a room overlooking the main road, and the windows just couldn’t keep the noise out. Note that despite the chaotic traffic and crowds, the area didn’t feel unsafe, even late at night. Plaza Major de San Francisco, Plaza Murillo and the Teleferico stations for cable cars to El Alto or Zona Sur aren’t very close, but walkable from the hotel (keep in mind that La Paz has steep hills). The hotel is in an old building with LOTS of staircases and open-air areas. Again, it sounds like a good idea until you have to run across an open terrace in pouring rain to get to your room. Also, access to many (most?) rooms requires climbing at least a few stairs. The walls are paper-thin and you can clearly hear conversations and other sounds from adjoining rooms. And that leads to my next gripe / observation – the room safe requires an advance science degree to operate. I read and re-read the instructions in full before being able to use it. Unfortunately, due to the paper-thin walls and the complexity of the room safe, I was woken up at 3am one night by the folks next door repeatedly failing to open their safe by entering wrong number combinations. I heard every beep of them keying in the numbers, the safe mechanism turning, and then beeping to indicate incorrect numbers. The room has an electric room heater, and extra blankets are available in the cupboard. The free WiFi had a good speed. I thought the buffet breakfast finished early for a hotel aimed at tourists. Food availability was an issue both mornings that I ate there, as popular items ran out and weren’t replaced. I was disappointed by the hotel’s service, particularly due to two incidents: • I got drenched in a sudden downpour one evening, and was told the hotel couldn’t provide an iron and ironing board when I asked, in order to dry my clothes. The person I spoke to didn’t offer any other ideas to help with the situation • I asked the receptionist while checking-out to mail postcards for me, and gave him BOB100 for stamps and his assistance. Those are the only postcards from my South America trip that didn’t arrive Free tea and hot water are available in the lobby area. I won’t stay again at the Hotel Rosario – the hotel, the service and the location just didn’t do it for me, especially for the price I paid. I plan to stay in the trendy Sopocachi area next time I’m in La Paz; or the vibrant San Miguel area in Zona Sur.

|2.23km from city centerComfortable, compact, modern room. Very friendly service. Varied buffet breakfast. The location is good, except for the fact that you can't park the cab and you have to get off very quickly. Close to the stadium square so there are food options, stalls selling accessories (I needed a flashlight and found it without problems). There was a sports team staying there and it seemed like there would be a lot of noise, but in reality I was able to sleep very well.

|0.74km from city centerWe had the pleasure of spending three nights at hotel Qantu in La Paz. Hotel staff was nice and we could arrange with them on email to secure pickup from the airport. Arriving at the hotel in the middle of the night we were greeted by a very professional and nice staff member. Room was fairly good size and clean. indeed the whole hotel felt clean and as something the staff cared about. Breakfast was ok and here again friendly staff made good omelets for us suggested by themselves. However the really big difference was Lili in the reception. She was very very helpful and helped organising our whole journey on from La Paz. Even booked busses, sightseeing, taxis and all we needed. No doubt about my next stay in La Paz also will be at Qantu.

|1.41km from city centerWhile its location is centric, the overall look of it is not the greatest! Outdated basic rooms for a night maybe 2. Breakfast menu is very limited and many of the items do not looked fresh at all! Nearby streets looked quite scary, specially at night, there is sense of not being secure... just my impression as if someone is going to jump out of nowhere... I had a 2 night stay before going to Uyuni and at the end of it, when checking out, the front desk staff was asking in an accusatory tone if I had eaten something from the minibar, which I hadn’t, but they insisted as if I was not telling the truth, the the front desk person went about the amount of towels and the it was “very strange” they left only one when it should have been 3! Once again this was done in a accusatory tone that made me think on offering to open my bags so they could check in wasn’t stealing them! Although I had a reservation for an additional 2 nights, upon returning from Uyuni, I decided to cancel, even losing money from doing it and find a “better” accommodation! I just didn’t feel comfortable being accused like that and no one to rely on for support! Bad experience overall!
