My partner and I arrived late after travelling, and at check-in, saw no immediate/apparent issues with the hotel. However, in the early hours of the morning, we were woken up by a strong smell coming from the bathroom. We were concerned a pipe had burst, as it smelled like sewage. Upon checking the bathroom the water in the toilet was dark yellow, like something had backed up in the pipes. We opened the windows to try and air the smell out, but it didn’t dissipate. In the morning, we also found that one of the plug sockets was broken and it looked very dangerous to use. We also found a stain on the curtains that looked like dried blood. The bedding had a hole in it that looked like a cigarette burn. When we went down for breakfast, the crockery and cutlery were dirty (the mugs had coffee/tea stains, and the knives and forks were sticky.) Overall, the hotel was incredibly unsanitary. The issue with the bathroom was of particular concern, and we were worried about the health implications of staying there any longer. We decided to seek out alternative accommodation nearby and check out of The Royal Plaza earlier than planned. Upon checking out, we tried to raise these issues with the member of staff at the reception desk, and received little acknowledgement. We asked if there was a way to log a complaint about our room, and were told “you can try, but it’s non-refundable.” There was no concern expressed, and no apology offered.
