The newly renovated VIP Building of Hengshan Hotel (formerly Picardie Building) really respects its history. It's in a superb location on Hengshan Road and largely maintains its original appearance. You can tell they paid attention to the details – for example, next to the highly intelligent digital display for the room's AC thermostat, there's also a manual up-and-down light switch, which feels very tactile. The room even has a non-functional fireplace. The hardware is basically flawless. The only minor drawback is that the operations are a bit rougher compared to the meticulously detailed hard furnishings. I complained about the placement of the bathroom floor mat, which was stored under the sink – clearly not right and disrupts the flow. However, the manager handled it very appropriately. Plus, the package I bought included a happy hour and afternoon tea, and the food quality during happy hour was excellent; they didn't cut corners or tarnish their reputation. The VIP lounge also offers great views. So, all in all, I still give it a five-star rating.

The day before check-in, I received a call from Ms. Ma at the front desk, inquiring about any special requests for our stay and sending me the hotel's dining menu. She even personally came out to warmly greet us upon arrival for check-in. Ms. Ma, a brilliant Shanghai native who excels in both substance and style, truly deserves commendation. All our meals—breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner at the Italian restaurant—were served by a wonderful lady named Ms. Lu, whose attentive and meticulous service left a deep impression. Overall, the proactive and enthusiastic service attitude and standard of the hotel staff we encountered were on par with high-end Japanese hotels, and distinctly superior to the service levels at the other two Aman properties in China. I saw the Black Diamond Wow Privilege and it was my child's birthday, so I thought I'd try the Rosewood Hong Kong, which I've long heard is the best. We stayed for two nights. First, I'd say the check-in experience was quite good. I booked two rooms, one with a Kowloon view and one with a sea view, and requested they be on the same floor in advance. Trip.com customer service followed up, and indeed, we got rooms on the same floor. However, we didn't receive the room upgrade mentioned in the Wow Privilege. We checked in at 4 PM, and the rooms were ready with a handwritten welcome letter and a fruit platter (three oranges) in each. I didn't mention my child's birthday during check-in, so we didn't get a birthday cake on their actual birthday. I feel the attention to detail in service was a bit lacking – a deduction for attentiveness. The hotel front desk also didn't mention the Wow Privilege or the option for a 2-hour late check-out. The staff's service attitude was excellent; they switched seamlessly between English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. Breakfast was semi-buffet style, with some items for self-service and others to order from a menu. Although the variety wasn't extensive, the food was well-prepared and delicious. My only slight disappointment was that the wonton noodles on the first day were amazing, but when I ordered them again on the second day, they were significantly less impressive, with a bland and tasteless broth. The hot waffles were delicious both days 😋. The turndown service every night was excellent, and the room cleaning was very thorough. During our stay, we also tried the spa, pool, and gym, all of which I highly recommend.

I found the sink and toilet design to be quite impractical. I understand that the hotel is an older building, which might limit certain design choices. However, I believe the sink could at least be located outside the bathroom. This would prevent awkward situations, especially when one person needs to use the toilet while another needs to brush their teeth or wash their hands simultaneously – it's incredibly inconvenient. It's also unhygienic, as aerosols from flushing the toilet can linger in the air and settle on toothbrushes and cups. Furthermore, the bathroom door doesn't close properly, and at night, if someone uses the toilet, the bed faces directly towards it, making for a very unsettling sleep. It's also inconvenient for things like pouring tea. Sitting on the sofa constantly made me feel like I was watching TV, drinking, or eating right at the bathroom door. The service and amenities, however, were excellent and very responsive. It's really just an issue with the hardware, or perhaps I should have just chosen a different room type.

It's okay. Some rooms are a lot older than others. Service needs some work. We stayed at the JW Marriott in Las Vegas over Thanksgiving in November. I booked a studio suite and I requested an upgrade through Marriott using my suite upgrade allocation. It should have put me in a one bedroom. The day before I arrived, I received an email telling me I could upgrade to a one bedroom for $60 per night. I replied back that I had requested the upgrade using my suite nights allocation. They should be able to confirm it at no cost. I did not receive a reply. When I arrived at the hotel, they tried to tell me that I needed to pay them $60 per night for my existing room. They then determined this was incorrect. When they gave me the room key, they told me that they had used my suite upgrade. I went to the room only to find that it was the studio suite that I had originally booked. I went back to the desk where they figured out that I should be in a one bedroom. They checked me in again and sent me to a different tower. It was a one bedroom. The suite was large but definitely worn and dated. It was clean but the room had no personality. The food at the hotel is just not great. We ate at their coffee shop twice. The iced tea was horrible. It was from a tap. The food was sub par. If you stay at this hotel, use delivery or go out to eat.

But if we set aside these external definitions and focus purely on the stay experience, the deepest impression it left on me can be summed up in two words: sheer comfort. This comfort doesn't stem from any single specific amenity, but rather from an overall feeling. Tucked away deep within Beijing's Qianmen hutongs, stepping through the gate from the bustling streets into the courtyard felt like entering a different dimension of time. Grey bricks, dark tiles, courtyard walls, and tree shadows – all elements were distinctly Beijing, yet without any forced emphasis on being 'Beijing.' The design didn't just stop at symbolism; instead, it re-organized the hutong courtyard lifestyle, truly allowing guests to live in a modern Beijing courtyard home. Beijing in the summer is particularly suited to this place. The afternoon sun dappled through the leaves onto the courtyard, with doves perched quietly on the branches. Sitting in the courtyard, watching the clouds drift slowly between the eaves and grey walls, you suddenly understand why old Beijingers always said, 'There must be a tree in the courtyard.' The tree not only provides shade but also marks the passage of time. The wind changes, the light changes, and the tree shadows change. Many high-end hotels can achieve professionalism, but it's not easy to make guests feel genuine care, and this place truly has that ability. Near check-out, I had a chat with the duty manager, Chloe. What began as a simple conversation unexpectedly became a memorable part of this stay. She meticulously detailed the design philosophy and spatial characteristics of the hotel's 42 rooms, patiently explaining everything from the layouts of different courtyards to the subtle differences between rooms. One could feel her genuine understanding and passion for this hotel, which in turn gave me a more complete appreciation for this hidden hutong gem. My special thanks also go to Chloe for her insights and hospitality. Upon leaving, I felt that the most precious aspect of this hotel wasn't its luxury, but rather how it has preserved the ambiance of courtyard living in a rapidly changing city like Beijing. Shade from trees, grey walls, summer clouds, birdsong. These seemingly ordinary things collectively form a part of my memory of summer in Beijing. If staying at a hotel is about experiencing a space, then the Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing is more about experiencing a Beijing way of life. A butler was waiting for us while we parked, showing exceptional service. Upon checking in at the lobby, we were offered complimentary snacks and drinks. To my delight, they upgraded our room for free, allowing for a better view of Yanqi Lake. The room table had fruit and wine, and the butler had even prepared aromatherapy. Surprisingly, the bathroom floor was also thoughtfully equipped with a non-slip mat. The butler also brought our luggage to our room, and to my surprise, given the slightly chilly temperature, they even brought down a warm coat from the car – incredibly considerate! We had initially mentioned needing to get our luggage, but only remembered when they went to retrieve it, and then they thoughtfully brought us the warm coat! We also participated in an afternoon cultural tour, which provided a deeper understanding of the hotel's design style and philosophy. The food was excellent, and the hotel facilities, cleanliness, and environment were superb! Not to mention the butler's service – it was exceptional! I highly recommend this hotel to families visiting Yanqi Lake. If we go again in the future, we will definitely choose Yanbai Mountain Villa again!

When I arrived at the airport, I found that I forgot my passport at the hotel. They helped me find it very efficiently and I didn't miss the flight. They also specifically said that I didn't need to tip, which is what they should do. Disadvantages: The balcony is so small that I can't stretch my legs when sitting on the chair.
