What Is the Keikyu Line? Route, Stations and Where It Goes

Keikyu Corporation (officially Keihin Electric Express Railway) is a private railway company separate from JR East and the Tokyo Metro. The line runs from central Tokyo to Yokohama, the Miura Peninsula and Haneda Airport, and all stations are numbered from KK01 (Shinagawa) to KK72 (Misakiguchi), making it easy to follow on station signs.

The Five Lines

Keikyu's network is built around one main line with four branches.

Keikyu Airport Line: Haneda Airport to Tokyo, Shinagawa and Yokohama

Keikyu Airport Line

For most visitors, the Airport Line is the primary reason to take Keikyu in the first place. This spur runs off the Main Line at Keikyu Kamata, and most trains go on past there, either heading north to Shinagawa or south to Yokohama. Some even continue on to the Toei Asakusa Line.

Haneda's Two Stations

Haneda has two Keikyu stations, KK16 and KK17. These stations serve two groups of terminals. Terminal 3 is located at KK16 and provides services for international flights.

As for KK17, Terminals 1·2 are provided for domestic flights. Terminal 3 was opened in 2010 as the International Terminal and renamed to its current name in 2020.

The trains coming from the Tokyo direction arrive at Terminal 3 first, and then Terminals 1 and 2. Please be sure to confirm which terminal your airline company is located in before you get off.

Through Services Beyond Shinagawa

Past Sengakuji, numerous trains branch off on the Toei Asakusa Line and head on over Keisei tracks to Narita Airport. Just keep an eye on the destination boards, because a train bound for a nearby station might actually go where you don't want it to.

Slightly cheaper to buy from trip than over the counter. Once you bought it, just head down to the platform and when the train arrives, look for NON RESERVED which will be displayed near the train entrance. Took us awhile to confirm this 🫠

Keikyu Line Train Types Explained: Rapid Limited Express vs Limited Express vs Local

Keikyu Line Train Types

Keikyu operates five different types of service on the same tracks. The difference in the stopping patterns, rather than the names of the services, is what determines the train you should take. None of the services require a supplement, and the regular cars are unreserved.

Note: Airport Express has been renamed to simply Express. Any guides using the old names are out-of-date.

Reserved Seats on Wing Services

Wing, which is a reserved-seat commuter service, is the single exception to the “no supplement” rule. There is a night-time Wing that operates on weekdays from Shinagawa to Misakiguchi and a morning one that operates in the opposite direction, from Miurakaigan to Sengakuji. According to a travel report from Japan, the standard fare for each passenger is ¥300 for a reservation in advance, which should be confirmed by calling.

Which Train to Board

In terms of the time difference between trains between Haneda and Shinagawa there are only a few minutes difference, so just get on the train that arrives first. Any express train or kaitoku train will work fine for your ride to Yokohama.

Keikyu Line Timetable and Frequency: First and Last Trains

Keikyu Line Timetable and Frequency

From early in the morning until about midnight, Keikyu has a stellar service to help passengers catch their overnight flights. The times given below are assumed to be the official schedules from Haneda Terminal 3 to Shinagawa route, which might change along the way, hence this should be cross-checked with the relevant service provider on the date of travelling.

How Often Trains Run

Services are frequent throughout the day. However, the Airport Kaitoku runs less frequently compared to the Express and the Kaitoku trains, so it is recommended to check the platform board rather than wait for the fastest service. When you miss the last train, the Keikyu Limousine Bus and taxis are available as an alternative.

Keikyu Line Fares and IC Cards: What You'll Pay

Keikyu Line Fares and IC Cards

Fares are based on distance travelled, and there are no additional charges for faster trains. Tickets can be paid for by IC card, contactless bank card or paper ticket.

The fares below are standard prices and were correct at the time this article/guide was written.

How to Pay

There are three ways to pay, and the Japan Rail Pass is not one of them.

  • IC cards: Suica, PASMO and other IC cards work at every Keikyu station. Fares are calculated in single yen when you tap in and out with the same card.
  • Contactless bank cards: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover and UnionPay cards work through Keikyu’s Tap to Ride service, which is handy if you have not bought an IC card. Tap to Ride has limits:
  • It does not work at the transfer gates at Shinagawa, Tenkubashi, Hatchonawate and Yokohama.
  • Children aged 6 to 11 are charged adult fares.
  • The Toei transfer discount does not apply.
  • Paper tickets: These are sold at machines for cash or credit card, with fares rounded to the nearest ¥10.
  • Japan Rail Pass: Not valid on Keikyu, because it is a private railway outside the JR network.

Keikyu Line Day Passes and Discount Tickets Worth Buying

Keikyu Line Day Passes

Keikyu sells several discount tickets, most of which combine travel with meals or other attractions. The company's own website makes no mention of an all-lines unlimited day pass, so beware of guides that claim to have one.

Ticket

What you get

Price

Verdict

Hanetoku Ticket and Tokyo Subway Ticket

Haneda–Sengakuji return (valid nine days) plus a Tokyo Metro and Toei pass

¥1,600 (24 hours), ¥2,100 (48 hours), ¥2,600 (72 hours)

Good for sightseers; the Keikyu return adds only ¥600 to the ¥1,000 subway ticket

Misaki Maguro Day Trip Ticket

Return rail, Keikyu Bus pass, tuna meal voucher, leisure or souvenir voucher

From Shinagawa: ¥3,850 to ¥5,000 digital, ¥5,000 physical

Worth it for a Miura day trip if you will eat tuna

Other Tickets

The Hayama Excursion Ticket includes train and bus passes plus meal and leisure vouchers and is available to anyone despite the "girls' trip" euphemism in some listings. The Tokyo 1-Day and Yokohama 1-Day tickets both include a Keikyu return ticket plus unlimited local transport, making them worthwhile only if you plan to use public transport extensively. The current price is listed on the Keikyu website for each ticket type.

Buying Tips

The Hanetoku set must be purchased online before departure, for example from ANA, and picked up at a Haneda station. Older guides quote lower Maguro prices than does Keikyu's page, so check the official numbers.

Keikyu Line to Yokohama: Which Train to Take and Where to Get Off

Keikyu Line to Kamakura, Zushi and the Miura Peninsula

Keikyu Line to Kamakura, Zushi and the Miura Peninsula

South of Yokohama, Keikyu opens up a quieter coastline of fishing ports, beaches and cherry blossom. Kamakura, however, needs a different railway.

Reaching Kamakura

Keikyu does not serve Kamakura. The usual route is to ride Keikyu to Yokohama and then take the JR Yokosuka Line. Zushi·Hayama is a separate station from JR Zushi, so allow time for a short onward journey if you are heading that way.

Keikyu Line Tips: Transfers, Luggage and Rush Hour

Keikyu Line Tips

A few small habits will make your first Keikyu journey smoother, especially if you arrive with luggage.

Transfers at Shinagawa

At Shinagawa, Keikyu and JR have separate gate entrances. The Touch and Ride system does not operate at the transfer gate, so make sure to use an IC card or paper ticket at this point. When purchasing a paper ticket for travel beyond Shinagawa, Keikyu ticket machines have a button for transferring to JR lines and another for the Toei lines, so make sure to select the relevant button according to your destination.

Check Before You Board

Keikyu trains run on other railways, so be sure to check the destination as well as the type of train. Before boarding, be sure to look at the departure board to confirm the destination and platform. Moreover, be sure to confirm that the train you are taking stops at your destination. If you are going to Yokohama or Miura Peninsula, make sure it stops there instead of Shinagawa.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures

If you are arriving late, check the last train times in the timetable section above. On weekends and holidays, the last train from Shinagawa to Haneda involves a transfer at Keikyu Kamata. Keikyu has a dedicated page for late-night and early-morning passengers, and the Limousine Bus and taxis fill in the gaps.

Luggage and Crowds

Carriages have little luggage space, so stand at doors with large cases. As with any Tokyo metro line, weekday morning and evening rush hours are the busiest times, so try to avoid these periods large carriers if possible.
