Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a real-life fairyland. Tucked in Hunan Province, China, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its tall, thin sandstone pillars that shoot up from the ground, draped in greenery. You might recognize these pillars from the movie Avatar—they inspired the “Hallelujah Mountains”! But there’s more to it than just movie magic: the park spans over 4,800 hectares, has peaks reaching 1,300 meters, and is home to unique plants and animals.

Amazing views, 100% worth the money spent. Scenery was breathtaking. Not recommended for anyone that is super afraid of heights as there are many areas where you can see hundreds of metres down the cliff.

Impressive natural park. Not suitable for people with vertigo. The ticket system isn't very clear. There's a lack of information to help you choose the option that best suits your needs.

We were so lucky to come in low season and didn't see too many people. Actually it seemed like we were alone almost all the time

It's better to buy a ticket that includes all the cable cars and the lift, otherwise you'll spend even more, like I did :))) It's beautiful in principle, one day was enough for me, the park is really huge.

Zhangjiajie is China’s first national forest park (founded in 1982) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Its star feature—3,000+ sandstone pillars—formed over 380 million years: once an ocean, tectonic shifts lifted the seabed, and wind/rain carved it into the spires you see today. The park sits in Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie City (Hunan Province), part of a bigger scenic area that includes Tianzi Mountain and Suoxi Valley.

What to Prepare for a Trip to China?

  • Visa & Entry Tips China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy now covers 54 countries, incl. the US, UK, Canada, and Brazil, allowing up to 10 days during layovers. Learn more about China Entry Tips to land in China easily.
  • Getting Connected VPNs are vital for accessing Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc in China. Set one up before arriving. China eSIMs are the easiest option for data and bypassing restrictions. Pocket Wi-Fi devices work best for group but are pricier and require pickup/return.
  • Money Exchange & Tax Refunds Exchange money in China banks (better rates than airports). ATMs accept foreign cards, but notify your bank first. For tax refunds, spend over ¥500 at stores with a "Tax-Free" sign. Keep receipts and get forms stamped at customs before departure.

Must-Have Apps in China

  • China Payment Apps Forget cash. Chinese use Alipay (I like it better) or WeChat Pay to pay for everything in China. Scan a QR code at noodle stalls, metros, even temples. Link your foreign Visa/Mastercard before landing.
  • China Map Apps Amap (Gaode Map) & Baidu Map (limited English) is what locals use, with real-time navigation, metro/bus routes, and traffic updates. Apple Maps does a good job too if you're already an IOS user.
  • China Transport Apps Street taxis are cheap, but drivers rarely speak English. Use China Taxi App like DiDi (China’s Uber)—set your destination in English, pay by Alipay.
  • China Travel Apps 15+ China trips taught me: Use Trip.com. It's the best English app for booking China trains/flights/hotels + finds Trip.com deals.
  • China Dating Apps Locals use Tantan (China’s Tinder) and Momo. WeChat’s “People Nearby” works too, but expect language barriers unless your Mandarin’s decent.
  • China Food App Use Meituan (also helps find nearby restaurants) or Ele.me for food delivery—both have English mode. No English menu in restaurants? Scan the QR with Alipay's translator.

FAQs about Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

  • Is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park worth visiting?

Absolutely! It’s one of China’s most unique natural landscapes—think towering sandstone pillars, lush forests, and views you can’t find anywhere else. If you love nature or Avatar, it’s a must-see.
  • How long does it take to climb Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?

You don’t “climb” the whole park—most spots are accessible via trails, cable cars, or elevators. A single trail (like Golden Whip Stream) takes 2–3 hours to walk. Plan 2–3 days to see all major attractions.
  • Is 2 days in Zhangjiajie enough?

Yes, for the main spots! You can cover Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, and the Glass Bridge in 2 days. If you want to hike more or visit nearby Fenghuang Town, add a third day.
  • Where did they film Avatar in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?

The “Hallelujah Mountains” in Avatar were inspired by the “Southern Sky Column” in Zhangjiajie’s Yuanjiajie Scenic Area. The park even renamed the pillar “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” after the movie.
  • How was Zhangjiajie National Forest Park formed?

Over 380 million years ago, this area was an ocean. Tectonic movements lifted the seabed, and then wind, rain, and water erosion slowly carved the sandstone into the tall, thin pillars you see today.
  • Is Zhangjiajie too crowded?

It gets busy in summer (July–August) and during Chinese holidays (like National Day, Oct 1–7). Visit in spring (Mar–May) or autumn (Sep–Nov) to avoid big crowds.
  • How do I go from Chengdu to Zhangjiajie?

The easiest way is to fly: Chengdu Tianfu Airport to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (1.5 hours, ¥500–¥800). You can also take a high-speed train (8–9 hours, ¥300–¥400) to Zhangjiajie West Station.
  • What should I pack for Zhangjiajie?

Comfortable hiking shoes, a light jacket (even in summer—mornings are cool), a raincoat (frequent showers), sunscreen, and a camera. If visiting in winter, bring warm layers for the cold.
