A breathtaking view. I highly recommend it. We bought a ticket for our 4.5-year-old daughter on Trip. We ended up letting our child in for free because the code wasn't scanned. We returned the ticket and Trip gave us a refund.

I visited this place on my last night in Shanghai, the view from outside (at the bottom) was impressive already, be ready to hand over your lighter when entering (you can get it back afterwards by re-entering). For a reasonable price you get essentially launched up an elevator (your ears will feel it). From the observation area you have an incredible view of the city with huge buildings looking tiny so far below, take plenty of pictures. You can grab an expensive coffee if you like, I enjoyed a rather boojie drink called the chocolate bomb myself. Take your time and enjoy the city from all the different angles. I went at night (830-930) which I would highly recommend (although sunset might be better) all the lights really pop at night. Strongly recommended.

The Shanghai Tower stacks up to 128 floors above ground and 5 below, housing everything from dizzying viewpoints to cafes.

What to See Inside Shanghai Tower

Observation Deck (F118 - 546m)

This observation deck holds three world records - highest (546m), fastest elevator (55-second ride from basement to 546m), and tallest glass windows. On clear days, you'll see the Bund's colonial buildings 5km away and watch ships on the Huangpu River. At night, street lights twinkle like ground stars.

Sky Summit (F125/126 - 583.4m)

The soon-to-open pinnacle has the "Eye of Shanghai" - an art-tech installation hosting light shows synchronized to classical music. This level also reveals the tower's 1,000-ton steel damper (weighing 200 elephants) that stabilizes the building during typhoons.

Sky Lobbies (F22/37/52/68)

Nine sky gardens dot the tower, with four major floors:

  • 22nd floor: Coffee shops, a gym, and dentist (yes, really!)
  • 37th floor: Mini-museum with Ming Dynasty vases
  • 52nd floor: Cloud Library bookstore with coffee bar overlooking Pudong
  • 68th floor: Michelin-starred Li Xuan restaurant serving elevated Cantonese cuisine

Ground & Underground

The mall (B2-4F): B2's souvenir shops sell miniature tower models beside bubble tea stalls, while 2F's Starbucks Reserve offers sky-high brews.

Don't miss B1's "Skyscraper Gallery" comparing global giants - Burj Khalifa (828m) models stand beside Shanghai's own 632m structure.

A 340m underground artery links the tower to Jinmao's food court and Metro Line 2, its walls displaying rotating art exhibitions. Future tunnels will connect all three Lujiazui towers beneath the financial district.

The Shanghai Tower is structured like a vertical city. Below ground, B1-B2 are busy with metro links (Lines 2 & 14) and tunnels to the Jinmao Tower. Plus a future passage to the Shanghai World Financial Center. These levels have souvenir shops and a skyscraper exhibit comparing global giants. Deeper down, B3-B5 manage 1,800 parking spots and building systems.

  • At street level, Zone 1 (F1-F5) mixes business and leisure. 5th-floor ballrooms host galas under crystal chandeliers, while lower floors have banks, a Tesla showroom, and cafes like Starbucks.
  • Rising up, Zones 2-6 (F8-81) cater to corporate needs. Law firms and tech headquarters in soundproof offices with triple-glazed windows. Workers can grab lunch at 22nd-floor eateries or visit the dentist without leaving the building.
  • Zones 7-8 (F84-115) shift focus: Floors 84-105 house the J Hotel Shanghai (China’s highest 5-star hotel). Above that, private offices occupy floors 106-115 with biometric security.
  • Zone 9 (F118-121) includes the 546m observation deck (118th floor), event space (119th floor), and the upcoming 583m “Sky Summit” (125-126th floors). Engineers will demonstrate how the 1,000-ton pendulum stabilizes the tower during typhoons.

FAQs about Shanghai Tower

  • What makes the Shanghai Tower earthquake proof?

The Shanghai Tower’s earthquake resistance stems from a combination of innovative engineering and structural design. At its core is a massive 1,000-ton steel damper (often called a “tuned mass damper”) located in the Sky Summit (F125/126). This weighted device acts like a pendulum, counteracting the building’s sway during earthquakes or strong winds by moving in the opposite direction of the tower’s motion, reducing vibrations significantly. Additionally, the tower’s flexible, twisted structure—designed to minimize wind resistance—also enhances its ability to absorb seismic energy. High-strength steel and reinforced concrete in its core and outer frame further reinforce stability, allowing it to withstand major earthquakes while protecting occupants.
  • Is it worth going up the Shanghai Tower?

Yes, ascending the Shanghai Tower is well worth it for anyone seeking unique perspectives of Shanghai and a taste of cutting-edge engineering. The 546-meter observation deck (F118) offers unparalleled views—on clear days, you can see the Bund’s historic skyline 5 kilometers away, watch ships on the Huangpu River, or marvel at the city’s twinkling lights at night. The ride itself is memorable: the world’s fastest elevator reaches the deck in just 55 seconds. Beyond the views, the tower’s sky lobbies (like the 52nd-floor Cloud Library or 68th-floor Michelin-starred restaurant) add layers of experience, blending culture, dining, and architecture. Even the upcoming Sky Summit (F125/126) with its art-tech installations and the massive steel damper offers insight into the tower’s engineering genius, making it more than just a viewpoint—it’s a showcase of modern innovation.
  • What is the top 10 tallest tower in the world?

As of 2025, the world’s 10 tallest habitable towers (by height) are: Burj Khalifa (Dubai, UAE) – 828 meters Merdeka 118 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) – 678.9 meters Shanghai Tower (Shanghai, China) – 632 meters Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) – 601 meters Ping An Finance Center (Shenzhen, China) – 599 meters Lotte World Tower (Seoul, South Korea) – 555 meters One World Trade Center (New York, USA) – 541.3 meters Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre (Guangzhou, China) – 530 meters Tianjin CTF Finance Centre (Tianjin, China) – 530 meters China Zun (CITIC Tower) (Beijing, China) – 528 meters
