Shanghai Wild Animal Park

Just went to Shanghai Wild Animal Park mid Mar. and truly loved it! It’s huge (153 hectares)—you can bike around for 4h+ hours. Saw pandas, sun bears (the ones with the white chests), penguins, raccoons, and white tigers up close from the open-air mesh bus (kinda scary but fun!). Rented a goofy two-seater bike with my bf, caught the animal show, and took a chill boat ride past tons of rare birds.

Recommended sightseeing time: 0.5-1 day Address: No.178, Nanliu Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai

Take a small card on the right hand at the door, scan the QR code to download the Shanghai Safari Park app, there is a map of the park, where to find leopard, lion, tiger, bear and wolf, etc.

How to Get to Shanghai Wild Animal Park

How to Get to Shanghai Wild Animal Park

Here’s the easiest (and cheapest) way to reach the park, based on what I’ve tried and what works best:

1. Taxi/Rideshare (Best for 2+ People)

I went with my boyfriend and two friends on a Sunday. We took a Didi from Jing’an to the park—cost us ¥120 one-way (split 4 ways = ¥30/person). On the way back, it was ¥100 because traffic was lighter.

  • Why It’s Great: Door-to-door, no stress, and you can chill in the car. Perfect for groups.
  • Pro Tip: Book your return taxi 30 mins before you leave the park (around 4 PM) to avoid surge pricing.

⚠️ Skip Hitch Rides (e.g., Hello顺风车):
Sure, it’s cheaper (¥50–60), but you’ll need to speak Chinese to coordinate with the driver, wait for carpool matches, and deal with delays. Honestly, not worth the hassle unless you’re on a tight budget.

How to Get to Shanghai Wild Animal Park

2. Metro + Bus (Good for 1-2 People)

Took Metro Line 16 to Wild Animal Park Station (Exit 1 or 2). From there, it’s a 2-min walk to the bus stop, where you can catch the free shuttle bus (every 15 mins) to the park entrance.

  • Cost: ¥8–12 for the metro + free shuttle. Total time: ~1.5 hours. Often 2 times than taxi.
  • Why It’s Great: Cheap and avoids traffic.
  • Cons: Multiple transfers, and the metro can get crowded during rush hours.

3. Drive Yourself

If driving, head south on S2 Hulu Expressway and exit at Nanliu Highway. The park has a big parking lot at the entrance (¥30/day). If you’re driving, arrive before 10 AM on weekends—spots fill up fast!

  • Why It’s Great: You’re in control of your schedule.
  • Cons: Parking can be a pain, and traffic on weekends can be unpredictable.

Shanghai Wild Animal Park - Show, Feeding & Interaction Times

Shanghai Wild Animal Park - Show, Feeding & Interaction Times

Paid Interactions (¥30/session)

Here’s the best stuff you can pay to do:

  • Flamingos: 9:30–10:30 AM & 1:30–3:30 PM at the Flamingo Exhibit. Perfect for photos.
  • Giraffes: 11:00 AM–2:00 PM at the Giraffe Garden. Feed them leaves up close.
  • Zebras: 10:30 AM–3:30 PM at the Zebra Enclosure. Friendly and interactive.
  • Red Pandas: 12:00–3:00 PM in the Walking Area. Adorable and playful.
  • Hippos: 12:00–3:00 PM at the Hippo House. Watch them yawn and swim.

Pro Tip: Ask about the ¥100 “All-Day Pass” at the entrance if you plan to feed 3+ animals—But I'm not sure if it's still available.

Free Interactions (No Extra Cost)

The free interactions are low-key awesome:

  • Black Bears: 11:00 AM–3:00 PM at the Flying Bear Area. Watch them splash and play.
  • Tiger Feeding Show: 11:30 AM–12:00 PM & 3:00–3:45 PM at the Tiger Exhibit. Tigers leap for food—thrilling to watch.
  • Crocodile Feeding: 11:15 AM & 1:15 PM at Crocodile Beach. A short but intense 5–10 minute show.
  • Raccoons: 1:00–3:00 PM at the Raccoon Exhibit. Entertaining as they compete for food.

Disclaimer: Times are subject to change due to weather or animal behavior. Check the park app or entrance boards for updates.

Shanghai Wild Animal Park vs Shanghai Zoo

Shanghai Wild Animal Park vs Shanghai Zoo

Shanghai Wild Animal Park is a full-day adventure with interactive experiences. You can feed giraffes, ride a VIP safari bus to see lions and tigers up close, and catch daily shows like the Sea Lion Theater and Beast Mountain. The park’s layout is massive (153 hectares), so you’ll need 6–8 hours to explore everything. It’s pricier (¥165/adult + ¥100 for VIP feeding), but the immersive, semi-wild habitats make it worth it for older kids and adults.

Shanghai Zoo, on the other hand, is budget-friendly and convenient. Located in Changning, it’s just a metro ride away. Tickets are only ¥40/adult (kids under 1.3m free), and while it lacks the thrill of feeding tigers, it’s perfect for families with toddlers. The zoo is smaller, shaded, and less crowded, making it ideal for a relaxed half-day visit.

Things to Do at Shanghai Wild Animal Park

Things to Do at Shanghai Wild Animal Park

Shanghai Wild Animal Park is a MUST if you love animals! Just visited with my bf last weekend (a rainy day on March), and here’s what I love to do:

1. Rent the Goofy Tandem Bike
Starts at 40 RMB for 2 hours (200 RMB deposit) right at the entrance. We zipped around the park FAST—saw flamingos at the gate (!), alpacas (white, brown, black floofs), raccoons climbing vines overhead, and monkeys doing monkey drama. Pandas were chilling, penguins waddled. Best part? You can stop anywhere to gawk.

2. Feed the Animals
Paid 30 RMB each to feed zebras, giraffes, and Asian elephants (cute AF photos). FREE interactions too: birds, raccoons, etc. At the entrance, ask about the 100 RMB “interaction pass” for unlimited feeds (idk if it still exists—staff will help). Pro tip: Check FEEDING TIMES. Miss them and you’ll just watch animals side-eye your empty hands.

3. Mesh Bus Safari
Skip the regular bus—pay extra (forgot exact price, maybe +50 RMB?) for the open-top mesh one. Got STUPID close to white tigers, sun bears (those white-chested Disney-looking ones?!), lions, leopards. Bus leaves every 30 mins, but last ride is ~3:30-4 PM. We went during drizzle—muddy AF (smelled like… farm life) with herds of zebras/camels blocking the road. Carnivore zones were cleaner, tho.

4. Free Animal Circus Show
30-minute show with seals, parrots, monkeys. Surprisingly wholesome—animals looked healthy and into it. No sad vibes, just pure “how tf did that monkey ride a bike?!”.

5. Boat Ride for Bird Nerds
Saved this for last. The lake is HUGE and packed with rare birds—flamingo colonies, cranes, ducks living their best lives. Super chill way to end the day.

This is the best zoo I've ever been to. I really enjoyed it. There was a seal show and a variety of wild animals. I especially loved the tour to the safari park, where you ride in a cage on a bus to see tigers, lions, bears, wolves, and other animals. I definitely recommend it! And for only 30 yuan, you can feed the animals yourself. The red pandas are absolutely adorable.
