Tianmen Mountain is a stunning place. We took Route B. A quick cable car ride up, a short walk, and there you are, the "Heaven's Gate" and its 999 steps. You can walk up the stairs, or pay 30-odd yuan and take the escalator. We're not shy, so we set off. 11 minutes and 30 seconds later, we reached the summit. We barely made it; our legs refused to lift us, but we finally reached the top of the stairs. Unfortunately, we arrived late. So we only had time to climb the steps, then take the escalators, and stroll a bit to the summit... and then back. But the climb alone was a huge experience.

It's simply fantastic there. We had a ticket for 7-8 am and were able to go up at 6:40 am. Because of this, we were at the top before many others and had many spots to ourselves. We started with the west route, which is a good idea, as many people start with the east route and didn't meet us until about two hours later. The only annoying thing is that the upper cable car is currently being renovated, and everyone has to take the elevators through the mountain.

Went there with my friends , took us maybe 6 hours on spot to visit everything. If you are looking for a 100% nature hike it isn’t the right spot has there is literally escalators inside the mountain , but it is still worth it in my opinion.

It's definitely an experience worth having! You can easily do it in one day, arriving in the morning around 9 or 10 am until closing time. We purchased route A and discovered that it took us all the way to the top, meaning we couldn't climb the famous 999 steps (but only down them). Luckily, however, due to maintenance work, the cable car reached a certain point and then continued with the bus, leaving us at the foot of the steps. We managed to climb the steps; it was a wonderful experience. In our "bad luck," we were lucky. The routes are doable, and there are two short sections with a glass bridge (for a fee). It's definitely worth a visit.

Highly recommended. We loved it. We bought the tickets the day before and only the 3:00 PM tickets were left. It was wonderful because we didn't have to queue at any point and there were fewer people.

Tianmen Mountain Map & Layout

Tianmen Mountain Map

The park is structured vertically in three main zones:

  1. Mountain Gate / Lower Area: Ticket offices, parking, and lower stations for both cableways.
  2. Tianmen Cave Area: The cave plaza, Stairway to Heaven, and express cableway upper station.
  3. Summit Area: Cliff walkways, glass skywalks, Tianmen Mountain Temple, and the upper station of the main cableway.

The route map clearly shows the three travel lines (A, B, C), cableway segments, escalator connections, and shuttle bus routes. It also indicates that the upper section of the Tianmen Mountain Cableway is currently suspended, with service operating via the middle station and express cableway instead. We recommend reviewing the latest official map in advance to plan your route and avoid backtracking.

Tianmen Mountain, or "Heaven's Gate Mountain," is a natural geological marvel located in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, China. Rising 1,518.6 meters above sea level, it is world-famous for its sheer limestone cliffs, thrilling high-altitude walkways, and the iconic Tianmen Cave—a massive natural karst hole carved into the cliffside.

  • How Far Is It from Downtown Zhangjiajie? Tianmen Mountain is situated just 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) south of downtown Zhangjiajie. Its city-center cableway station makes it one of China’s most easily accessible alpine national parks.
  • How Many Steps Does Tianmen Mountain Have? The famous "Stairway to Heaven" leading up to Tianmen Cave consists of precisely 999 steep steps, a symbolic number in Chinese culture representing eternity and longevity. (An internal mountain escalator is available for visitors who prefer to skip the climb.)

Key Highlights

  • The Longest Passenger Cableway: Spans over 7,400 meters, taking passengers straight from downtown Zhangjiajie over urban roofs and lush forest valleys to the mountain's upper reaches.
  • Glass Skywalks: Transparent glass trails (including the famous Coiling Dragon Cliff Walk) clinging to vertical cliffs 1,400 meters above sea level.
  • Tianmen Cave (Heaven's Gate): A giant natural water-eroded portal measuring 131.5 meters tall, creating a dramatic gateway through the mountain face.
  • Tongtian Avenue (99-Bend Road): A mountain pass featuring 99 sharp hairpin turns, weaving along steep canyon walls.

The main entrance and lower cableway stations are easily reachable by taxi, bus, or shuttle from the city center, the train station, and the airport.

By Train

Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (high-speed rail) is located downtown.

How to Go Up the Mountain: Routes A, B & C By Cable

Tianmen Mountain offers three main visitor routes, each combining different modes of transport — cable cars, shuttle buses, and escalators — so you can customize your ascent and descent experience.

How to Go Up the Mountain: Routes A, B & C Explained

How to Go Up the Mountain: Routes A, B & C Explained

Route A: Cableway Up, Express Cableway Down

  • Ascent: Take the full Tianmen Mountain Cableway from the downtown lower station all the way to the mountain top.
  • Descent: Walk through the summit trails, then take the 7-level trans-mountain escalator down to Tianmen Cave. From there, take the Tianmen Cave Express Cableway down to the mountain gate area, and finally a shuttle bus back to the city.
  • Best for: Those who want the iconic cableway experience first and prefer going downhill on foot.

Route B: Express Cableway Up, Cableway Down

  • Ascent: Take a shuttle bus from the city to the mountain gate, then ride the Tianmen Cave Express Cableway up to Tianmen Cave area. Climb the Stairway to Heaven or take escalators up to the summit.
  • Descent: Take the main Tianmen Mountain Cableway all the way back down to the city lower station.
  • Best for: Those who want to tackle the famous 999-step stairway early and save the cableway panorama for the descent.

Route C: Express Cableway Round Trip

  • Both ascent and descent use the Tianmen Cave Express Cableway, combined with shuttle buses to/from the city.
  • Best for: Travelers on a tighter schedule or those who prefer not to ride the full-length cableway.

Key Transport Features Inside the Park

  • Tianmen Mountain Cableway: Stretching roughly 7,500 meters, it is one of the world's longest passenger cableways, gliding over the famous 99-bend Tongtian Avenue (Sky Avenue) carved into the cliffside.
  • Tianmen Cave Express Cableway: A shorter, steeper cableway connecting the mountain gate area directly to Tianmen Cave plaza.
  • 7-Level Trans-Mountain Escalator: An impressive series of indoor escalators built inside the mountain, transporting visitors between the summit and Tianmen Cave without climbing.
  • Stairway to Heaven (999 Steps): A steep, iconic stone staircase leading up to Tianmen Cave. It can be climbed on foot or bypassed via escalators.
  • Shuttle Buses: Run between the city lower station and the mountain gate, navigating the legendary 99 hairpin turns of Tongtian Avenue.

Best Time to Visit Tianmen Mountain

The best months to visit Tianmen Mountain are April through June and September through October, when temperatures are mild, rainfall is moderate, and visibility is generally good.

  • Spring (April–June): Lush greenery, blooming flowers, and occasional mist create dreamlike, ink-painting scenery.
  • Summer (July–August): Warm and humid, but the mountain offers cooler relief from the city heat. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and can produce stunning sea-of-clouds effects, though trails may be slippery.
  • Autumn (September–October): Crisp air, clear skies, and excellent visibility make this ideal for photography.
  • Winter (December–February): Snow-covered peaks are breathtaking, but Tianmen Cave and the winding mountain road are often closed due to ice. The glass walkways may also be closed for safety.

Early mornings are generally the best time of day to visit, as crowds are thinner and morning mist often creates magical atmospheric effects.

Pro Tips for Visiting Tianmen Mountain

Pro Tips for Visiting Tianmen Mountain
  1. Wear non-slip hiking shoes. Walkways can become slippery after rain, especially the glass platforms.
  2. Bring a light jacket. Temperatures at the summit are noticeably cooler than at the base, and wind can be strong.
  3. Arrive early to beat crowds. The cableway and popular glass walkways can have long wait times on weekends and holidays.
  4. Choose your route wisely. If you have knee issues, opt for Route A (cable up, walk down) to minimize steep climbing.
  5. Beware of unlicensed guides and tour touts at the entrance. Use official channels or the Zhangjiajie smart tourism app for planning.
  6. Do not feed monkeys along the trails; they can become aggressive.
  7. Allow 5–7 hours for a full visit including the summit loop and Tianmen Cave.

I enjoyed the park even in the rain. Walking along the well-maintained paths was very relaxing. There are many additional activities, but you'll have to pay extra for them. It's a shame the rain made the water in the canyon a dirty brown instead of blue.

Kinda tourist trappy. The lake is beautiful. There are actors along the boat route reenacting life on the lake hundreds of years ago along with singers perform traditional songs.

A completely different experience from Zhangjiajie's other attractions. Huanglong Cave is a vast underground world of stalactites, stalagmites, lakes, and natural passages, illuminated to create almost surreal scenes. The visit is surprisingly engaging: between hiking, caves, and a short boat ride, you'll pass through truly spectacular environments. It's not the typical Zhangjiajie stop you'd expect, and that's precisely its strength. If you have time, it's definitely worth including in your itinerary.

The place is quite charming, a mixture of markets and mini-performances. Keep in mind that in the evenings it's incredibly crowded, with intense smells, and it's difficult to get out by taxi.
