Where Is Zhangjiajie Located? Zhangjiajie Location Map

Zhangjiajie Location Map

Source: Wikipedia

Zhangjiajie sits in the north-west part of Hunan Province, in central China. If you look at a map of China, it's inland, roughly between Changsha (the provincial capital) and Chongqing. The whole region is surrounded by mountains, forests, and river valleys, which is part of what makes the scenery so dramatic.

I mention this because it matters for your travel time. Zhangjiajie is not right next to any mega-city, so most people fly in or take a high-speed train from Changsha.

  • Distance from Changsha: ~330 km
  • Distance from Guangzhou: ~900 km
  • Distance from Shanghai: ~1,200 km
  • Distance from Beijing: ~1,500 km

How Do You Get to Zhangjiajie?

How Do You Get to Zhangjiajie? Zhangjiajie Transportation Map By Train

By Air

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is the main air gateway. Direct flights connect it to most major Chinese cities, and flight times are shorter than you might expect.

  • Beijing → Zhangjiajie: ~1,500 km, ~2.5-hour direct flight
  • Shanghai → Zhangjiajie: ~1,200 km, ~2-hour direct flight
  • Guangzhou → Zhangjiajie: ~900 km, ~1.5-hour direct flight
  • Shenzhen → Zhangjiajie: ~950 km, ~1.5-hour direct flight
  • Changsha → Zhangjiajie: ~330 km, ~1-hour direct flight

After you land, the city centre is only 5 km away (about 10 to 15 minutes by car). The Wulingyuan Scenic Area is further out, around 30 to 35 km, which takes 45 to 60 minutes by car.

I usually book my flights to Zhangjiajie through Trip.com because the price comparison is straightforward and you can bundle flights with hotels if you want.

How Do You Get to Zhangjiajie? Zhangjiajie Transportation Map By Flight

By Train

Zhangjiajie has two railway stations, and they serve different types of trains. This is important because picking the wrong station can add extra transfer time.

  • Zhangjiajie West Railway Station handles high-speed trains. It's about 10 km from the city centre, roughly 20 minutes by car.
  • Zhangjiajie Railway Station handles conventional trains. It's much closer to the city centre, within walking distance or a short taxi ride.

High-speed train routes:

  • Changsha → Zhangjiajie West: ~330 km, ~3.5 to 4 hours
  • Chongqing → Zhangjiajie West: ~670 km, ~5 to 6 hours
  • Guangzhou → Zhangjiajie West: ~900 km, ~6 to 7 hours

Conventional train routes (slower but cheaper):

  • Beijing → Zhangjiajie Railway Station: ~1,500 km, ~17 to 20 hours
  • Shanghai → Zhangjiajie Railway Station: ~1,200 km, ~15 to 18 hours
  • Guangzhou → Zhangjiajie Railway Station: ~900 km, ~12 to 14 hours

From either station, you can take a taxi or bus to Wulingyuan Scenic Area (about 45 to 60 minutes) or Tianmen Mountain (about 15 to 20 minutes).

What Does Zhangjiajie City Look Like on a Map?

When you first look at a Zhangjiajie city map, the thing that stands out is how spread out everything is. The transport hubs, city centre, and main scenic area are not clustered together. They're separated by roads and mountains.

Key Locations on the City Map

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport

  • Located about 5 km south-west of the city centre
  • Drive time to city centre: 10 to 15 minutes under normal traffic
  • Taxis and airport buses connect to both the city centre and Wulingyuan

Zhangjiajie Railway Station (Conventional Trains)

  • Sits close to the city centre
  • Walking distance or short taxi ride to many downtown hotels
  • Convenient if you arrive on a conventional train and plan to explore Tianmen Mountain first

  • This is the station most high-speed train travellers will use

What Attractions Are in Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie Tourist Map

If you look at a tourist map of Zhangjiajie, you'll see the attractions are grouped in different areas rather than all in one place. Here's how they're laid out.

  • Tianmen Mountain sits right next to Zhangjiajie City, close to the airport and railway stations. It's easy to visit on your arrival or departure day because you don't have to travel far.
  • Wulingyuan Scenic Area is where the big names are: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, and Tianzi Mountain. It's about 30 to 35 km north of the city, which takes 45 to 60 minutes by car. Wulingyuan Town is right beside the park entrances and is the best base for exploring these areas.
  • Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge lie further east of Wulingyuan, roughly 30 to 40 km away. Most people visit them as a separate half-day or full-day trip.
Wulingyuan Scenic Area Map

Inside Wulingyuan Scenic Area

Wulingyuan isn't one single park. It's a large protected area made up of several connected scenic zones, all linked by internal shuttle buses, hiking trails, and cable cars.

  • Zhangjiajie National Forest Park sits at the heart of the map. It's the most visited section and home to the iconic sandstone pillars that inspired the Avatar landscapes. This area includes Yuanjiajie, Golden Whip Stream, and the Bailong Elevator. Most first-time visitors spend the bulk of their time here.
  • Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve is north of the forest park on the map. It's known for wide viewpoints, sea-of-clouds scenery, and sunrise spots. Shuttle buses and a cable car connect it to the forest park, so you can easily combine both areas in one or two days.
  • Yangjiajie is on the western side of the Wulingyuan map. It's a quieter area with steeper hiking routes and dramatic ridgelines.
  • Suoxiyu Scenic Area is nearby and features valleys, streams, and gentler walking paths.

These last two areas are less crowded, which is nice if you want to escape the busiest viewpoints while still staying within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.

Tianmen Mountain Map & Cableway Routes

Tianmen Mountain Map

Tianmen Mountain sits right next to Zhangjiajie City, and the map shows two main ways to reach the summit: by cable car or by scenic bus.

The Tianmen Mountain Cableway is the most famous route. It runs directly from the city centre up to the mountain top. It's one of the longest cable cars in the world, and the views as you ascend are pretty incredible.

The alternative route uses a scenic bus that climbs the mountain via the legendary 99-bend mountain road. The bus stops near Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave) before continuing to the upper areas. On some ticket types, you go up one way and come down the other. The map makes this clear at a glance.

At the top, a circular walkway system links the cliff-edge glass walkways, forest paths, and viewing platforms. Follow the colour-coded paths on the map, and allow extra time for queues at the popular glass sections.

Heaven's Gate is marked as a separate area below the summit. You reach it by a long escalator or stairway.

You can book Tianmen Mountain tickets in advance to skip the ticket window queues.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge Map

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge Map

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon map shows the layout of one of the most thrilling attractions in the region, centred around the Glass Bridge.

From the entrance, paths lead visitors along well-marked trails that connect the canyon floor, riverside viewpoints, and the suspension bridge itself. The Glass Bridge spans the canyon and offers spectacular aerial views of the cliffs and river below.

Other features marked on the map include:

  • Waterfall viewing areas on the side trails
  • Picnic zones
  • Shuttle bus stops
  • Elevator access points

If you're visiting the Glass Bridge, I'd recommend getting there early. It gets crowded by mid-morning, and the glass walkway feels a lot more impressive when you're not packed in with hundreds of other people.

What's the Best 1-Day Hiking Route in Zhangjiajie?

What's the Best 1-Day Hiking Route in Zhangjiajie?

If you only have one full day in the National Forest Park, this core loop covers the highlights without unnecessary backtracking. I've done this route myself, and it works well for first-time visitors.

Start: East Gate
Begin your journey at the park entrance.

1. Take the shuttle bus to Bailong Elevator
The shuttle bus ride takes you up to the base of the Bailong Elevator, which is the fastest way to get up to the mountain-top viewing areas.

2. Explore Yuanjiajie
This is where you'll see the Avatar-style sandstone peaks up close. Spend a couple of hours walking the viewpoints here.

3. Take the shuttle bus to Tianzi Mountain
From Yuanjiajie, catch the internal shuttle to Tianzi Mountain for panoramic views over the "sea of peaks."

4. Descend and walk Golden Whip Stream
In the afternoon, descend gradually and finish with a relaxed walk along the Golden Whip Stream. The riverside trail is flat and scenic, which makes it a nice way to end the day.

Finish: Back at the East Gate
The Golden Whip Stream trail leads back toward the exit area.

This route combines cable transport and hiking efficiently. You cover the park's most iconic landscapes without wearing yourself out on day one.

I really enjoyed the trip to Tianmen Mountain. The views are simply magnificent (you're so high up it's breathtaking). The climb up the stairs was fascinating and not the easiest 😄 Then we walked the entire yellow trail through the park, rode the lift, admired the beautiful views, and had a delicious snack. Overall, it's a spectacular place, especially for those who love mountains and nature.

The lake and boat ride is beautiful!! There were three singing performances on the route. The rest of the area is also very much worth visiting, stunning waterfalls. We did the hike to Yingwo Village, it was a little challenging but the views were worth it!
Huanglong Cave

Huanglong Cave exceeded all my expectations! It's not just an ordinary karst cavity, but an entire underground world where nature has been creating its sculptures for millions of years. As soon as you descend inside, you realize you've entered another reality: giant stalactites hang from the ceiling like stone chandeliers, and mighty stalagmites rise up to meet them—some reaching several dozen meters high, looking like the ancient columns of a giant's palace. A boat ride along the underground river is a particular delight. You board the boat, and it glides gently over the water, reflecting the multicolored lighting of the vaults. All around, there's complete silence, only the sound of drops falling into the water. It's incredibly atmospheric and a little mysterious—you feel like an explorer of a lost world. The cave has a comfortable temperature, and there are well-equipped paths and lighting, making it safe and comfortable to explore. Overall, Huanglong is one of the most memorable places in China.

Where Should You Stay in Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie Accommodation Map

A hotel map helps you choose the best base depending on your itinerary and which attractions you plan to visit. While hotels are scattered across the region, most travellers focus on two main areas: Zhangjiajie City and Wulingyuan Town.

Zhangjiajie City

  • Best for: Arrivals, departures, and city convenience
  • Proximity: Close to Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, train stations, and local restaurants
  • Drawback: About 30 to 35 km from the National Forest Park, so daily travel to the main scenic areas takes 45 to 60 minutes

Stay in the city if you're only passing through, arriving late, or leaving early the next day. It's also the better choice if you want more restaurant and nightlife options.

Wulingyuan Town

  • Best for: Main sightseeing days in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, and Grand Canyon Glass Bridge
  • Proximity: Walking distance or a short shuttle ride to most park entrances and cable cars
  • Benefit: Saves travel time, allows for early starts to avoid crowds, and easy access to restaurants, shops, and smaller guesthouses

Stay in Wulingyuan Town if you have two or more days of sightseeing planned. The time you save on commuting adds up, and being able to start early before the crowds arrive makes a real difference at the popular viewpoints.

I usually compare hotel prices on Trip.com before booking. You can filter by location, star rating, and guest reviews to find something that fits your budget.
