Rooms were subpar with renovations and cleaning desperately needed. The tub had black mold growing in the caulk and on tub surface. The bathroom was so cramped the toilet seat didn't completely open as it hit the countertop. The cramped size and plastic hardware were reminiscent of an RV bathroom. The step up to the bathroom was a wobbly small wooden platform which was dangerous for someone with an ankle injury who was wearing a boot but couldn't in the room. The Japanese style dinner wasn't very good compared to the others we had at other hotels and the bar options were limited. Most other places had a white wine, plum wine or plum liqueur but not here. Beer or sake were the options. The tour operators said this was a traditional Japanese hotel but I found it to be a run down mess. The Beppu area is super cute and I would come back to the area but chose a different hotel to stay in.

This is a Showa-era hot spring hotel located a few minutes' walk from the Kannawa Onsen entrance intersection, and as expected, the building is quite old. The guest rooms are Japanese-Western style, with half bed space and half tatami space, and the rooms have been fairly well maintained. The large public bath is on the first floor, and the changing room has shelves and baskets for changing clothes, but perhaps in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of bathers has been reduced and the number of baskets has been limited to about two-thirds. The indoor bath is a rock bath, and outside there is an open-air bath, sauna, and cold bath, and the water is hot and nice, with natural spring water. However, bathing is only available until 11pm, so if you drink too much in Beppu town you won't be able to get into the hot spring. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal in the banquet hall on the second floor, and there was no mini buffet as there were not many guests staying.
