Residence Inn Blacksburg-University

Blacksburg|0.9km from St. Luke and Odd Fellows Hall
Visited property in April for a reunion at Virginia Tech. Hotel is across the street from the campus alumni center. It’s within walking distance for numerous shops and restaurants. I had two rooms at the property: one for two nights and a second room for one night. The hotel associates worked to get the rooms adjacent for the second night. I really appreciated that effort. Parking is ample and property is clean (including pool area!). The small market area is helpful for last minute food and beverages. The only negative I experienced was the breakfast. The majority of the foods were not tasty or fresh. The breakfast attendant was working very hard (even had her daughter helping for an early weekend hour) so I cannot fault the effort or her attitude (very friendly). It just appears that the default for breakfast at the property is pre-made or pre-packaged goods instead of the normal Residence Inn breakfast you’d find (most RIs have scrambled or boiled eggs, waffle maker, mixed fruit, yogurts, breakfast meats, fresh pastries/bagels/toast, oatmeal, juices, milk, coffee, and maybe a speciality item or two). Despite the breakfast, I would stay here again for any needs at Virginia Tech or in the community. And if staying for a football or basketball game, it’ll be about a 20 minute walk to the stadium or basketball arena (walk straight across the street and keep walking up the hill til you reach the stadium).

1. The hotel is located on the campus of Virginia Tech University. It is very quiet and has a good environment. 2. The facade of the hotel building is made of turkey stone paved by Virginia Tech.

The hotel was nice and clean. Our room was large. We had a 2 Queen suite with a small kitchenette. The staff was very friendly and overall the stay was nice. I had called to request a roll away bed and was told that was no problem. When we got there I was told they don’t have rollaway beds. This was pretty frustrating as we had to rearrange where everyone slept. Housekeeping will not come into do any cleaning unless asked. We didn’t have an issue with this as we just asked for more towels when needed etc. The pool was closed the first day and a half. It was rainy when we got there so it was the only source of entertainment for the kids. The pool area is indoors and very nice. The breakfast was mediocre and there was no variation day by day. We stayed for 5 days and there was less and less available each day. They ran out of salt, yogurt, fruit, etc. The juice is not good at all compared to other Holiday Inn Expresses we have stayed at. When I asked if they had refills the employee told us no, when they run out that’s it until the next order. I’m a platinum member with IHG hotels. We have stayed at quite a few across the country. This was not a good representation of the brand. When we come back to Blacksburg we will find a different hotel.

The hotel's breakfast can be purchased at the front desk. The specific unit price is not clear, but our family bought three for $11, which is not expensive, but the breakfast variety is not a lot. I have eaten it for 15 days, and the surrounding restaurant is in the morning. It is open for business around 9:00, so you can go out and eat. There are a lot of parking spaces in the hotel, all of which are free, and there is no parking space. It is also suitable for children. There is a sofa bed in the room. See many foreigners and couples with two or three children living in a room.

My senior-in-high-school daughter and I were in Blacksburg to do a self-guided tour of Virginia Tech. The front desk staff were awesome. Super friendly at check-in. Early on Sunday one of staff made sure my daughter and I got an Uber in time to get to Squires Center at Virginia Tech to catch our bus. With a car or Lyft/Uber, good location -- just a few minutes from campus and was cheaper than some of the hotels closer to campus.
