A difficult place to review, as its a bit like the curates egg (good in parts), which is probably a little unfair as it was actually good in many areas. On arrival, from outside the premises looked a little unkept, but the interior belied the first impressions, being nicely decorated and laid out, with a roaring woodfire adding to the ambience. The bedroom was quirky with sloping floors (not a criticism, just an observation) although the decor needed tidying up in the window bay. The bed was comfy and the bathroom nicely appointed with lashings of hot water. The service was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful, as was the landlord. The evening meals were well cooked and tasty and reasonably priced and the beer was good. Its a good location for a number of National Trust properties (Batemans, Scotney Castle, Smallhythe and others, as well as the heritage railway at Tenterden. NB if you want the room made over, please put the hanger outside the door or advise the staff
