Westmorland Hotel Tebay

Your staff - overall - are excellent. Special note to Darren on our first stay who was very accommodating and helpful. The food is very good for both dinner and breakfast. The room amenities are excellent and we love the large King bed! We travelled with our little dog both times and got a “Dog Friendly Room” which quite frankly stunk of urine with pee spots very evident on the carpet in multiple spots, urine stains on the walls and urine on the legs of the furniture and bedding. Darren was excellent and changed us to a suitable room with no urine “issues” evident On our return trip a week later, different manager, we got to the room and it stank of urine once again. Was let into another room and more urine smell and very noticeable urine stains on the carpet which I was told was “coffee stains”. No - it was URINE ... Finally we said the we were leaving and would find accommodation elsewhere and the manager found yet another room with no urine stains that smelled fine. I am sure - like most dog owners - we very much appreciate “Dog friendly “ accommodations but putting light coloured carpet in these rooms is setting every stay up for abject failure as there is no way to shampoo and deodorise carpet in between visits. We asked several times why the “Dog friendly” rooms didnt have a laminated wood floor or tiles in them which would be SO simple to mop and deodorise so quickly. And no one knew why that wasnt being done ... Overall the stay was pleasant and we loved the little perks like the discount coupons for the shop but it could be SO much better if management recognised where they could make much better improvements
Patterdale Hotel

Firstly the staff were friendly and efficient, secondly the hotel allowed us to have dinner as a non resident, that’s where the positives ended I’m afraid. We had to pay in advance for the meal and as we went along for drinks, very unusual. Where our true disappointment came was from the quality of the food. Our starter of garlic mushrooms on garlic bread was returned as it was too over powering with garlic. The salmon roulade was adequate. The roast beef was well cooked and quite tender, the vegetables and potatoes had been around too long and lacked flavour and freshness. The stir fry chicken was a poor imitation of the real thing, while it was edible, it was quite bland. Further disappointment came with the deserts, very poor cheesecake, soggy base and rubbery filling. Even the chocolate ice cream had no flavour, just coloured frozen water. It felt like the food was aimed at guests (tourists) who didn’t have a choice and would never be returning anyway. Would recommend the White Lion pub as an alternative in Patterdale.
Norcroft Guest House

I stayed here overnight during the 2022 National Road Rally. Secure parking for my motorcycle where the host welcomed me as I rode in. I had a very comfortable night in a very clean ensuite single room on the second floor. Full English breakfast was delivered to my door spot on 7.30 as requested. Location is a short walk from the town centre where there are plenty of pubs and takeaways etc. Overall an excellent B&B which I will definitely consider for a return visit.
Shap Wells Hotel

Stayed here several times, even a couple of times when they had only just re opened following each of the Covid lockdowns and always enjoyed, had a fab welcome and the rooms are clean. Not saying its perfect for everyone as some of you will not be a fan of the gold and red decor in the rooms , reception and corridors. But its not shabby its just old fashioned. The bathrooms are moden and the bar and restaurant have had a face lift with a not ultra moden colour scheme of cream and blue but it suits the building style. Dont expect spa, gym or pool and dont expect room service or cocktails. But you will always get a warm and friendly welcome and service. The setting is off the beat and track , but worth finding this gem, at the side of the woods , with stream running over waterfall and rock oh and keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels. Food is good at breakfast though no veggie sausages which some did complain about, food is good value in the evening though a limited choice of 4 starters 4 mains and 4 puds including a veggie option. Yorkshire portions for the main and loads of veg. Bar prices higher than pub prices but not that bad for a hotel.

Stafford House Guest House

A beautiful building in a beautiful setting, the gardens are tidy and well maintained, I imagine it to be stunning in the summer when in full bloom. Hazel and Ian were fabulous hosts, they couldn't do enough for us. The rooms are beautifully decorated and immaculately cleaned, fridge with bottled water and fresh fruit was a nice touch and a tea tray full with a good selection of hot drinks, the bathroom was well stocked with any toiletries you could possibly need. Breakfast choices were great, the full English was delicious with local produce used, presentation of all dishes was spot on. We would highly recommend this hidden gem and we would definitely return.
