The Caledonian

It can be a challenge to lug the suitcase to the room but we were lucky and had only a few stairs to manage. Others in the group were not so lucky. Our room - I think the one being shown as I write this - was fine and spacious. A proper desk rather than a coffee table would have been nice as I needed to work on my laptop. The shower was a rather pathetic spray but no worse than almost everywhere we stayed in Scotland. The breakfast was excellent and the staff consistently helpful and welcoming.

This is a great hotel with friendly and welcoming staff. The breakfasts were amazing with great choices and take away chocolates for the day. comfy, warm rooms. Handy location Would highly recommend staying there.

Although this is not a luxury hotel, it would be hard to find a more personable hotel keeper than Thomas. He made our stay a joy. He literally gave the jacket off his back for one of our party to use on a rainy night out. He helped us dry off our wet hiking gear in his boiler room. No request seemed too hard for him to oblige. Our rooms were functional and breakfast was plentiful and good. The hotel is centrally located in Portree. You should enter through the rear to avoid two flights of stairs. Finding that rear entrance can be a little tricky, however.

My hubby and I stayed at this hotel during our three-day Isle of Skye tour with Rabbie. We received a warm welcome by Thomas who is very friendly with great sense of humor (still remember how he described their wifi!) I was surprised that the hotel did not do pre-authorization or any upfront payment. Everything was paid upon check-out! The hotel is close by the center of Portree and very convenient to the restaurants, co-op supermarket, and the town center plaza. Also enjoyed their traditional Scottish breakfast, especially potato scone and haggis! We will definitely come back to visit and stay there again! It was such a wonderful experience!

We loved our stay at the Caledonian Hotel in Portree. The location is excellent for exploring town, and the attached parking lot much appreciated. Breakfast is filling. But we most loved the helpful and welcoming staff. Our vacation rental on Skey canceled at the last minute, and thankfully this property had room in the inn for 2 nights total for us (we were originally only planning a 1-night stay). We were able to switch to another room for the second night with ease. We also appreciated the friendly service at check-in and breakfast. Especially thankful for the breakfast server who recommended hiking nearby Quiraing before we left the island. SO GLAD we took her advice. Yes, the rooms are basic, but for an overnight or two while exploring the gorgeous Isle of Skye, this hotel is great!!

Great hotel in heart of Portrees. Wonderful staff, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is fantastic with choice of cold buffet and hot orders. Room was perfect for 3 adults. Just a charming atmosphere, highly recommend staying here. Don’t let the stairs dissuade you, staff will show you the back entrance that is much easier to navigate.

April 19-22, 2012: My sister and I thank the very kind and very professional staff and management of the Caledonian-Portree Hotel for an excellent stay. We could not have been more comfortable in the spacious family room. We especially enjoyed the generous breakfasts and friendly conversations with these very nice people. We felt safe and well-cared for. Our tour and transportation needs were very easily met due to the hotel's central location. Hopefully someday we will be to return! Best regards and thanks for all!

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our group tour; very pleased indeed! The owners and staff are the nicest, accommodating, and friendliest folks we've met in Skye. They made us feel at home. Breakfast is superb, cooked to order eggs & sausages, hagis, breads, yogurt, variety of items to choose from and very fulfilling.... can't complain! There's a front and back entrance to the inn. There are no elevators & a narrow staircase. We were on the top floor with 2 twin comfy beds w/ private bathroom that overlooks the plaza. There's an ice cream shop on the ground level, a pharmacy across the street, a bakery/pizza place/CO OP grocery a block away. Restaurants, bars, & cafes are all within a block or two. Portree is a cute little seaside town and everything is within walking distance.

I cannot commend the Caledonian Hotel high enough. From the warm friendly welcome, to the free parking, the clean room and lovely en-suite. It was great to get the heads up about how busy Portree was and the recommendation for dinner was spot on. Thank you very much.
