Pension Pukue'e is a stunning place to base a visit to Ua Pou. There were magnificent views of the sea and the unique spires, including from my room's private terrace. I was concerned about finding guides, as Jerome was away. But Elisa connected me with two outstanding guides for a hike to a waterfall, visit with Manfred the chocolate maker, the flower stone beach and a tour of an ancient site with commentary by a hilarious local guide. I ate most of my meals with Elisa and her son. There was delicious seafood at every meal. And on my last night, with a few more guests, Elisa produced a banquet that included lobster for everyone. I felt well taken care of.
