Jeju Island, officially known as Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, is also called Tamna Island, Honeymoon Island, and Romantic Island. Located to the south of the Korean Peninsula, it consists of the largest Korean island, Jeju, and its 26 subsidiary islands. As of September 2023, the total area of the island is 1,850 square kilometers, with a population of 678,000. It is divided into two cities, Jeju and Seogwipo, with Jeju City being the capital. Hallasan, in the center of the island, is 1,950 meters high and is the highest peak in Korea. The main industries are tourism and agriculture. After the Tamna country became a vassal to Silla, the king of Silla, seeing a 'guest star' in the south, bestowed the title of 'Star Lord' to its ruler and 'Prince' to the deputy ruler. In 938, the crown prince of Tamna paid homage to Goryeo and was still granted the titles of 'Star Lord' and 'Prince'. In 1105, King Sukjong of Goryeo abolished the name of Tamna country and established Tamna County. During the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo, it was renamed 'Jeju'. In 1374, King Gongmin dispatched Choi Yeong to subdue Jeju, pacifying the nomadic tribes, and since then Jeju was re-incorporated into the Goryeo territory. In 1981, Seogwi-eup and Jungmun-myeon were merged and upgraded to Seogwipo City. In 2006, Jeju Island became a special self-governing province. Jeju Island's main festivals include the Seogwipo Canola Flower International Walking Festival, Canola Flower Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival, Citrus Marathon, and the Field Fire Festival, among others.
