Don't miss this ancient town when visiting Southern Anhui | Xiuning Wan'an Ancient Town

Wan'an Ancient Town is located 4 kilometers east of Xiuning County in Huangshan City, Anhui Province. The Heng River flows from west to east in a horseshoe shape around the northern bank of the ancient town. It is one of the four major ancient towns of Huizhou. From the first year of Yong'an in the Three Kingdoms period (258 AD) to the ninth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (589 AD), it served as the seat of Xiuning County. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it developed into a commercial hub thanks to its water and land transportation junction. The core area of the ancient town, Wan'an Old Street, is laid out in a fishbone pattern along the Heng River. There are currently 3 ancient towers, 4 ancient bridges, and 12 ancient docks. The street district contains more than 130 traditional buildings from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, maintaining the complete layout of Huizhou-style shops. In 1989, it was designated as a provincial-level historical and cultural protection zone. The ancient town has almost retained its original state, with a low commercial atmosphere and free admission, making it a great choice for traveling in Southern Anhui. The entrance sign to the old street in the ancient town is not very obvious. I drove around three times before finding the entrance, so when driving near the ancient town, be sure to slow down and pay attention to the roadside signs.
