Admittedly, we made the trip off season, so there were not as many tourists, but even so, the quiet of the place stood out. Watch out for my favourite part not featured here, the ancient tree with hundred bear old finger holes used by decades of monks for practice!

It is really amusing for me that even up to this day, the Shaolin temple still accepts students who wish to learn kung fu and there are actually a lot of them. You will see them right away practicing while you walk aroung the grounds of the temple. This is something worth keeping, the tradition and culture of Shaolin must be kept forever and I hope the world could also see how interesting it is to still see them practice Kung fu. We were only day for half a day and even watched the kung fu show but you can definitely spend more time here and see how these practitioners live everyday. How to get here: From Zhengzhou take a bus to Dengfeng from Zhengzhou Bus Station (about 2 hours), and then take a bus to Shaolin Temple (about 20 minutes) or rent a car if there are 4 or 3 of you who can share the cost. A day trip to Shaolin Temple

Definitely add Shaolin Temple to your itinerary while in Zhengzhou. Quick hour and a half drive from the city, the temple is a great way to spend your time. There is hiking, a cable car ride, a cave to explore, a temple and a kung fu show to watch. We went on a very hot day in July, highly recommend buying a ticket for the electric cart. With my US passport, I was not able to buy a ticket via the QR code. We had to go to the ticket office to physically buy a ticket.
