Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu

The room interiors are nice, and the sea views and sunsets are absolutely stunning. However, there's barely any beach; it's mostly grassy areas with sea views and sunsets. The breakfast is quite perfunctory – only five or six types of meat, all chicken, with no beef or seafood. This definitely doesn't justify the 3,000-per-night room rate. The seascape is very beautiful. The Horizon lounge room is small and just average. Breakfast is not very good, only chicken, no seafood, it doesn't match the room charge.

Don't book during the rainy season, don't book during the rainy season, don't book during the rainy season. It's from Sep to Feb. I said 3 times it's important if you don't wanna ruin your holiday. We booked 3D2N in mid Sep. Our holiday turned out to be a staycation nightmare in the resort. We can't do all the water activities neither the jungle trekking. The water heater in our room is not working, we have to shower with shivering cold water in this kind of weather. Lots of big size anta inside the room crawling from the bathroom to the bedroom. Make sure you cleaned up for your snacks and drinks, tie up the garbage bag if you don't want these insects to come to your bed, There is also a landslide happening on our first night, luckily we are not affected as we stayed in the ocean villa. There is only one restaurant in this resort, food prices are the same as SG restaurant pricing, no cheap option here. In room dining needs to pay RM25 extra. Staff service is good but this cannot cover the several run down part of the resort.

I chose this hotel for a one-night stay before heading to the overwater bungalow the next day. Although the room facilities were a bit old, they were very clean. There's a convenience store right downstairs, and it's very close to the pier. The sea breeze was a bit loud at night, but the breakfast was excellent and plentiful.

I had a wonderful stay at this resort. The resort is very beautiful, clean, and peaceful. The staff were friendly and kind, and they even provided an extra bed for my kids, which made our stay more comfortable. The beachfront location is amazing and very convenient for kids to do snorkeling safely. I also love that there were no sandflies, so it felt safe and comfortable for my children. The breakfast was delicious with many good choices. The environment was calm, quiet, and not noisy at all perfect for relaxing and also very suitable for honeymoon couples. I highly recommend this place and would definitely come again.

We stayed in the Ocean Wing. The room was very spacious, but the facilities were a bit old. The plunge pool on the balcony was large, but a bit dirty. Both the swimming pool and the beach were great. The restaurants require advance reservations, which felt a bit like a 'scarcity marketing' tactic. The Italian restaurant wasn't good and the environment wasn't clean. Breakfast was just average, and so was the service. In contrast, the Japanese teppanyaki was excellent, with warm service and good food. The free airport shuttle was a nice touch, but it only runs twice a day, in the morning and evening. The front desk service was very enthusiastic, and they even gave us a local specialty necklace and welcome drinks. Overall, it's a good place for a vacation.

Our stay at the Sagittarius Water Bungalow was absolutely fantastic! From our butler Xiao Gu to all the staff on the water bungalows and even the owners, everyone was incredibly nice. The rooms are equipped with smart Xiaomi home devices, clean and tidy. Opening the curtains reveals the beautiful 'jellyfish sea,' and the scenery is simply captivating. The food at the water bungalows is also delicious; breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner are all included in the price. Airport transfers and boat rides to the island are also covered, making it excellent value for money! We stayed for five days and four nights and didn't want to leave. The atmosphere on the island is also great, with KTV and song requests every night – the owner and his wife sing really well, by the way! The water bungalows offer a lot of entertainment, including sea fishing, snorkeling, glass-bottom boat tours, and drone photography. The local staff (Xiao Hei) are also happy to help with photos 📸. You can even get your diving certification and go on island-hopping day trips, keeping you thoroughly entertained. We came to Semporna specifically to get our diving certification, and the water bungalow's own dive shop is highly recommended. The instructors are very responsible and dedicated. I'd like to thank Xiao Li and Instructor Mohd Rizal Baba Selleh. The prices are fair, and the teaching focuses on the safety and skills of the students, which is very reassuring. The dive shop owner's wife is also super nice. All in all, this trip was incredibly worthwhile, and we'll definitely be back! I'll also be recommending it to my friends and family 😊

I booked a newly renovated room on the 2nd floor of the main building, as requested. First, the cons: it's very remote, far from the city center, and even a single trip to the nearest town costs around 40 Malaysian Ringgit. So, dining options are limited to the hotel. I ate at two hotel restaurants, the VIP building and a seaside Western restaurant. Both had one major characteristic: long waits. After ordering, you have to wait quite a while. If you're used to the faster service in China, you might lose your temper here. The hotel's cleanliness also left much to be desired. There were earplugs from a previous guest in the corner by the bed, which I guess is because some rooms are indeed noisy... There were also quite a few long, yellow hairs on the chairs and floor. The bathroom only provided two bath towels; everything else was forgotten. There was no hand soap on the vanity either. The air conditioning vent also looked quite dirty... Now for the pros: the natural environment is good, the beach is large enough, and the accessible areas were cleaned. There was a lot of trash closer to the edges, but it didn't affect my enjoyment. Monkeys, lizards, squirrels, and geckos were everywhere. It's a great experience for families with children. As for adults... even bikinis were a rare sight, probably because there weren't many guests. I also have to complain about something else. After staying at so many hotels, my assessment is that this is a management issue. Such a beautiful location is not being run well. There was even a notice about a fine for outside food delivery. This notice alone highlights the level of professionalism. Are fines just arbitrarily imposed? Wouldn't it be better to say that bringing outside food requires a cleaning fee? Furthermore, I couldn't add any WeChat contacts, neither the Chinese butler nor the Chinese front desk.

This resort is expansive, with lush tropical palm trees everywhere, directly facing the magnificent South China Sea. You can enjoy a breathtaking, 'god-tier' sea sunset without even leaving the hotel. The hotel boasts its own private pier, allowing direct boarding for trips to Mantanani Island and Mengalum Island. This means no more early morning rushes to the city pier, saving a lot of travel hassle. The staggered, oversized pools are quiet and uncrowded, and strolling along the private beach is incredibly relaxing. With comprehensive family-friendly facilities, traveling with kids is made exceptionally easy. The breakfast buffet offers a rich variety, and the grounds are tranquil and private, far from the city's hustle and bustle. The guest rooms have a vintage, time-honored feel, which, while not cutting-edge, doesn't detract from the vacation experience at all. My entire stay was comfortable and rejuvenating. It truly stands out as a top choice among Kota Kinabalu resorts, and I would definitely choose to stay here again on my next visit to Sabah.

After poring over countless guides, I finally picked this hotel as my first stay in Kota Kinabalu, and checking in was a breeze even with our late-night flight! The next morning, I was absolutely thrilled when I opened the curtains to an amazing sea view. After breakfast, I went straight down to explore. I couldn't believe how beautiful the water was so close to the city, no need to go out to the open sea! I immediately changed into my swimsuit and hit the hotel beach. When I crumbled some bread into the water, a bunch of little fish swam right up – instant snorkeling! In the evening, we just walked to the beach right there and enjoyed a gorgeous sunset, no need to bother with Tanjung Aru Beach at all. The experience was fantastic! This hotel offers incredible value for money, and luckily, we didn't encounter any of the downsides I'd read about online before our stay!
