Xi'an Bell Tower(Xi'an Bell Tower, Xi'an City Bell and Drum Tower)

🏯 The Bell Tower and Drum Tower are located in the heart of Xi’an. For centuries, they served as the city’s official timekeeping system, marking the hours for local residents. 🥁 Drum Tower (鼓楼) Built in 1380 during the Ming Dynasty, inside this 34 meter tall tower you could find an impressive collection of ancient drums. 📸 Pictures 3, 4, 5 🔔 Bell Tower (钟楼) Built in 1384, this 36 meter tall tower is one of Xi’an’s most iconic buildings and a symbol of the city. 📸 Pictures 1, 2 ✨ Both towers are outstanding examples of traditional Chinese architecture. I recommend visiting them both during the day and at night - the atmosphere is completely different, and you’ll be able to take amazing photos at both times.

This time in Xi’an, I made the Bell Tower my first stop for a simple reason: it’s not just a landmark, but the place where the old city’s lively atmosphere is most concentrated. Take a slow walk around the Bell Tower in the morning and shoot the night view at dusk. The pace feels much more relaxed than just checking it off a list. Highlights: The most worthwhile spots near the Bell Tower aren’t just the tower itself, but also the nearby Muslim Quarter, Drum Tower area, Shuyuanmen, and South Street. In the morning, you can admire the details of the ancient architecture. The Bell Tower’s flying eaves, blue bricks, and wooden windows all carry a strong sense of history. In the afternoon, explore the nearby alleys for snacks like roujiamo, yangrou paomo, liangpi, and zenggao. At night, return to the Bell Tower area to see the lights come on. Xi’an’s night scene truly captures the vibe of an ancient capital. Photo spots: I think the best shots aren’t taken in the crowded main entrance but at these locations: 1. Near the Bell Tower underground passage exit: use the crosswalk and street lines as foreground to add depth to your photos. 2. Outer alleys of the Muslim Quarter: perfect for capturing the lively atmosphere with red lanterns and snack stalls full of Xi’an flavor. 3. Near Shuyuanmen: the blue brick roads, gate towers, and tree shade create a quiet, artistic vibe. 4. Sidewalk opposite the Bell Tower: at night, stand a bit farther back to capture people and the Bell Tower lights in the same frame. 5. Twilight blue hour: when the lights just come on and the sky isn’t fully dark yet, the night view is at its cleanest. Tips to avoid pitfalls: The Bell Tower area is crowded with tourists, so avoid pushing into crowds to take photos right away. Snack stall prices vary, so check the menu before ordering in popular areas. It gets busy at night, so keep an eye on your phone and bag. For clean photos, try to visit early in the morning or at dusk for a much better experience. Overall, the Xi’an Bell Tower isn’t a place to just snap one tourist photo and leave. Take your time to explore and you’ll truly feel the old city’s lively spirit and historical depth.

The Xi'an Bell Tower truly belongs to those city landmarks that you feel it's a pity not to visit, but once you do, you're amazed. During the day, the architectural details are very clear—the gray tiles, flying eaves, and red pillars all evoke the ancient capital feel; at night, when the lights come on, it transforms into a completely different atmosphere. Highlights: The Bell Tower is best planned together with Xi'an's old streets. You can admire the architecture during the day and enjoy the night view in the evening. The nearby neighborhoods are full of lively local life; after visiting the Bell Tower, you can conveniently try some snacks and experience the lifestyle of Xi'an's old city. If you have enough time, it's recommended to visit both during the day and at night to experience the completely different atmospheres. Photo spots: During the day, it's best to shoot the front of the building; when the sky is clear, it looks very refreshing. At dusk, side lighting is great, making the eaves appear warmer and more layered. For night shots, a low-angle upward shot is recommended to capture the Bell Tower along with the city lights in the frame. To avoid crowds, you can stand a bit farther away and use the street as the foreground. Tips to avoid pitfalls: Don't just take photos by the roadside, as traffic and crowds will affect your shots. The square is very crowded during holidays, so it's best to arrive early. If you just want to take photos, you don't necessarily have to climb the tower; the exterior spots already make great shots. There are many snack stalls nearby, so be sure to keep an eye on your belongings.

These are landmark buildings and quintessential spots for photos. 🏯 They look spectacular during the day and are breathtakingly beautiful when lit up at night. 🌌 Additionally, whether or not you choose to climb the towers is entirely up to your personal preference.

#photovsrealitytravel Standing in the center of Xi’an at night and seeing the Bell Tower lit up for the first time completely blows away any expectations set by travel blogs and photos. In most online pictures, the Bell Tower is captured during the day as a classic, traditional wooden structure sitting quietly in the middle of a modern city roundabout. While it looks historic, daytime photos make it seem like a static museum piece cut off from the urban rush around it. In reality, stepping out of the underground pedestrian subway at night transforms the entire experience into something magical and grand. The multi-tiered wooden eaves and golden roof tiles glow brilliantly against the night sky, illuminated by hundreds of golden lights that make the ancient architecture look almost heavenly. The contrast between the centuries-old dynastic structure and the vibrant, neon-lit modern traffic swirling in a massive ring around it is something a still photograph simply cannot capture. The scale of the tower is also much more impressive up close, towering majestically over the city center. It feels less like a quiet monument and more like the beating heart of ancient and modern Xi’an combined. Have you ever visited a city landmark that completely transformed and stunned you once the sun went down?

10 Must-Try Foods in Xi’an, China 🇨🇳🍜 A Food Lover’s Guide to the Ancient Capital Forget ordinary sightseeing for a moment — Xi’an is a city best discovered one delicious bite at a time. Imagine biting into a freshly baked meat-filled bun, watching steaming bowls of lamb soup arrive at a bustling local restaurant, and slurping wide, hand-pulled noodles coated in fragrant chilli oil. Welcome to Xi’an, one of China’s most exciting destinations for food lovers! Once the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, Xi’an has developed a distinctive food culture shaped by Shaanxi traditions and Hui Muslim culinary heritage. From hearty wheat-based dishes to sweet traditional desserts, every street offers something tempting to discover. If you are planning a trip to Xi’an, here are 10 must-try local foods that deserve a place on your foodie bucket list. 1. Roujiamo — Xi’an’s Famous Chinese Burger No foodie trip to Xi’an is complete without roujiamo. This iconic street food features tender, slow-braised meat packed inside a freshly baked flatbread. The outside is wonderfully crisp, while the inside is filled with juicy, flavourful meat. Every bite delivers a satisfying combination of textures and savoury goodness. Why try it? It is convenient, affordable and perfect for eating between sightseeing stops. Where to find it: Local food stalls and traditional eateries around the Muslim Quarter and Sajinqiao. Pork versions are common elsewhere in the city, while halal establishments typically offer beef or lamb. 2. Biangbiang Noodles — The Legendary Belt-Wide Noodles These oversized hand-pulled noodles are among Xi’an’s most recognisable dishes. Their impressive width and chewy texture make them instantly memorable. Usually served with chilli oil, garlic, vinegar and seasonings, the noodles are mixed together to create a bold, aromatic flavour. Some versions also include vegetables, tomatoes or meat toppings. Why try it? The dramatic noodles look fantastic in food photographs, and their rich, spicy flavour captures the character of northwestern Chinese cuisine. Foodie tip: Ask for less chilli if you prefer a milder taste. 3. Yangrou Paomo — Comforting Lamb Soup with Bread For a true taste of traditional Xi’an cuisine, order yangrou paomo. This hearty dish combines tender lamb, a rich broth, vermicelli and small pieces of flatbread. Part of the fun is preparing the bread yourself by breaking it into small pieces before handing it to the kitchen. The bread absorbs the delicious broth, creating a wonderfully comforting meal. Why try it? It offers a unique dining experience that combines local food traditions with deep, savoury flavours. Best time to enjoy it: A cool morning or evening, when a warm bowl feels especially satisfying. 4. Liangpi — Refreshing Cold Noodles After exploring Xi’an’s historic landmarks, liangpi is a refreshing option for a quick meal or snack. These cold noodles are dressed with vinegar, chilli oil, garlic and other seasonings. Depending on the variety, they can have a smooth, slippery texture or a slightly chewy bite. Cucumber and other garnishes add freshness. Why try it? The combination of tangy, spicy and savoury flavours makes liangpi particularly appealing during warmer weather. Foodie tip: Pair it with roujiamo for a classic local-style meal. 5. Yangrou Chuan’r — Cumin-Grilled Lamb Skewers Follow the smoky aroma through Xi’an’s lively food streets and you may find yourself standing beside a grill piled with lamb skewers. The meat is seasoned with cumin, chilli and other spices before being grilled until fragrant and lightly charred. The result is juicy, savoury and full of northwestern Chinese character. Why try it? These skewers are ideal for sharing while exploring the city’s evening food scene. Where to enjoy them: Traditional barbecue stalls and eateries around the Muslim Quarter. 6. Guantang Baozi — Soup-Filled Steamed Buns These delicate steamed buns contain savoury broth and a flavourful filling inside a thin wrapper. Carefully pick one up with chopsticks, take a small bite and let the hot soup escape before enjoying the filling. Their soft texture and rich taste make them a satisfying choice for breakfast or a light meal. Why try it? They offer a different experience from Xi’an’s famous noodles and flatbreads. Foodie tip: Let the buns cool slightly before eating to avoid burning your mouth. 7. Zenggao — Sweet Sticky Rice Cake Looking for something sweet? Zenggao is a traditional Shaanxi dessert made by steaming glutinous rice with dates and, in many versions, red beans. The long steaming process produces a soft, sticky texture and a naturally sweet flavour. Its glossy appearance and rich date aroma make it a popular traditional snack. Why try it? It provides a delicious contrast to the city’s savoury and spicy dishes. Where to find it: Traditional breakfast stalls and local snack shops. 8. Shizi Bing — Traditional Persimmon Cakes Persimmon cakes are a well-known sweet treat in Xi’an, often made with persimmon pulp and flour and filled with ingredients such as red bean paste or other sweet fillings. Depending on the preparation, the exterior may be lightly crisp while the centre remains soft and sweet. Why try it? These golden treats offer a taste of traditional Shaanxi dessert culture and make a lovely snack while exploring the old streets. Foodie tip: Try one freshly prepared for the best texture. 9. Suantang Shuijiao — Dumplings in Tangy Soup If you enjoy dumplings, try suantang shuijiao, which combines boiled dumplings with a tangy, aromatic soup. The broth typically features vinegar, chilli oil and seasonings that give it a lively balance of sourness and spice. The dumplings provide a soft, savoury filling that complements the soup beautifully. Why try it? It is warming, satisfying and an excellent alternative to dry noodle dishes. Best for: Travellers who want a comforting local meal with plenty of flavour. 10. Bingfeng — Xi’an’s Beloved Orange Soda Complete your Xi’an food adventure with Bingfeng, a locally famous orange-flavoured soft drink. Its sweet, fizzy taste makes a refreshing companion to rich noodles, roujiamo and other traditional dishes. For a simple introduction to local food culture, try it alongside liangpi and roujiamo. Why try it? Discovering a destination also means experiencing its everyday favourites, and this familiar local drink is part of Xi’an’s food identity. Foodie tip: Look for it in local restaurants and small eateries. 📍 Where Should You Go for Xi’an Street Food? Muslim Quarter A lively introduction to Xi’an’s food culture, with traditional halal dishes, grilled skewers, flatbreads and bustling snack stalls. It is especially atmospheric in the evening. Sajinqiao A popular area for exploring local eateries and traditional breakfast foods. Wander through the neighbourhood and look for busy shops specialising in noodles, paomo and other regional favourites. Around the Bell Tower Convenient for travellers staying in the city centre. You can combine sightseeing, shopping and a food adventure without travelling far. My tip: Explore beyond the busiest tourist-facing streets, compare menus and prices, and choose stalls with good food turnover. Remember that the Muslim Quarter specialises in halal food, while other Xi’an dishes and eateries may use different ingredients and cooking traditions. 🗓️ How to Plan a One-Day Xi’an Food Adventure · Breakfast: Enjoy guantang baozi or zenggao. · Lunch: Try yangrou paomo or biangbiang noodles. · Afternoon snack: Cool down with liangpi and sample a traditional persimmon cake. · Evening: Explore the Muslim Quarter for lamb skewers and roujiamo. · After dinner: Finish with a cold Bingfeng orange soda. You do not need to eat all ten dishes in one day. Share portions with your travel companions so you can sample more without feeling too full. ❤️ Final Thoughts: Come for the History, Stay for the Food Xi’an is famous for the Terracotta Warriors, ancient city walls and magnificent Tang-dynasty landmarks, but its food culture deserves just as much attention. From the satisfying crunch of roujiamo to the bold flavours of biangbiang noodles and the comforting warmth of yangrou paomo, each dish offers a different way to discover the city. What makes Xi’an special is not simply the variety of food, but the traditions behind it. Local recipes, bustling markets and generations of culinary craftsmanship bring the ancient capital to life in ways that no photograph alone can capture. My recommendation? Start with roujiamo, make time for a bowl of authentic paomo, and leave room for a sweet persimmon cake. You might arrive in Xi’an for its history, but the flavours could become some of your favourite travel memories.
