Food Guide

Sapporo's food scene is renowned for its miso ramen with rich, flavorful broth and unique toppings, the social and savory Jingisukan barbecue, the aromatic and spicy soup curry, and an abundance of fresh seafood, reflecting the city's culinary diversity and regional specialties.

Sapporo is celebrated for its miso ramen, a dish featuring a rich broth flavored with miso paste and typically topped with minced pork, chashu pork, soft-boiled eggs, and vegetables. The noodles used are often thick and curly, and popular toppings include butter and corn, which add a distinct local flavor to the dish. Miso ramen is a staple in Sapporo's culinary scene and can be enjoyed at various eateries throughout the city, including the famous Ganso Ramen Yokocho, or Original Ramen Alley.

Also known as Genghis Khan, this unique barbecue dish features tender strips of lamb or mutton cooked over a dome-shaped grill, often accompanied by vegetables like bean sprouts, cabbage, and pumpkin. Jingisukan is a distinctive Hokkaido specialty, with Sapporo being a prime location to savor this soul food, which is marinated in an apple and onion sauce to enhance its flavor. It is a social dining experience that reflects the region's agricultural heritage and the popularity of lamb in Hokkaido.

Originating from Sapporo, soup curry is a spicier and more flavorful version of Japanese curry, served with a variety of roasted vegetables and often bone-in chicken thigh. The dish is characterized by its thin, soup-like consistency and a complex spice profile that may remind diners of Indian or Thai curries. Soup curry is a must-try for those looking to experience a unique and aromatic Hokkaido creation.

Sapporo's proximity to the sea ensures a bounty of fresh seafood, including crab, uni (sea urchin), hotate (scallops), and various types of fish. Kaisendon, a bowl of sushi rice topped with fresh seafood, is a popular way to enjoy the local catch. The city's markets, such as the Nijo Fish Market, offer an opportunity to sample seafood that is both fresh and reasonably priced.

Transportation

Sapporo's transportation infrastructure is well-developed, with New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station being the primary gateways for intercity travel.

New Chitose Airport, the largest airport in Hokkaido, is located a short distance from Sapporo and serves as a major hub for domestic and international flights. It is well-equipped with facilities and offers ground transportation options such as railways and buses to Sapporo. To reach the city from New Chitose Airport, travelers can take the JR train, which takes only 37 minutes to Sapporo Station.

Sapporo Station, a major railway station, is the central hub for JR Hokkaido's train services and is connected to the Subway Sapporo Station. It is a key point for accessing various parts of Hokkaido and offers numerous shopping and dining options. From Sapporo Station, visitors can easily travel to other regions, including Otaru and New Chitose Airport, making it an essential part of the city's transportation network.

Sapporo's subway system is a key component of the city's public transportation, offering a convenient and efficient way to navigate the urban area. The Sapporo Municipal Subway operates three lines: the Namboku Line, Tozai Line, and Toho Line, which connect at Odori Station and provide access to various parts of the city, including major tourist destinations. The subway is particularly advantageous for sightseeing, as it is less affected by snow compared to above-ground transportation.

The streetcar, or tram, in Sapporo offers a unique travel experience, especially in the southwestern part of the city where the subway does not reach.

Bike-sharing is another popular mode of local transportation in Sapporo, with services like "Porocle" providing easy access to bicycles for both tourists and locals.

Sapporo travel guide and discussion

Seafood-led dining: Many visitors center Sapporo trips on seafood—crab kaiseki at Sapporo Kani Honke near Sapporo Station and value conveyor sushi at Nemuro Hanamaru (JR Tower Stellar Place) are repeatedly praised for freshness and variety. Portions tend to be generous with seasonal rotations, and typical spends range from roughly JPY 2,000–3,000 for conveyor sushi to about JPY 10,000–11,500 for multi-course crab sets. Stay and stroll in Susukino: The Susukino–Tanukikoji corridor is often chosen for walkable late‑night food, shopping and subway access, making it an easy base for first‑timers. Examples cited include Vessel Hotel Campana Susukino (onsen and a standout seafood‑forward breakfast) and THE GATE HOTEL Sapporo by HULIC (new build with station‑facing views). Summer timing that pays off: Sapporo is frequently recommended for cool, low‑humidity summers, and July adds lavender into the mix—Hill of the Buddha offers a serene, design‑driven visit that becomes especially photogenic when the surrounding fields bloom, while Horomi Pass Lavender Garden pairs city views with purple slopes. Travelers suggest mornings or near sunset for softer light and fewer crowds; July is commonly mentioned as the peak window. Queues and reservations: Lines are common at hotspots, so many advise reserving crab dinners ahead, taking a number ticket and monitoring the queue at Nemuro Hanamaru, and hitting Nijo Market’s Donburi Chaya early (often before 10:00). Popular local sushi like Toriton can stop same‑day intake at peak hours, and Susukino all‑you‑can‑eat spots likewise recommend booking.

It's not just a hardcore ski resort, nor is it just a resort for photo ops—it really nails the balance of fun for kids, easy for beginners to learn, great for experts, and never boring for non-skiers. First, the verdict on skiing: there are 29 ski runs in total, covering beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. For a dabbler like me, I can practice my snowplow on the wide, gentle slopes during the day without anyone rushing me if I fall. Families with kids don't need to worry either; there are children's lessons for ages 3 and up, plus magic carpets, a sledding park, and family-friendly ski runs, so parents can actually sneak away for a few runs. Experts, don't worry about it being too easy—above the Tower Express, there are red and black runs. In the expert-only powder zones, you'll get that authentic deep snow, tree runs, and un-groomed terrain experience. Hokkaido powder isn't famous for nothing. A day without skiing is even more comfortable: Take the Unkai Gondola up to the Frost Tree Terrace (1,088m above sea level). With frost-covered branches and the snow-white Hidaka Mountains, it's truly freezing, but after ordering a Frosted Tree Coffee and a cloud soft-serve ice cream at KUMO Cafe, you'll feel like the trip was worth it despite the wind. Don't miss the Ice Village at night. With an ice bar, ice slides, and an ice church, it feels like stepping into a fairy tale set in sub-zero temperatures. Back at the hotel, soak in the Minamina-no-Yu public bath, or head to the Mina-Mina Beach to watch kids surfing in their swimsuits—it's magical to have a blizzard outside while it's 30°C inside. As for accommodation, it boils down to two feelings: The Tower is convenient with ski-in/ski-out access; RISONARE has spacious suites with bathtubs and saunas, making it more relaxing for couples or family vacations. There are 20+ restaurants, so you can blindly pick from soup curry, Wagyu yakiniku, or seafood buffets without having to eat convenience store rice balls every day. Honestly: TOMAMU isn't the wildest powder paradise, but it is the most foolproof answer for a Hokkaido winter vacation. Whether you're bringing your parents, kids, friends who don't ski, or you just want to ski and lounge around, choosing this place is a safe bet.

A first-timer's perspective on Hoshino TOMAMU: You don't have to be a ski pro to have a blast I skipped the crowds in Sapporo this time in Hokkaido and stayed directly at Hoshino TOMAMU Resort. Let me start with the conclusion: it's totally worth it even if you don't ski. During the day, I took the Unkai Gondola up to the Frost Tree Terrace (elevation 1,088m). The branches were covered in ice crystals; on a clear day, it feels like walking into a crystal forest. I ordered a frost-themed hot chocolate at KUMO Cafe. It was windy, but not crowded, and every photo I took on my phone looked like a wallpaper. You don't need to ski to visit the Frost Tree Terrace—it's friendly for both seniors and children. I didn't touch the snow until the afternoon. The TOMAMU ski area has 29 runs in total: 10 beginner, 14 intermediate, 4 advanced, and 1 for young children, so kids, beginners, and experts are all well-separated. Someone like me, who has even put ski boots on backward, was able to slide down the slopes after just two hours with a Chinese-speaking instructor. The longest run is 4,200m, and the powder snow is as soft as sugar—it doesn't even hurt when you fall. In the evening, I returned to the resort to soak in the Kirin no Yu open-air bath while snow fell outside, then went to the Ice Village to touch the ice bar. Staying here, I realized that skiing is just one part of it; the frost trees, hot springs, Ice Village, and indoor beach are the most comfortable way to experience winter for those who don't want to rush around.

Hokkaido in winter possesses a unique magic that beckons you to explore it firsthand. 🤍 Here is a complete 7-day, 6-night Hokkaido itinerary traveling via JR, subway, and bus. By using Sapporo as your home base for the entire trip, you won't have to deal with the hassle of switching hotels. 📍 DAY 1 | Welcome to Snowy Sapporo ✈️ Travel from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo via the JR Rapid Airport train. After checking into your hotel, head out to experience the vibrant winter atmosphere and neon lights of the Susukino district. 📍 DAY 2 | Discover Sapporo 🗼 Tour the city's iconic landmarks, starting with the Sapporo TV Tower and Odori Park. Visit the Hokkaido Shrine, nestled in a serene natural setting, and finish the day with some shopping at Tanukikoji. 📍 DAY 3 | Noboribetsu: Valley of Steam ♨️ Take a day trip to the hot spring town of Noboribetsu. Witness the dramatic Jigokudani (Hell Valley), where steam billows from the earth against a backdrop of volcanic terrain and pristine white snow. 📍 DAY 4 | Sweet Sapporo Day 🍪 Visit Shiroi Koibito Park, a famous chocolate factory and theme park featuring charming European-style architecture. Later, stop by the Sapporo Beer Museum to see the historic red-brick buildings and explore the exhibits. 📍 DAY 5 | Jozankei Winter Escape 🌨️ Experience the tranquility of the Jozankei valley. Walk through the hot spring town and cross the iconic red Futamitsuri Bridge amidst the falling snow. An alternative option is the Hill of the Buddha and the Moai statues at Makomanai Takino Cemetery, both of which feature stunning modern architecture. ⚠️ Note: If you are relying on public transport, it is best to choose either Jozankei or the Hill of the Buddha, as connecting between the two can be difficult. 📍 DAY 6 | Asari & Otaru — The Sea & Snow Journey 🚆🌊 This is the day you'll want your camera ready! Take the JR train to Asari Station, a picturesque little stop right by the sea, before continuing to Otaru, Hokkaido's most romantic town. 🎼 Otaru Music Box Museum — A treasure trove of musical wonders. 🍰 LeTAO — Taste their world-famous cheesecake. 🏘️ Sakaimachi Street — Stroll through the historic merchant street. 🌉 Otaru Canal — Enjoy the magical view of the canal lit up in the evening. 📍 DAY 7 | Goodbye, Hokkaido ✈️ Soak in the last of the Sapporo vibes, pick up some souvenirs, and take the JR Rapid Airport train back to New Chitose Airport, carrying home wonderful winter memories. 🏨 Where to stay? I recommend staying near Sapporo Station if you plan on taking frequent JR trips to other towns. Alternatively, stay in the Odori area if you prefer being in the heart of the city with easy access to the subway. 🚆 Is it hard to travel solo? Not at all for the main routes. However, you should plan your bus schedules carefully for out-of-town spots like Jozankei or the Hill of the Buddha. Always check train schedules and weather conditions, as winter weather can cause delays. ❄️ What to prepare Bring heavy winter coats, shoes with good grip for snow, gloves, and a hat. Be sure to allow extra travel time on heavy snow days in case of transport delays. ✨ Sometimes the best memories of a journey aren't the final destinations, but the views you see through the train window along the way. Hokkaido in winter... is a place you'll definitely want to experience more than once. 🤍 📌 Save this plan for your next Hokkaido adventure. 💬 If you could visit Hokkaido in winter, would you rather see the seaside train at Asari or walk along the Otaru Canal in the snow? Shiroi Koibito Park

Spend a sweet afternoon at Sapporo's Shiroi Koibito (White Lover) restaurant. Listen to chocolate stories, play interactive games, watch how chocolate cookies are made, and most interestingly, try your hand at painting a giant cookie! At 5:00 PM, the magical clock tower puppet show and dreamy bubble performance take place in the enchanting fairytale garden. The European-style castle is incredibly romantic under the autumn sunset, creating a truly Halloween atmosphere. We highly recommend taking some photos with the pumpkins!
