Show More ReviewsWe took a sightseeing bus from the scenic area entrance to the dam, then started hiking. Afterwards, we took a speedboat back to the dam, climbed 1200 steps to the Great Wall, but were too tired to continue and instead hiked back down the same way to the scenic area entrance. Overall, the hike in the scenic area isn't too difficult. It's about 6 kilometers from the dam to the innermost part, with no particularly difficult sections, although some parts are quite steep. However, there are a few things to note: First, there's no need to take the sightseeing bus; it doesn't take long to walk from the entrance to the dam. Second, there's no lakeside trail in this scenic area; once you reach the end, you either have to return the same way or take a speedboat. Staff will remind you whether you want to continue further. Third, the Heavenly Staircase hiking trail is indeed very physically demanding; consider carefully before attempting it.
