Bucharest Metropolitan Circus (Circul Globus)

Aerial feats in a purpose-built circus

A striking building, of course circular, at the edge of the city park that bears its name and near Stefan cel Mare metro, but with some street parking on Aleea Circului. Its capacity is ca 1800, and it has reasonable facilities in terms of snack stalls and clean toilets. A group of 7 of us, mainly 18-25 years old, but also two aged 55-70 went to see the Aerofonik performance (60 RON (€12) for adults, 30 RON (€6) for all concessions). Interspersed by musical clowning, this was a show of acrobats, jugglers and dancers, interpreting various music styles and performing some remarkable aerial feats (without a safety net). Happily, the only animals in this circus were two individual horses, which performed some steps not unlike dressage and one hopes were used to the very loud music. The performance itself was very impressive and the venue well suited to this type of show - with all seats close enough to the action to be really gripped by what one was seeing. Though circuses are now generally out of fashion, thankfully at least as far as performing animals are concerned, this was a beautiful and entertaining evening in a well-designed venue. Much of the audience was under 15 years old, and they had a great time.
