It was founded in １４８９ It is a temple of the Tendai sect Shinmori school, which is said to have started in １４８９ when Sadakage Asakura ordered his vassals to invite the Shinmori Shonin of Saikyoji Temple to open the mountain in Okaho Village, Fukui City. Katsuie Shibata built Kitanosho Castle and was moved from Okaho Village to the current location, which is the castle in １５７６. It is said that he entrusted the future of three sisters to the priest before he died in Kitanoshojo. There are tombs of Katsuie and the city in the precincts. There is also the Shibata Katsuie Museum, but advance reservations are required.
