Centered around Taihuai Town, there stand five peaks to the east, west, south, north, and center, rising above the clouds, with no trees on their summits, resembling earthen platforms, hence named Wutai, or 'Five Terraces'. The highest peak, North Terrace's Yedou Peak, reaches an altitude of 3,058 meters and is known as the 'Roof of North China'.

After all, during the real peak season, you have to queue up several times just to get in. After coming to Mount Wutai, my biggest question was how these temples were built on the mountains, some even on the mountain tops. This time at Mount Wutai, I started descending from the "Bodhisattva Summit" and visited several temples along the way, including "Xiantong Temple", "Tayuan Temple", "Wuye Temple", and "Shuxiang Temple". Each temple had more visitors than the last. Most people choose to walk from the bottom up, but I suggest walking from the top down might be better, as there are indeed many steps to walk down. Coming here, in addition to seeing various temples, the mountain scenery is really beautiful. One cannot help but marvel at the natural wonders. Moreover, there's still some unmelted snow on some of the mountain tops, a place where the vitality of people and nature merge.

The average summer temperature is 13.7°C, and the average winter temperature is -10.7°C, which is a stark contrast to the weather in Beijing, hence it is also known as the Cool Mountain. ⛰️The highest peak, North Terrace Ye Dou Peak, has an elevation of 3058 meters and is known as the 'Roof of North China,' with an average elevation of over 1000 meters. 🙃The White Pagoda of Tayuan Temple is currently under renovation, and not seeing the White Pagoda feels like something is missing. 🌅Watching the sunrise from the East Terrace should also be on the travel list. The Guanghua Temple originally had a night view, but it is temporarily closed due to special circumstances. Mount Wutai is the bodhimanda of Manjushri and is the only Buddhist sanctuary in China where temples of the Gelug (Yellow) and Sakya (Blue) schools of Tibetan Buddhism shine together. The scenic area is quite large, and it takes at least two days to visit properly. When I went, it was the off-season, so there was no need to queue for worship. Mount Wutai is located in the northeast of Shanxi Province, at the northern end of the Taihang Mountain range, and is composed of a series of large mountains and peaks. As one of China's four major Buddhist holy sites, Mount Wutai not only has ancient temples and pagodas, as well as the inherent scenery of Buddhism with incense smoke curling upwards, but also boasts five flat and broad mountaintops that reach high into the sky. The elevation of each of the five peaks is around 3,000 meters above sea level. The construction of temples began as early as during the reign of Emperor Wen of Sui. The positions of the five mountaintops resemble the upward-facing palm of a right hand with fingers closed together, each finger representing one of the mountaintops. The five peaks of Mount Wutai are surrounded by the East Peak (Wanghai Peak), West Peak (Guayue Peak), South Peak (Jinxiu Peak), North Peak (Yedou Peak), and Central Peak (Cuiyan Peak), respectively. Xiantong Temple: The ancestral temple of Mount Wutai, also the highest-status and largest Buddhist temple on the mountain, dating back over 2000 years. It houses the rare pillarless and beamless Wuliang Hall. Bodhisattva Top: The leading Yellow Temple of Mount Wutai, a royal temple. These temples are very close to each other, all within the temple cluster. There are also slightly more distant temples like Longquan Temple that are well worth a visit. If it's your first time visiting Mount Wutai, you can prioritize the temple cluster and the Small Dachao Platform. The Great Dachao Platform requires more time and is quite a test of physical strength. 💚Mount Wutai is truly worth a visit, each temple has its own history, and the architectural styles are all different and fascinating. Those with some knowledge of Buddhism should be able to see many stories. As for someone like me who easily forgets even after listening to explanations, it's still very worthwhile to worship purely, with sincerity being the main focus. With an endless stream of tourists and study groups, Nanchan Temple and Foguang Temple at the southern foot of Mount Wutai have become pilgrimage sites, simply because they house the two oldest wooden structures from the Tang Dynasty in China. The photos may seem ordinary, but they exude a simple and grand atmosphere, showcasing the distinctive style of Tang Dynasty architecture! Nanchan Temple: The Great Buddha Hall was built in the third year of the Tang Dynasty's Jianzhong era (AD 782), making it over 1200 years old and the oldest existing wooden structure from the Tang Dynasty in China. It is also one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Although small in scale, the Great Buddha Hall is exquisitely crafted, with a simple technique that embodies the grand and minimalist artistic style of the Tang Dynasty. The temple houses 17 exquisite Tang Dynasty colored sculptures, which are considered treasures of Tang Dynasty sculpture art (photography is prohibited, and two Bodhisattva statues in front of the Great Buddha have been stolen). Foguang Temple: The temple's main hall, the East Great Hall, was completed in the eleventh year of the Tang Dynasty's Dazhong era (AD 857). In terms of construction date, it ranks third after the Nanchan Temple's main hall in Wutai County and the Guangrenwang Temple in Ruicheng County (AD 831) among the existing wooden structures in China, making it the most complete and largest of the existing Tang Dynasty wooden buildings. Foguang Temple's Tang Dynasty architecture, sculptures, murals, and inscriptions are all of high historical and artistic value, earning it the nickname 'The Four Excellences'. Tips: Gain knowledge - Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, and Foguang Temple Not far from Nanchan Temple, Foguang Temple became world-famous because of Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, turning it into a holy site for lovers of ancient architecture, paying tribute to the two masters. The discovery of Foguang Temple's Tang Dynasty structures is credited to the famous Chinese scholar Mr. Liang Sicheng. While reading Paul Pelliot's 'Dunhuang Grottoes Catalogue', Mr. Liang noticed the depiction of the 'Great Buddha's Light Temple' in Cave 61 (see 'Architect Liang Sicheng' by Lin Zhu) and was inspired. To verify the hypothesis that 'there must still be Tang structures in domestic temples', he made a special trip to Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province in 1937 to search for treasures. Mr. Liang personally wrote a detailed, specific, and vivid account of the inspection process of Foguang Temple's Tang Dynasty structures. The main hall of Guangrenwang Temple in Ruicheng; built in the sixth year of the Tang Dynasty's Dahui era (AD 832), near Yongle Palace. 2. The Great Buddha Hall of Nanchan Temple in Wutai; the earliest existing Tang Dynasty wooden structure. Built in the third year of the Tang Dynasty's Jianzhong era (AD 782). 3. The East Great Hall of Foguang Temple in Wutai; constructed in the eleventh year of the Tang Dynasty's Dazhong era, which is AD 857. From the beams to the doors and windows, it has been well-preserved for over a thousand years. Half: Tiantai An in Pingshun, Shanxi; its main wooden structure is from the late Tang Dynasty, specifically the fourth year of Tianyou (AD 907). Half: The bell tower inside Kaiyuan Temple in Zhengding, Hebei; its lower level is still the original Tang Dynasty structure, which is very precious.
