1. Located on the east side of Cairo, it is closer to the Great Bazaar of Khalifa; 2. From the time of Khalifa, it was a cemetery and mausoleum. Because the mourners in Egyptian tradition needed to keep their spirits for forty days, the buildings here have certain functions suitable for living people to live in; 3. Since the 1950s, some people gradually moved into the mausoleum to live in, and later more people built formal houses here, the City of the Dead gradually became a city. Community structure, schools, clinics and power supply facilities have also begun to provide services in this area; 4. According to my field observations, there are not many residents left to live now, and maybe everything here will become history in the near future; 5. Free visits, but for safety reasons, try not to visit at night.
Cairo is a very magical place, where graves are not built underground, but on the ground. Egypt has a large area, all private places, there are also rooms, squares, churches and ordinary communities, no difference, but there are no windows. Even when sunny days pass here, there will be an inexplicable gloom, which is the famous city of Cairo's dead.
When I heard of such a place after I came to Egypt, I was curious to go and see it. Later, it was discovered that this was the cemetery of the rich. After their death, their families built the same house for them. But strangely, there are dead people buried underground and living people living on the ground. But there is no conflict between the two. The living live live here and give birth to a new life. The dead sleep quietly beside them, just like the reincarnation of life. Most of the people living here are poor people. There are gravekeepers, homeless people and vagrants. To this end, the Egyptian government provides water, electricity, ventilation and free use for residents of the "City of the Dead". At present, there are about one million poor people living in it. No wonder I feel like walking in a Mumbai slum. Some people say it's not safe here. But it's a good turn to come down. Poverty can make people evil or kind. Richness is the same. Looking at them, I don't think we should complain about life.
It's not just the dead, it's also a lot of poor people who have nowhere to live. The city of the dead has become Cairo's most famous slum because of its special living inhabitants. The cemetery in the "City of the Dead" was built according to the style of folk houses. It is known that the wealthy people in early Cairo began to build cemeteries here, and also built simple dwellings for the gravekeepers to live in.
Egypt has a population of 80 million and 30 million live in Cairo. You can imagine how crowded Cairo will be. On the one hand, the city occupies the fertile fields without restriction. On the other hand, the population density of the old urban area is very high, and even the living occupy the space of the dead to live in the cemetery cemetery.
In fact, the city of the dead is the cemetery of the rich. There are about three kinds of people living in it. One is unable to buy housing, the other is unable to buy real estate in the city, and the other is a cemetery in Cairo.
No tickets are needed. There are some graves inside, most of which are classified by family. Unlike the cemeteries in China, there are some local people living in the cemeteries. I'm still a little scared to come here.
Must group action oh, after all, this is a slum, the original cemetery building was occupied by the poor, converted the cemetery, but also quite nervous atmosphere oh, dare not stay more, see and go.
The city of the dead is actually a cemetery complex. In Cairo, there is a slum where the dead are buried. Interestingly, there are houses on the ground for the living. It is a strange place.
The dead are buried in the ground, but there are more than one million living people on the ground. Underground people are mostly dignitaries, but people on the ground are civilians. The private city of Cairo is a microcosm of the lower classes of society, because there are more tombs here than the broken houses of the grave watchers.
