Zhaohua Ancient Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Zhaojue Ancient City—a sediment of Shu Kingdom's historical culture
A 2200-year-old ancient city quietly awaits my arrival.
Ancient Han city walls, Jiameng Pass, Qinglin Gate, Zhanfeng Gate, Confucian Temple, County Government Office, Examination Halls, and Jinghou Temple ruins bear witness to the extraordinary history of this ancient city in Bashu.
Walking slowly on the wet bluestone streets after the rain, I am intoxicated by the unique charm of this ancient city on the banks of the Jialing River, a key route between Qin and Shu.

Day2: Zhaohua Ancient City——Gaomiaopu——Wangfu Bridge——Return trip (hiking on the ancient Shu road)
🌟Attractions recommendation:
❣️Zhaohua Ancient City:
The only well-preserved ancient city from the Three Kingdoms period in China, suitable for a leisurely stroll. Walking along the stone-paved road, wandering through the five streets and four alleys, you can feel the tranquility and peace deep in the lanes. The residents in the ancient city are all locals, each of them is very simple and kind. In talking with them, you can feel their goodwill.
🏡Gu Family Courtyard:
There are many homestays in the ancient city. If you want to stay somewhere with special characteristics, it is recommended to stay at the Gu Family Courtyard. With a history of more than 400 years from the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is a scenic spot in itself. Even if you don't stay here, you can come in for a free visit. There are many green plants inside, and stepping into the courtyard, you will feel the serenity of the years.
👏Jiameng Spring and Autumn:
If you want to watch the Jiameng Spring and Autumn performance, it depends on fate, usually only on weekends, but during holidays, they will also perform. I really love the feeling of sitting on the boat and interacting with the performers at the end, this is highly recommended.
🍃Hiking on the ancient Shu road:
Starting from Gaomiaopu, Gaomiaopu—Jiajian Shop—Songning Bridge—Wangfu Bridge, the whole journey is about 2.2 kilometers, which takes about 50 minutes. It is suitable for light hiking, feeling the ancient cypresses along the way, and enjoying the hidden realm of nature.
👀Specialty recommendation:
If you want to take some specialties, remember to buy some Taishou Mahua (crispy twisted dough sticks) in the ancient city, which are crispy and crunchy. The prices in the ancient city are very people-friendly, I really love it.
🚗Transportation:
It is recommended to drive by yourself, navigate to 📍Zhaohua Ancient City
🚄High-speed train: Chengdu-Guangyuan (about 2.5 hours), then take a taxi or public transportation.
Travel against the tide during the May Day holiday

Unstoppable and unforgettable 10 minutes life time experience and fun-filled moments. After about four months of ESL teaching in Jiange before I realized that such a beautiful and monumental place exist.
Jianmen Pass is a mountain pass located southwest of the city of Guangyuan in Sichuan province.
It's located in Jiange County which is a few distance from my apartment.
It's famous for the beauty of its steep slopes and it's strategic importance in ancient times.
As the traditional Chinese saying goes, "If one man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable to get through".
I had real fun with couple of friends at different outings.

Jianmenguan, located in Jiange County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, is the most treacherous section of the Shu Road and has always been a strategic military location. Tangjia River Nature Reserve Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
For sisters who don't know where to go for the May Day holiday, big data has a recommendation
Last weekend, I went to Guangyuan with friends and stumbled upon this great place for a trip.
📍Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
A 3-hour drive from Chengdu by car🚗
The whole area is full of Cercis chinensis flowers, and it's just the kind that makes you feel like taking great photos!!
There are also azaleas and pear blossoms blooming in competition.
Looking at this beautiful sea of flowers, I suddenly remembered a line of poetry, 'When the mountain flowers are in full bloom, she laughs amongst them,' which couldn't be more fitting for this scene.
_
Here you can also see giant pandas, golden monkeys, antelopes, and other nationally protected wildlife🦒.
_
📍Qingxi Ancient Town
About 10 kilometers from Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, after enjoying the flowers, you can come here to eat and rest, stroll through the ancient town, feel the historical traces of the ancient city walls, and overlook the entire ancient town's night view at night. It's suggested to bring a set of Hanfu for the trip, as taking photos in traditional costumes is super photogenic

Treasure Attraction - Tangjiahe
I haven't truly felt nature in a long time, until I came to Tangjiahe...
My foreign teacher Jack told me how wonderful Tangjiahe is, and I was surprised. Only then did I realize that Tangjiahe is so yearned for by international friends, and I, as a Sichuan girl, had yet to know about it.
Out of curiosity, I chose Guangyuan-Qingchuan as the destination for this spring outing.
Chengdu to Guangyuan Qingchuan, a high-speed train takes only one and a half hours. Upon arriving in Qingchuan, I rented a car and continued driving into the mountains.
First, I arrived at Qingxi Ancient Town, where the scenic area's guide said that this was already the entrance to the Tangjiahe tourist area.
First stop: Qingxi Ancient Town
The special thing about this place is:
The Yamen - The Yamen really surprised me. It turns out that the public hall is in the front, followed by the backyard of the county master's office, and then the back courtyard of the county officials. While visiting here, I couldn't help but exclaim, haha, it turns out that I didn't understand the historical dramas.
The City Wall - Walking on the city wall, you can overlook the entire town, and it seems as if the prosperity of the years and history has re-emerged before my eyes. It is said that during holidays, there will be patrolling soldiers here, allowing everyone to more vividly feel the majesty of guarding the city walls in the past.
The Tea Horse Road - This museum is right below the city wall and was a resting place for merchants in the past.
The Mosque - It's worth mentioning that next to this ancient city wall, there is a mosque with an exotic design that is particularly eye-catching and well-preserved, and it is still in use today. Therefore, in Qingxi Ancient Town, seeing such a fusion of ancient architecture and ethnic architecture makes the integration of the villagers here even stronger.
I stayed quietly in the ancient town for one night, and the next day I went to Tangjiahe.
Second stop: Tangjiahe
It was this trip to Tangjiahe that gave me a sense of relaxation and the inevitable thought of bringing my family here again.
Entering the scenic area of Tangjiahe, you cannot carry fireworks, which gives a strong sense of ceremony. The sightseeing car drove along, and the guide said that if we were lucky, we might encounter wild animals. I just took it as a casual remark.
But when I saw the twist-horned antelope, I was instantly excited because, you know, this is not an animal you see in a zoo, this creature is very unfamiliar to you, with a very peculiar appearance. In its demeanor, you don't see panic, nor pleading, nor fear, but the equality of life. Suddenly, I understood why the slogan of Tangjiahe is: Tangjiahe - the world as it originally was.
Afterward, we saw many small animals, including monkeys🐒, raccoons🦝, deer, birds whose names I knew and didn't know, and the palette of spring waved before my eyes. Passing through the Cercis Valley, there was a bit more romance here. Clusters of pink and purple made the entire valley seem like it was in a sweet romance. Along the way, I also met a few girls in Hanfu, with their clothes fluttering elegantly, blending into the sea of Cercis flowers, which was very beautiful.
This trip was a complete relaxation that came from a journey immersed in nature. Tangjiahe, this treasure of a place, is indeed worth revisiting.

【Chengdu Outskirts】Explore the Pristine: A Natural Journey to Guangyuan Tangjiahe
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and delve into the mysteries of nature. Just a 4-hour drive from Chengdu, you can reach this little-known ecological haven—Guangyuan Tangjiahe.
This is one of the best places in China to observe wildlife, with rare animals such as giant pandas, takins, and golden monkeys growing freely. The water is crystal clear, and the drifting experience is known as 'swimming in mineral water,' making it an excellent choice for summer cooling.
In spring, the area becomes a sea of flowers. The mountains are covered with blooming bauhinia, azaleas, and pear flowers, turning the entire range into a romantic shade of pink. Step into the Tangjiahe Nature Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the land's nature and history.
The recommended itinerary is two days and one night, with accommodation in Qingxi Ancient Town. This Ming Dynasty ancient city, forgotten by time, retains a strong sense of daily life and the simple architectural style of the old Tangjiahe Nature Reserve. With affordable prices, it is an excellent place to experience the authentic North Sichuan atmosphere. The night in the ancient town has its unique charm; wearing Hanfu, it's as if you've traveled back to the Ming Dynasty.
Inside the Tea Horse Road Museum, savor a cup of tea and enjoy the tranquil ancient town night.
This spring, let us step into Guangyuan Tangjiahe and feel the charm of nature, experiencing a different kind of niche travel.

Guangyuan is the only city in the country with a Daughter's Festival, the birthplace of the empress

Without having been here, one would never know the high regard in which great figures and Song Qingling hold Wu Zetian.
Wu Zetian's true likeness stone carving statue
The true likeness stone carving statue of Wu Zetian enshrined in the Zetian Hall is said to be an image of her in her later years, wearing a treasure crown and dressed as a 'Bhikkhuni' (main picture, 4th emoji).
Guangyuan is the northernmost city in Sichuan, with many places having extremely dangerous terrain. The difficulty of the Shu Road, as described by the great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, says it all.
🎫Ticket: 50💰 for adults, discounts available for students
⏰Opening hours: 8.00-18.00
📍Address: Navigate to 'Huangze Temple Scenic Area' (near Qianfo Cliff and the train station)
🔥【How to enjoy Guangyuan city area?】

Afternoon:
Route 1⃣ Huangze Temple — Qianfo Cliff:
Huangze Temple is the only temple in China dedicated to Empress Wu Zetian. Pray in the temple and feel the charm of the empress.
Qianfo Cliff is the largest grotto group in Sichuan Province. Experience the wash of Chinese grotto culture on the cliffside.
(You can go to Huangze Temple earlier in the morning and take a bus or drive to Qianfo Cliff in the afternoon)
Route 2⃣ Fenghuang Tower (Dongshan Park):
Climb Fenghuang Tower to overlook the entire Guangyuan cityscape, enjoy a cup of Ba Ba tea at the tower, and savor the afternoon; or relive childhood joy in the park.
Evening Iron Bridge: Check-in for photos
Guangyuan Covered Bridge (by the Jialing River): Photo-taking + river breeze + post-dinner walk + river cruise
🔥Attractions around Guangyuan, Jiange: Jianmen Pass/Cuiyun Corridor
You can spend an entire day here because you will climb the Shu Road, which is as difficult as ascending to heaven, walk the bird path hanging on the cliffside, and climb the thrilling and exciting Ape Rubbing Path. After a day, your legs will be weak!
Here, you can find 365 days of excellent air quality, Ba Ba tea everywhere, and people strolling by the river after meals. The character 'leisure' is evident everywhere. Although the city seems small and leisurely, very suitable for retirement, its touristic nature should not be underestimated.

Qianfo Cliff: A Historical Treasure and Natural Beauty of Sichuan
📍Location: Qianfo Cliff, Lizhou District, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province
🚗Travel: Recommended to drive or take the bus
🈺️Opening Hours: 8:30-17:30
🎫Ticket Price: 💰50 yuan (Winter discount event, with a chance to purchase tickets for 1 yuan)
Attraction Introduction: Guangyuan Qianfo Cliff, located on the left bank of the Jialing River, is an important part of the Jianmen Shu Road National Scenic Area. The cliff carvings are distributed along a 420-meter-long cliff, reaching up to 84 meters in height, with the highest niche being 45.5 meters above the ground. There are a total of 13 layers, with more than 950 niches and over 7,900 Buddha statues.
These carvings began in the Northern Wei Dynasty and flourished from the Northern Dynasties to the Tang Dynasty, especially during the Tang Dynasty. During the Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, and Qing periods, the focus was mainly on coloring. It is the largest grotto group in Sichuan and is known as the 'Exhibition Hall of Stone Carving Art through the Ages'.
In 1935, due to the construction of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Highway, some carvings were damaged. In 1961, the Qianfo Cliff carvings were listed as one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In 2012, it was rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
Little Knowledge Share: The Tang Dynasty cliff carvings of Guangyuan Qianfo Cliff have the following characteristics:
✅One Buddha, two Bodhisattvas, two disciples: The main shapes are pointed arch and round arch, and the carvings are simple yet exquisite. The Buddha statues often have square or round faces, with a solemn and amiable expression, three neck folds, broad shoulders, and a robust, rounded figure.
✅Clothing and attire: Most wear a kasaya that covers both shoulders. This style of clothing appeared in small quantities during the Tang Dynasty's Zhenguan period, became popular during Empress Wu's reign, and after the Kaiyuan period, it became the only form of Buddha attire.
✅Plump and rounded: The 'open face' of Buddha statues is a characteristic of Buddhist carvings after the prosperous Tang period, with high spiral hair buns and a plump, full face.
✅Artistic techniques: The grotto carvings are mainly high-relief, with some niches using through-carving and hollowing techniques, giving the statues a more three-dimensional feel.
When visiting cultural attractions, in addition to taking photos and checking in, it is more important to understand the historical stories behind them, to feel the wisdom of the ancients, and to broaden one's horizons and ways of thinking.
The spectacular sight of Qianfo Cliff makes one admire the wisdom of the ancients; after a thousand years of weathering, many carvings have become unrecognizable, and some have even been destroyed, which is deeply moving.
Cherish the present, feel the history.

Huangze Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The imperial grace is vast, extending to the hometown—Huangze Temple in Guangyuan, Sichuan
To commemorate her birthplace and mother, Empress Wu Zetian specially ordered the construction of a stone sculpture of her true likeness within Huangze Temple, which is currently the only stone sculpture of Empress Wu's true likeness in the world. Huangze Temple does not have the traditional Buddhist temple's 'Mahavira Hall', but instead has the 'Zetian Hall' as its main hall. In the statue, Wu Zetian wears a tall and precious crown, sits in a lotus position, and forms the Dhyana mudra with her hands in front of her abdomen, solemn and sacred.

Visit Huangze Temple to see the true likeness of Empress Wu Zetian
🫅🏻After Wu Zetian ascended to the throne, she favored Buddhism over Taoism, using it to suppress the Li royal family who claimed descent from Laozi. Against this backdrop, a nationwide trend emerged to build temples and carve Buddha statues on a grand scale. 🗿
This was especially true in Wu Zetian's hometown of Guangyuan, where an image of the empress was carved and enshrined in Huangze Temple. Since it was modeled after Wu Zetian post-coronation, the statue resembles an old lady, which is probably the closest representation of the real Wu Zetian.
In addition to this, Huangze Temple also preserves more than 50 grottoes and over 1,000 stone carvings.
The Great Buddha Grotto carved during the Tang Dynasty is the best preserved, with a full and well-arranged layout of figures that are relaxed in posture. In the center stands a 5.8-meter-tall statue of Amitabha, flanked by two disciples, two bodhisattvas, two vajra warriors, and two heavenly kings.

🔥【How to enjoy Guangyuan city area?】
Morning:
You must try a bowl of cold noodles in the morning, which can only be made with the water from the Jialing River in Guangyuan❗️ Although the word 'cold' is in its name, it is actually served hot. There are many delicious and affordable foods.
