The Temple of Literature was built in 1070 at the time of Emperor Ly Thanh Tong, it is one of the several temples in Vietnam which is dedicated to Confucius, sages and scholars. The temple is located in the south of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long at 58 Quoc Tu Giam, Van Mieu, Dong Ha, and is open daily from 0800-1700. It is about 3 kilometers west of Hoan Kiem Lake. It covers an area of 54000 square meters including the Van lake, Giam Park and five courtyards which are surrounded by an ancient brick wall. The complex offers a rich and diverse look into the history and culture of Vietnam since the 10th century.

The Temple of Literature in Hanoi is a typical Chinese-style architectural complex, consisting of five courtyards. Outside the main gate of the Temple of Literature stands a 'dismounting stele', indicating that even the highest-ranking individuals should dismount and walk inside. The words 'Temple of Literature Gate' are prominently and solemnly displayed above the center of the main gate. On both the east and west sides of the stele courtyard, 82 doctoral steles are neatly arranged, with 41 on each side. Each stele is carried by a vividly carved stone turtle, with the names of the scholars who passed the imperial examinations over the years inscribed on them. Therefore, there is a common saying in Vietnam to encourage diligence in study: 'The golden list on stone steles will last forever.' Hanging high in the center of the Great Hall is a Chinese plaque with the four characters 'Teacher of All Ages', indicating that it was 'written by Emperor Kangxi'. In the Old Quarter's City Walk, you must not miss the Hanoi Temple of Literature, which is only about a 20-minute walk from the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, and can be visited together. In 1070 AD, Emperor Ly Thanh Tong of the Ly Dynasty decided to build the Temple of Literature to the south of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long to worship Duke Zhou, Confucius, the Four Associates, and the 72 Sages, and also allowed the descendants of the royal family and nobility to study here. From the beginning, the Temple of Literature served as a national academy and was Vietnam's first higher education institution. It gradually expanded its enrollment to include the children of commoners.
