Having been born and raised in Henan, he had never been there and so was sceptical about the draw of these mountain carvings. I am now however glad to report that this was his favourite destination on our trip! Although the largest, most impressive Buddha carving was covered for repairs (it opened back up again a few days later! Grr!) my favourite part happened to be a small calve with over 5000 tiny carvings of the Buddha covering the walls. Many of the carvings were left headless from years of thievery which was an interesting fact to note. But now the statues are well protected and well worth the visit!HereComesTheSun1

Longmen Grottoes are chiselled by the mountains, with beautiful scenery, towering ancient trees and vivid stone statues. Yihe flows through Longmen to form the current Yihe Wetland Park. Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan on the West Mountain are also very interesting.
The Longmen faced off, and the Yihe came from the sky. Longmen Grottoes are one of the three major grotto statues, which is very shocking. After visiting the grottoes, you can also visit the Baiyuan to appreciate the Tang poetry romance left by the great poet Bai Juyi of the Tang Dynasty.
Longmen Grottoes (Tickets 90 yuan/person, ≥ 60 years old free, tickets are best to buy or make an appointment 3~5 days in advance), in the southern suburbs of Luoyang City, is one of the four most famous grottoes in China. There are many Buddha statues, and the Lushena Buddha is a prototype statue of Wu Zetian. Since the grottoes are chiselled along the river in the mountain wall, the road is basically straight.
