吐鲁番沙漠植物园隶属中国科学院新疆生物土壤沙漠研究所，是西北干旱荒漠区惟一的一个沙漠植物园，也是世界上最低的植物园。位于吐鲁番市东南约10公里，海拔-95-76米。园址坐落在吐鲁番盆地腹部的恰特喀勒、艾丁湖和亚尔乡三个乡之间约6000公顷的风蚀流沙区内，有大面积的风蚀雅丹地貌，平坦流动沙地及新月形沙丘地貌类型，被流沙湮埋的故城废墟及闻名于世的干旱地区地下水利工程坎儿井。这里是世界第二低地，素有“风库”、“火洲”之称。年平均8级以上大风日数为26.8天。最多达68天，最大风速超过40米/秒。风沙流动速度居全国之首；年平均积温为13.9度。极端最高气温47.62度，极端最低气温-28度，夏季沙面温度超过80度，年平均降水量16.4毫米，年蒸发量2837.8毫米；年平均湿度41％；年日照时数3049.5小时，日照百分比为68[%]；年总辐射量为139.5千卡/平方厘米。　　沙漠植物园建于1976年，占地34公顷，该园以固沙植物引种驯化和扩大繁殖为主，还兼沙害防治研究、沙漠植物普及教育、观赏旅游等功能。
