Airport Information

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

Singapore Changi Airport sits about 20 km from downtown and handles more than 60 million passengers a year across four terminals. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are connected by walkways and a free Skytrain, and Terminal 4 links to the rest of the airport by shuttle bus. If you have time before your flight, Jewel Changi sits beside Terminal 1, with the 40-metre Rain Vortex, the world's tallest indoor waterfall; most of Jewel is free to enter and stays open 24 hours. The MRT runs from about 5:30 AM to midnight.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU)

Chengdu is served by two airports, and Singapore Airlines' direct flight from Singapore currently arrives at Tianfu International Airport. Tianfu connects to the city centre by metro, airport bus, taxi and a high-speed rail link; the high-speed train runs to Chengdu East Station, the city's main hub for high-speed trains. Airport assignments can change, and several airlines moved their Chengdu international flights from Tianfu to Shuangliu in mid-2026, so check the airport shown on your ticket.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)

Shuangliu is the older of Chengdu's two airports and sits closer to the city centre. It is a good fit for families travelling with large luggage, since taxis offer one-to-one pick-up and drop-off. From Shuangliu, a taxi to the Chengdu Panda Base costs about ¥100-150 (~US$15-22) and takes around 40 minutes.

Visa and Entry

China offers two main visa-free pathways for eligible travellers. The 30-day unilateral visa waiver covers nationals of about 50 countries, letting them stay up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, conferences, sports competitions or study tours. As of March 2026, the eligible countries include the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Russia in Europe, Australia and New Zealand in Oceania, Japan, South Korea, Bahrain, Brunei, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia in Asia, and the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay in the Americas. Singapore citizens can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism and business.

The 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy applies at 60 ports across 24 provinces, including Chengdu. Nationals of 55 countries, including Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Indonesia, can transit for up to 10 days without a visa. Separately, almost all foreign travellers passing through China to a third country by plane, ship or train can stay visa-free for up to 24 hours without leaving the port of entry; leaving the port requires a temporary entry permit.

Whatever your nationality, a visa is still mandatory if your visit involves employment, study or long-term residence in China. Carry a valid ordinary passport with at least the length of your stay remaining, and at least 3 months of validity for the 240-hour transit, together with proof of your visa or waiver status, onward or return tickets and accommodation reservations.

Foreign nationals arriving in mainland China by air, land or sea must also submit the China Digital Arrival Card (CDAC) before passing through border control, even if they qualify for visa-free entry. You can complete the form up to 72 hours before arrival. Exemptions cover holders of a valid Chinese Permanent Resident ID card, passengers in direct 24-hour transit who stay inside the restricted transit area, cruise passengers who enter and leave on the same vessel, foreign crew members, group visa travellers and travellers using automated e-channels. The old customs health declaration form has been abolished; health screening now runs through standard immigration checks.

Customs and Currency

Cash limits apply at the border. The carry-on limit for Chinese yuan is RMB 20,000, and foreign currency of US$5,000 or more must be declared. Non-Chinese residents can bring personal items worth up to RMB 2,000 intended to stay in China duty-free; returning Chinese residents get a higher allowance of RMB 5,000. Alcohol is limited to 1,500ml and cigarettes to 400 sticks for adults. Commercial goods, unaccompanied baggage shipped separately, cultural relics, endangered species and precious metals are restricted or prohibited, and failing to declare them can lead to confiscation, fines or legal liability.

For money, exchange at Chinese banks for better rates than at the airport, and let your bank know before using a foreign card at an ATM. If you spend over ¥200 (~US$30) at a store showing a "Tax-Free" sign, keep the receipts and get the forms stamped at customs before you leave to claim a refund. Alipay and WeChat Pay are used for almost all payments in China, so link a foreign Visa or Mastercard before you land.
