Beijing Shanghai Train Advance Request 12306: How the 2026 Pilot Actually Works

China Railway has been implementing a reservation service on over 200 Beijing-Shanghai trains starting July 20, 2026. The passenger makes an application in the Railway 12306 application 60 to 17 days before the scheduled train. The railway will process the orders 20 to 16 days before the train’s departure date.

This is not the waitlist, and it is not an additional train for the train that’s sold out. This is just another way to access the same pool of tickets. Since this is a pilot program, be sure to review the terms of service within the app before you build your itinerary around it.

Most people require help when they are making a similar booking. Imagine you are making plans for a journey from the US to Beijing and Shanghai, and your preferred train has no availability. But then, in the corner of the screen, there is an option for "reservation."

These two distinct systems appear to be similar when making a booking. However, they operate on different timing systems. Selecting the incorrect one will waste time on your itinerary.

How this is different from the regular 12306 waitlist

Passenger train travelling through yellow rapeseed fields beneath overhead railway power lines

The real-time waitlist (候补, hòubǔ) is activated once the tickets are put up for sale. The advance request begins before that. In both cases, you can request a ticket that is not available instantly. This is where the similarity stops.

What are the two methods to book the train tickets?

Mechanism

How it functions

Submission deadline

Confirmation declaration

Real-time waitlist (候补)

This occurs when you enter the queue for a train or seat category without tickets. You pay upfront, and once more tickets become available because of cancellations or additional capacity, they fill your request and allot you a berth.

The date of the deadline is determined by the passenger and after the train tickets go on sale. The deadline cannot be set more than 20 minutes before departure.

At any time before your deadline. There is no specific date.

Beijing-Shanghai advance request (预约购票)

You will rank the trains available according to your preference. The train booking authority will match your request with a ticket before the regular sale opens to others. You pay for the ticket once the order is fulfilled.

60 to 17 days before departure

Every day between 20 and 16 days before the train departs. You pay for the ticket by 23:00 Beijing time on the confirmation date.

Regular purchase

You purchase the ticket directly.

Railway officials state that this pilot enables them to forecast demand on time and accordingly manage the capacity and ticket distribution.

How does the request-and-confirmation window work?

There are six steps involved:

  1. Launch the Railway 12306 app and locate the "Ticket Reservation" (预约购票) tab on the home page.
  2. Select your travel date falling between 60 and 17 days after today. Applications for booking tickets for 60 days are accepted every day from 8:00 Beijing time onwards.
  3. Select your trains or times. Choose your preferences.
  4. Confirm the application. There is no guarantee of receiving a ticket at this step.
  5. Wait for confirmation. Orders are processed every day from 20 to 16 days before your departure, and the result will be delivered via the app, WeChat, Alipay, and SMS.
  6. Make payment before 23:00 Beijing time on the confirmation day for the booking. An unpaid order will be automatically cancelled.

During steps 4 and 5, the rail company states that they weigh 12306 historical data points, the booking requests they receive, and their capacity. After analyzing that, they allocate capacity in a series of phases. Your allocation relies on the supply allocated by the rail company after seeing demand. No seat allocation takes place during the waiting time.

You should be mindful of the different time zones while booking. The 8:00 am Beijing time corresponds to 8:00 pm in New York the previous evening before daylight saving time ends on November 1. The deadline of 11:00 pm Beijing time for the payment becomes 10:00 am New York time once the clocks change. It should be considered a morning deadline.

Worked example: a December 20 departure

Different stages

Date

First day you can submit a request (day 60)

October 21

Last day you can submit a request (day 17)

December 3

Date range of order fulfillment and payment

November 30 to December 4

Regular ticket sales open

Around December 5 or 6

Take a look at the sequence. Fulfillment happens before the regular sales process starts. By the time it becomes "sold out" via the standard method, the booking period is over for that particular day.

Exact versus flexible requests

The app offers two methods of booking a ticket:

Method

What should you choose?

Recommended for

Exact reservation

Specific trains, timing of arrivals/departures, and classes of seats are fixed. This information is provided in the app in the form of current schedules and historical data.

Plans that are fixed. Example: meeting in Shanghai in the morning and a flight to catch after that

Flexible reservation

Times of departure and arrival may vary, the length of the journey and seat class are flexible

Flexible schedules that would allow you to catch multiple trains

The system also has some limits:

Limit

Unit/Note

Pending orders for each 12306 account

3

Number of choices per order

Up to 3 exact and 2 flexible, across 2 successive days

Passengers per order

Up to 19 on 12306 app

Groups exceeding 19 passengers

Train preferences

You must rank your choices

Changes to a submitted order

Not yet supported. Cancel and resubmit before fulfillment.

A good combination is two specific demands for the preferred trains and one flexible request for a broader time period to increase your probability of fulfillment.

Make sure your preferences are legitimate. If you rank a train that you are not likely to travel on but add it just to increase your options, it might come up as fulfilled later. You will have to make payments for the journey you did not choose. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to find another way to travel once the orders are processed.

What happens if you pay late or need a refund?

Advance request tickets have their own refund policy. It is different from that of standard tickets:

  • Refund 20 to 8 days before the date of travel: railway levies 5% of the ticket price.
  • Refund 8 days before the date of travel: prevailing policy on advance sale tickets will apply.
  • Changes: each advance sale ticket can be modified only once into another ticket during the advance-sale window.
  • Changes before the date of travel: you will be asked to pay the fare difference or refunded the difference after deducting a 5% fee for the changes.
  • Non-payment of orders: failure to pay a completed order three times within 30 days results in deactivation of the account from reservation service for 90 days. Cancellation of a completed order is deemed a cancelled booking.

Cancellation of a request before fulfillment is not subject to any penalties. Penalties are charged only when completed orders are cancelled.

Should you plan around it?

Apply for advance ticket requests only if your travel dates are confirmed, and you can make your move early. Any departure from Pudong Airport, a wedding, or a reservation at the museum in Shanghai can justify making your request on Day 60.

Do not apply it in case you have uncertain travel dates. The usual sales process and wait-listing will work in this case with less hassle. Regardless of anything, an advance request will always give you early visibility. But it is not a confirmed booking. Until you pay on the fulfillment date, you do not have a seat.

What to do when your preferred train is sold out?

High speed train moving through a tunnel with motion blur and illuminated railway tracks

Calculate how many days are left until your trip starts. This will determine which method you can go ahead with for booking.

A request will not help when the chosen day falls within the regular selling period. It is useful only in cases when you still have at least 17 days to start your travel or choose another date.

Decision flow for a sold-out train

  1. Calculate the number of days remaining until you start traveling.
  2. 60 to 17 days remaining: open the Ticket Reservation tab. If you see the preferred train on the list, make the reservation request. You should add another flexible request for a safer option.
  3. 16 days remaining: you cannot make any submissions. The regular ticket sales have not started yet. Set a reminder for the beginning of regular sales.
  4. 15 days or less remaining and the train is sold out: go onto the real-time waitlist and look for other options simultaneously.
  5. Traveling will begin in a few days, and the itinerary cannot be changed: reserve the best available option and consider the waitlist as a fallback option.

This is how it works for a hypothetical passenger traveling from Denver and looking for a morning train from Beijing to Shanghai on December 18. On October 24, there will be 55 days until the date of travel. Therefore, she can make her advance ticket request. She considers two morning trains as exact requests and one flexible request for any second-class seats between 8:00 am and 11:00 am.

The fulfillment of the order takes place between November 28 and December 2. If the request fails, she will try to book a ticket during the standard sale period starting around December 3 or 4.

If your preferred train is not listed in the booking list, then the pilot does not cover that train. Your app will tell you which trains can accept requests. Do not make any assumptions that all Beijing to Shanghai trains qualify for advance ticket requests.

The ticket on the waiting list is not partially confirmed. Also, people travelling in the same booking might be accommodated in different compartments. Plan for the risk in case you all need seats together.

There is another convenience provided on 12306. This is an estimate of the likelihood of a confirmed booking. The rail authority estimates this based on past data, but it is provided for information purposes only.

Prepare your 12306 account before the window opens

The pre-request can be made within the official 12306 app. This means that your 12306 account should be prepared for a swift booking process on the opening dates, as per your travel itinerary.

  • Verify your passport in advance. 12306 does allow foreign passports for ticket booking, but verification can take between 3 and 5 days.
  • Locate the section using its Chinese name. The announcement is called 预约购票. Screenshot it and match it with the options on your screen.
  • Confirm the payment method. A fulfilled booking will expire at 11:00 pm Beijing time, so sorting the payment after fulfillment is not possible.
  • Enter the exact names and passport numbers. Foreign passport holders go through a manual gate check at the stations and present their passports. Therefore, the names should match as they are.
  • Check the application daily until fulfillment. The announcement lists several ways of receiving the confirmation: 12306 app, WeChat, Alipay, and via SMS. However, SMS for foreign numbers is unknown. You should not reply to it and should check your order status every day.

Where does Trip.com fit?

Trip.com is an alternative, not the route to the official pilot. Its interface is more convenient for foreign travelers than the 12306 app. Trip.com allows you to reserve tickets 60 days before your travel dates and books them automatically after the tickets are available from China Railway. The waitlist system keeps track of cancellations until 2 hours before the departure time.

If you cannot book through the pilot, check other trains at different times and seats on Trip.com’s Beijing to Shanghai search page.

The fallback ladder

If the waitlist or request fails, plan your alternatives from less drastic options to more:

  1. Choose another departure time on the same day. Early morning or late night may still have available seats.
  2. Another seat category. It is possible that the second-class tickets are sold out, but not the first-class.
  3. Another train station within the same city. Take into account the transfer time from one station to another, as "same city" might also mean an hour-long train ride.
  4. Another date of travel. This is a good option if your pre-booked hotel allows you to change the check-in date free of cost.
  5. Choosing a domestic flight. Consider the overall time taken, including transfers from home to the airport and back.

Each train has the exact station displayed in its reservation details. Beijing and Shanghai have more than one train station, and there is no guarantee that the stations for the conventional trains will be the same as the stations for the high-speed trains. Double-check the names of all stations in each train you put on your order and compare your hotel distance with the station name on your ticket.

Common mistakes and failure cases

Mistake

Reason

Considering a submitted request as a booked ticket

Submission is only a request. Once the payment is made after fulfillment, your ticket is booked.

Keep your backup plan ready until your ticket is booked.

Submitting after the window is closed

The last day for making requests is 17 days before your departure date.

Check your window on the day when you know your travel dates, do not wait until the first train is sold out.

Confusing the pilot with the  regular waitlist

The waitlist starts after the regular sale opens and all tickets are booked. Advance requests take place before the regular sale.

Check the number of days left for your travel date, then choose the booking method.

Failure to make payment before 11:00 pm Beijing time

Fulfillment is cancelled automatically, and successive cancellations trigger a 90-day suspension period.

Create phone reminders in your time zone on days of fulfillment.

Assuming all Beijing-Shanghai trains allow advance requests

This pilot covers over 200 trains, but not the entire set of trains between these two cities.

Choose from the trains the app lists.

Entering a single train only in your order list

There is no flexibility or alternatives with just one choice

Add a few trains as per your preference along with a flexible request.

Booking non-refundable hotels early

Fulfillment is not guaranteed.

Book non-refundable hotel reservations once you have train booking confirmation

Conclusion

Use the pilot only if you have a planned itinerary and can still act within its timeframe. Book flights and hotels with free cancellation if those items are dependent on your confirmed train ticket. Plan a fallback option in case you do not get a ticket.
