China Train Booking Tips for Foreigners with Passport

China Train Booking Tips

China train booking can be a straightforward process if you know the right steps to take. Here are some tips to help you book train tickets in China:

  • 1. Plan Ahead: China Train tickets can be purchased up to 15 days in advance. During peak travel times, such as Chinese New Year, National Day (October 1st), tickets can sell out quickly. It's best to plan your trip and book your tickets as early as possible.
  • 2. Plan Your Travel with Trip.com: You can book train tickets through Trip.com, which offer English interfaces and accept international credit cards, but they may charge a small service fee.
  • 3. Know Your Train Types and Classes: China has different types of trains, including high-speed trains (G and D category), express trains (Z category), and regular trains (T, K, and other categories). High-speed trains are faster and more comfortable but also more expensive.
  • 4. Understand the Seat Classes: High speed train generally offers 3 types of seat classes: second class, first class, and business class. Regular China trains offers hard seat, hard sleeper, and soft sleeper. Choose the type and class that best fits your budget and comfort preferences.

China Train Booking: Understand the Seat Classes
  • 5. Have Your Passport Ready: When booking a train ticket, you'll need to provide your passport number and other personal information. You'll also need your passport when picking up your ticket and boarding the train.
  • 6. Choose Your Seat: If you're booking a high-speed train, you'll often have the option to select a seat. Window seats offer better views, while aisle seats allow for easier movement. If you're traveling with others, try to book seats together.
  • 7. Ticket Pickup and E-Tickets: After booking online, you can pick up your physical ticket at any railway station in China or use an automatic ticket machine if you have a Chinese ID card. Some routes and booking platforms also offer e-ticket options, where you can use your passport directly to board the train without needing a physical ticket.
China Train Booking: Arrive Early to Board
  • 8. Arrive Early: Train stations in China can be large and crowded. Arrive at least an hour before your departure time to navigate the station, go through security checks, and find your waiting area and platform.
  • 9. Baggage Allowance: Be aware of the baggage allowance on Chinese trains. Each passenger is typically allowed to carry up to 20 kg (44 lbs) of luggage, with the total dimension of each item not exceeding 160 cm.
  • 10. Food and Drinks: Most high-speed trains have a dining car and offer cart service with snacks and drinks. You can also bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages on board.
  • 11. Cancellation and Changes: If your plans change, you can cancel or modify your ticket before departure. The rules and fees for changes and cancellations vary, so check the terms and conditions when you book.
  • 12. Keep Your Ticket: Keep your ticket with you throughout the journey, as you may need it to exit the station at your destination.
  • 13. Download a Translation App: If you don't speak Mandarin, a translation app can be invaluable for communication in train stations or with staff.
  • 14. Respect Local Etiquette: Be mindful of local customs and etiquette on trains, such as not speaking loudly on your phone and keeping your area clean.

This is a really cool Beijing Disneyland. It's crowded. Bring strollers with children, even older ones. The grounds are gigantic. I highly recommend it.

THIS IS COOL!!!!!! We didn't get fast-track tickets, but we did EVERYTHING worth seeing. It's as cool as it gets! State-of-the-art rides, augmented reality, a dream come true for both kids and adults! I highly recommend it. Afterwards, we went to Disney and realized it was a waste of time. A must-see!!!!! We visited all the locations in one day, went on all the most interesting rides (we got through the lines in 30-40 minutes, max), and saw three shows, including a light show. Nothing but positive emotions.

The Palace Museum (Forbidden City)

The place is worth visiting. It's a quick tour, as the buildings all look similar and you don't enter any of them. The security checks at the entrance are extreme; you have to empty your pockets, they take your jacket, and they search everything. They even confiscated the alcohol spray I use for sanitizing. They even asked me about the bulge in my pockets, and it was just some paper! Anyway, the place is worth seeing. Although, if you're already traveling around China, there are other places that are just as beautiful, or even more so. This one is iconic, of course.

You need to book tickets in advance because there's a limit on the number of people allowed in each day. Upon arrival, you can simply use your passport to enter; it's very hassle-free and convenient.

had a wonderful experience on the Palace Museum small group in-depth tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English, which made it easy to follow along and appreciate the rich history of the Forbidden City. The meeting point was easy to find, and everything was well organized from start to finish. The Forbidden City itself is an incredible place to visit — full of culture, stories, and beautiful architecture. It was quite busy and very cold on the day of my visit, but the sun was shining, which made it even more enjoyable. Overall, I really enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Beijing and wanting a deeper understanding of this historic site.

A childhood dream can truly come true. That's all. The rides are average, but the only thing worth the 2-3 hour wait is the off-season. Overall, it's worth checking out the locations and trying a couple of rides. THERE'S NO POINT IN BUYING A FASTPASS!!! We bought one regular and two fastpass tickets, the price difference was significant, but in reality, we tried almost everything except Tron, within 10-20 minutes. If you're only going to Shanghai and have always wanted to go to Disneyland, then yes. But if you only have the opportunity to stop in Beijing and visit Universal, then definitely not. Disney is Luna Park, Universal is modern times and augmented reality rides.

An interesting experience. Beautiful views, but the food is rather monotonous. You can try everything, but there are only 4-5 truly delicious dishes. It's probably worth a try.

We bought tickets for the Trip; they were a little cheaper than at the box office. You show the QR code and get in. Since my child was over 130 cm tall, we bought an adult ticket. The climb up the tower is very fast, which can be hard on the head. After the tour, I felt a little dizzy, which went away after a day, but the discomfort lingered until the evening, and my child's ears were clogged. The glass-floored platform at the top is impressive; it's a little scary to walk on, but you get used to it. The show hall is also unusual; you can relax in massage chairs on the ground floor. There's a Burger King and Starbucks on site.
