Langley Castle Hotel

Langley Castle. Big thank you, to ALL the Langley Castle team for making our stay so special and magical. I had no idea where I was going until we arrived at the castle. All I knew, is we were staying overnight and dinner will be a fine dining experience, and one of the best we have had over the years. Driving through the forest and following the long winding road, we finally arrived at Langley Castle woodland estate Northumberland . I thought to myself’ as the castle came into view ‘ OMG. As we both walked towards the castle it was utterly breath taking, with the huge fountain sitting so elegant in front of the castle, along with the truly beautiful landscape surroundings . We walked through the huge wooden door of the castle’ and into the grand castle hallway- WOW 😮 just WOW. The castle is steeped in history. Knights stand stall in traditional armour, a beautiful wooden staircase that traveled as far up’ as the eyes could see, along with stunning period furniture, flags and pictures that blended in so well with this 640 year old castle , and 7 feet wide stone walls. The magnificent drawing room, with blazing log fire, traceries and stained glass, together with the oak-panelled cocktail bar, compliment the intimate nature of the Josephine Restaurant. The food served in the restaurant is of the highest order boasting a 2AA Rosette, making the most of fresh, local produce, with fish and game a speciality. Once we were checked in, we were shown to our room. As we made our way to the featured room called the- Derwentwater room, after Earls of Derwentwater (James and Charles Radcliffe) and both Earls were executed at the Tower of London for their parts in the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1745. A shrine to the brothers lies a short walk . Once again as we entered the room ‘WOW’ 😮 The room was magnificent to say the least, with its beautiful four poster bed, high ceilings, draped beautiful red curtains, fireplace, and stunning period furniture. Author JK Rowling came to stay in this Castle, not once but FOUR times, to gain inspiration for the Harry Potter books. The castle is said to be haunted by a ‘Grey Lady’, reputed to be Maud de Lucy, widow of Sir Thomas, who threw herself out of a window having received news of his death at the Battle of Shrewsbury. Author JK Rowling, wrote into the Harry Potter books moaning myrtle, on the back of the reputed Maud de Lucy - Grey lady. The huge long winding staircases that traveled so high up into the top of the castle, as far as your eyes could see into the darkness , was also written into the books of Harry Potter-the famous staircase of Hogwarts. American Stuart Madnick, Baron of Langley, and his wife (sadly passed away) Own the Northumberland castle . Stuart Madnick, the John Norris Maguire Professor of Information Technology and Engineering Systems, has owned Langley Castle in England since 1985. The castle was purchased for around £70,000, and £1-million was spent ren

Lois and David are very hospitable and Lois made us feel very welcome when we arrived. There is a real cosy feel to Shaftoes. The room and common area for the guests are very clean and Lois has some great ideas for making your stay more comfortable. Breakfast was excellent, the bed was comfortable and there was a good shower. We used Shaftoes as a base to drive to Hadrians Wall and Vindolanda. We would not hesitate to stay again when in the area. Thank you!

We arrived early and our room was ready. The spa facilities were adequate. Only comment is some update needed to the rock effect around the pool. The food in the Clarets jug was fine. Dessert bit disappointing. The staff very friendly and Neville not sure his title but was a perfect gentleman. He transported our luggage to and from our bedroom with no effort. Neville was very polite and friendly. Hope to see him next time we visit.

Booked as a last minute mini honeymoon getaway due to a flight cancellation. We stayed in one of the updated rooms which was nice and comfortable. We couldn’t fault any of the meals either at breakfast or evening meal. The picnic lunch was a little disappointing but overall we were nicely surprised. The leisure facilities are a great addition to the hotel. Of course the hotel could do with some updating but the surrounding areas are beautiful and worth exploring. The staff were very pleasant and helpful to us during our stay. Ask for updated rooms such as 314/5/6 if this is what you would prefer. Overall we were very content with our stay.
