Reviews From Real Travelers
It's a historical hotel with a long history. You can feel the traditions of Japan. They provide great service. Even though you it's a super old hotel, but it's very clean and tidy inside. They have done the renovation so you don't feel that old. That means you can feel the history but super clean and tidy.

Staying at Shoho in Matsumoto was an unforgettable experience that truly deserves five stars. Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Nagano Prefecture, this hotel seamlessly blends traditional Japanese elegance with modern luxury. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were enveloped by a warm and inviting ambiance that set the tone for the rest of our stay. Our room was a perfect sanctuary—spacious, meticulously clean, and adorned with subtle touches of Japanese artistry. The panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from our window were nothing short of breathtaking, especially when the mountains were bathed in the soft glow of sunrise. The traditional tatami flooring and comfortable futon bedding provided an authentic experience without sacrificing comfort. One of the standout features of Shoho is its exceptional onsen facilities. Soaking in the natural hot springs while gazing at the picturesque scenery was incredibly rejuvenating. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) offered a tranquil escape where the stresses of daily life simply melted away. The hotel's attention to detail extended to these spaces, with beautifully crafted woodwork and stone elements enhancing the overall atmosphere. Culinary delights awaited us at every meal. The kaiseki dinner was a masterpiece—a multi-course feast that highlighted seasonal and local ingredients. Each dish was artfully presented and demonstrated a profound respect for Japanese culinary traditions. The breakfast buffet was equally impressive, offering a wide array of both Japanese and Western options to suit all palates. The staff at Shoho went above and beyond to ensure our stay was exceptional. Their genuine hospitality was evident in every interaction, from assisting with our luggage to offering insightful recommendations on local attractions. Despite any language barriers, their kindness and professionalism shone through. The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the rich cultural heritage of Matsumoto. We were just a short drive from the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. Strolling through the historic Nakamachi Street with its classic white-walled storehouses turned boutique shops and cafes was a delightful way to spend an afternoon. In addition to its proximity to cultural sites, Shoho serves as a great base for nature enthusiasts. The nearby Kamikochi Valley offers stunning hiking trails that showcase the unspoiled beauty of the Japanese Alps. Returning to the comfort of the hotel after a day of exploration was something we looked forward to, especially knowing a soothing onsen soak awaited us. In summary, Shoho encapsulates the essence of Japanese hospitality. Every aspect of our stay was thoughtfully curated to provide comfort, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. We left feeling deeply refreshed and with a greater appreciation for the wonders of Matsumoto. Shoho is more than just a place to stay—it's an experience that lingers long after you've departed. We wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an authentic and luxurious retreat in Japan.

It is a pleasure to stay at this hotel because of its cleanliness and the services it provides. Despite the fact that the property is old and needs some renovation, I am still happy to leave a very good review. The hotel provides a free shuttle service to Matsumoto station. Additionally, it offers complimentary onsen access at another hotel, with shuttle bus service included. Hotel guests should make full use of these. Reminder: To ensure your seat at the onsen, please make the reservation by 9am every day. I will stay at this hotel again when I visit Matsumoto next time.
- Fatbing
Clean with very good facilities, particularly the washing and drying machine which caters for our laundry needs. Breakfast is tasty with various kinds of food. Really appreciate the shuttle bus service to nearby JR station upon check out. Staff is helpful. Excellent hotel during my stay in Japan. Highly recommended.

Matsumoto served as a convenient one-night stopover on my way to Kamikochi. Ever since my first stay at a Nono hotel in Tottori, I've been completely hooked. Now, whenever I visit a city with a Nono property, it's always my top choice. Nono positions itself as a city onsen hotel, aiming to provide an authentic hot spring ryokan experience right in the heart of the city. Guests are requested to remove their shoes upon entry, and the entire hotel features traditional tatami flooring. The top floor boasts both indoor and open-air hot spring baths, perfect for soaking away the day's fatigue. To top it off, complimentary ice cream is available after your bath! From 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, they offer complimentary ramen. The soy sauce ramen, though simple, is exceptionally tasty. Guests can also help themselves to complimentary soft drinks. Nono's breakfast spread is also very impressive. During my stay, they even had all-you-can-eat melon, which was an absolute treat! The room size was perfectly adequate; we had enough space to comfortably open two 28-inch suitcases.
- HooINbin
The train station is less than a 10-minute walk away. Despite the railway tracks being directly across the road, the soundproofing of the room windows is excellent – once closed, there's absolutely no noise. The front desk staff was very enthusiastic in introducing the hotel's facilities and services. Complimentary soft drinks are available in the restaurant from afternoon until evening, and they even offer free late-night ramen. The hotel boasts fantastic views, with mountains visible right outside the window.

The room has a small balcony, and it is quite comfortable to go out and get some fresh air. However, a cockroach appeared at night, and the brave lady at the front desk came to help catch it. The breakfast is rich, and it is best to book dinner in advance.

I was stranded in Matsumoto because I overestimated the travel time I had remaining to make the JR schedule. The Dormy at Matsumoto was perfect - the outdoor rooftop hot spring in the snow was one of my favorite experiences. Breakfast ended at 9:30 so I missed it - usually I think breakfasts end at 10:30. But they had free Hersheys ice cream, Yakult, coffee, and more throughout the small Disneyland-hotel-Ryokan.

The second time I came to Matsumoto, I specially booked this hotel converted from a bank. The ordinary double room in the hotel is relatively small, but very clean. The only drawback is that the air in the room is not very circulated. Although there is an air purifier, there is still a little smell. If you go out during the day, you can open the window to change the air yourself. The more upscale rooms have a living room and kitchen, and the bathroom is more spacious. The experience is better. The scenery outside the window is very good. This time I lived on the fifth floor and I could already see the mountains in the distance. If you come in winter or spring, you can definitely see the snow-capped peaks. The hotel's breakfast is superb, not only rich in choices, but also very good in taste. There are various Japanese and Western snacks and side dishes to choose from. Miso soup is great. There is also fried beef, which is expensive. The place for breakfast is a banquet hall with two floors, and there is a handrail staircase leading to the second floor. I happened to encounter a Japanese wedding on the day of breakfast. Several staff members were setting up and shooting in the small hall on the second floor. The atmosphere was very good. Japanese hotels are quiet. There was only beautiful background music during breakfast. You could hardly hear people talking. Everyone was whispering and a little restrained. The hotel front desk was warm and responsive. We also visited the Citizen Hot Spring, which was just a stone's throw away from the hotel, based on the recommendation. It was small and simple, and we experienced the various aspects of Japanese life in depth. Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto City Museum, and Matsumoto Clock Museum are all within easy reach, making them easy to visit. You can especially go to Matsumoto Castle at night to see the beautiful figure reflected in the city.

Since our main destination was Kamikochi, staying in Matsumoto was the best option. The Man'ya Hotel was a great value (breakfast included), and the rooms were spacious. There was a washing machine and dryer on the second floor, along with an ice machine, which was very convenient. Matsumoto isn't a big hotel, just a 10-minute walk from the station and a 15-20 minute walk to attractions like the art museum and Matsumoto Castle.
