I booked this hotel because I'm a sucker for older buildings with Art Deco architecture. When I walked into the lobby, i was pleased...it appeared to have delivered in that department. The gold elevators, the floors, the fixtures were all exactly what I was looking for. Sadly, once we got up to our room, the charm of the hotel ended with a thud. The room was dark. We fumbled for the light switch, and a single low-watt lightbulb flickered on by the bed. The rest of the stay, I tried to get some kind of illumination (other than the flashlight on my phone) but was thwarted at every attempt. The floor lamp's bulb was burnt out. Other switches did nothing. The curtains were impossible to budge or even reach. It felt like we were in a cave...a cave with dated carpeting and beat up furniture. It's sad, because this building could be such an amazing hotel if they put a little love and design into the rooms. We ate at the restaurant downstairs for dinner and it was pretty good. Over all, however, I say thumbs down. Kimpton, I thought you guys would do better than this!

This is a decent property right across the street from the convention center in Down Town Winston Salem. Valet parking cost about the same amount as parking in the public garage so I recommend it. The room I was in was updated and in very good condition. I coun't hear any road noise but I was on the 16th floor and that may be why. The front desk was helpful on check in. I can recommend this property. It isn't too pricey and they don't try to add silly destination fees.

We had a rehearsal dinner for my sons wedding, We are from Florida, so I had to plan the dinner over the phone. I was totally satisfied with the service. The service overall from planning to execution was amazing, My contact Erin Brown provided excellent customer service. Food was excellent and servers were amazing.

I just stayed 3 nights at Indigo for work. It was my first stay since early 2020. My employee also stayed there, and had a similar experience. Pros (and the only reasons I’m giving a 3 rating): The restaurant was the best meal I’ve had in years (though a little pricey). Also, the restaurant/bar/front desk staff were all really nice. Cons: The thermostat in my room did not work, and no attempt to fix it was made, which means it will remain an issue for future guests. The plus was that there is a master control downstairs so they can set it for you, but they have to do that anytime you want it changed. Also, the system was apparently set to change my AC of 68 to HEAT set at 75 midday, so every day after work the room was blazing hot and I had to call the front desk to change. One time they couldn’t figure it out so I literally helped the front desk figure out how to use the system. Another con is that the rooms are filthy. I’m no clean freak, but every surface needed a deep cleaning. If you want to see for yourself just look on top of the wardrobe which is short enough to put things on ( don’t). They also didn’t clean daily. Nothing was tidied up, nothing wiped down, no towels were replaced. They literally just made the bed. My employee said the same for her room. I don’t see myself staying here ever again, which I hate because the decor and staff were great.

Had a great experience here. Has a big city, boutique hotel feel to it. Easy walk to Foothills, Camino Bakery and other locations. Decor is an interesting and eclectic mix of modern and mid-century. Room was clean and well-appointed. Wonderful service from front desk, valet, and housekeeping. Very cool bar. Enjoyed drinks there before heading out to dinner. Full service restaurant on site as well.

Reviews From Real Travelers
This hotel has seen better days-such as back in 1995 perhaps. I've actually stayed here multiple times the last few months because of the location, but this last trip made me decide it's time to move on. I travel every week for work, and some things I look for are: cleanliness of course, soft pillows, decent towels, air conditioning that works, friendly people, walls that aren't paper thin, and rooms that aren't a hot mess. Pros: location, breakfast (though I've never had it), water pressure. Cons: Ever heard of the expression, ”lipstick on a pig?” This describes this hotel perfectly. You enter the lobby and it's beautiful-really is. Apparently they did a remodel. That's where the remodel ends. From the lobby, you enter the 3 elevators. All are nasty. They appear to be more like freight elevators, than elevators that are off a big beautiful lobby. They kind of smell, walls/floor are gross, and you get out of them and generally feel dirty. The rooms are circa 1995. Nothing is updated. Again, I have stayed here probably 5-6 times, so I have seen multiple rooms. The carpets are foul and fraying. The walls are stained up. The bathroom has super old faucets and sprayers, dirt in the corners, and the shower curtain/liner has seen way better days. My last room that finally made me decide to be a little crazy and stay elsewhere next time, had an air conditioning system that banged when it turned on, stayed on for a few minutes, then went off, and would bang again 30 minutes later. This room also had this phone whose picture I attached. All the buttons have been removed and it's filthy. The room I had before this one had an adjoining room. The door adjoining the 2 rooms was missing a lock and wasn't even flush against the wall (picture attached). I bring a door stopper with me on all my trips that I jammed up under this door-the only reason why I had kept the room and I was super tired. Anyway, I will stay at the Hampton a block away or the Courtyard my next trips. Just set your expectations correctly if you stay here.

So this place is a bit of a mess. Bottom line, it's rougher than you are expecting it to be. There is a big bus station next door plus the convention center. The property is attached to a public parking deck with a walkway bridge to the Marriott across the street. Except - it's a problem. The walkway is locked on the Marriott side so you need a Marriott key to enter. But anyone can walk from the second floor of the parking deck into the Embassy - on the floor above reception so they have full access to the entire building (the elevators do not require a room key so every floor is accessible). Also parkign in the public deck cost me $24 for 24 hours. The property itself feels tired. The room was worn but the bed was actually good so they must have done some updating. The bathroom sink and shower drains are very slow. The A/C is super weak. I don't know if the filters are clogged or if the system needs freon or what but fortunately it was cold outside. The wifi was pitiful. It was so slow that i ran a speed test and measured 4.08 down and 1.85 up. So don't expect to do much online. But the front desk folks were great. They even had cookies which was a nice touch. Overall this property felt like a lower end hotel. The Marriott across the street is much nicer. The Hampton a block down the street is nicer. But if you just need to be here for one night it will suffice.

The staff has exceptional customer service from the front desk to hospitality! The wine and cheese from 5 - 7 were great to ”wind down” for the day and the cookies and milk from 8 - 9 were so tasty for an evening treat or bedtime snack. My room was LARGE with two levels - queen size bed, a large sofa, a side chair, and a faux fireplace with a space heater to imitate the real deal. The space heater did heat up the room because it was quite chilly. The only complaint I have is that my microwave did not work and it was pretty cold in the rooms but the staff was more than willing to accommodate my needs. The floors creek a lot when people are walking or just settling for the evening. Those little inconveniences will be there with the age of this building but it also speaks to its history...thus the story of Sally the Ghost. I was not afraid of that after reading about her story on my first night there.

The place is inviting and beautiful, worth a visit. There was wonderful service and many complimentary items as well, such as breakfast, cheese and wine, and milk and cookies. Everything was very nice especially considering the age. What caught our attention most probably is that they have a cat, miss sally, who is just out and about, and is a sweet little surprise

I was unable to stay in my over $250 room due to bed bug infestation, which we discovered at 1:30 am when we returned to our room. Bed bugs in the bathroom, along the bed frame, on the desk, in my friend’s bag, in the suite kitchen. I have geotagged photos of the bed bugs. The hotel was fully booked so we knew we would have to find another hotel since we would not stay in an unsanitary, bed bug infested room. We requested a refund at the front desk. The attendant refused the refund, refused to help, refused to give any documentation of my complaint, refused to have anyone check the room or check it himself. He said that reimbursement would have to come through Priceline where I had booked the room. He said I could speak to the manager in the morning (“Brandy”). I requested a form or a way to officially document the issue so that I could share that with Priceline. I had a feeling that the hotel would not reimburse me. The attendant suddenly interrupted me, became aggressive with me, raised his voice, then began yelling and threatened to call police if we did not leave immediately. He continued yelling at me so we left because we felt intimidated. He was not wearing any uniform or name tag. After 3 days of me trying to reach management and Priceline, with multiple desk attendants saying managers were not on the premises, the GM Scott returned my call and said Orkin had inspected the room and found no bed bugs. He refused reimbursement. I am not surprised that after 3 days of the hotel being able to clean the room that Orkin did not find much. Why would I, a customer who just wanted a peaceful night’s sleep and who had already pre-paid the room, lie about bed bugs? We were unable to use the room. We had to drive to Durham and pay for another room. I also noticed that my card was charged twice - once through Priceline and once from Residence Inn. This is fraud. I simply requested full reimbursement for this room which I was unable to stay in due to unsanitary conditions and reached no hotel employees or managers who were sympathetic, apologetic, or in any way helpful.
- Guest User
Check in was very friendly and helpful. The room was quite large, especially for just one night. Bathroom was spacious and a very large work area in the living space. It was perfect for our needs. Comfortable bed as well and good location. Lots of parking a plus.

My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend in Winston-Salem. We always stay at Hilton affiliated properties, so we booked for 2 nights at this property due to location and amenities. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The lobby and pool areas were extremely nice. We had a king junior suite, which was nice in size. The bed was super comfortable. Here are a few suggestions for improvement: the a/c unit was not in the “bedroom” part of the suite, so it got very hot laying in bed. The a/c unit is an older model…there was a wall thermostat but it didn’t work. The bathroom looked all new, but there was a ton of mold in the shower. Wallpaper was peeling of the walls in the hall. The carpet in the hallway on the first floor needed a serious cleaning. Would I come back, yes…but I do think this property needs to work on the details.

I needed a place close to the hospital and my daughters college for her surgery. Hawthorne was the closest to both, almost within walking distance to both. I reserved our room for our stay in advance, in which I received an early bird discount. We also received another discount since we were there for the main purpose of the hospital. Due to other circumstances, the day before we were to check in, I needed to check in a day early. They were very understanding and accommodating and still gave me the same rate. The day of her surgery, we realized that our room was not going to be as accessible as we thought, so we needed to change rooms. Again, Hawthorne was very understanding and accommodating and moved us into a more comfortable room for her with no questions asked. On day of check out, we needed a late check out due to having to wait on our transportation, and again, very understanding and accommodating, no questions asked. The entire staff from Check In all the way to Maintenance were AMAZING! They went above and beyond to meet our needs, help us with my daughter and her wheelchair, and made us feel so welcome. The room was spacious, extremely clean (the entire facility was immaculate), and the beds were very comfortable. The pool area was beautiful, although closed for the season. Due to Covid, they did not have the Continental Breakfast as listed on their website, but did have a ”Grab and Go” bag with coffee and afternoon tea in the lobby area.

Filthy, musty hallways. Only good thing is clean bedding in room. Bathroom looked like a 2 year old caulked the repairs, chipped pain all over bathroom and ceiling in room. Elevator under repair, freight elevator sounded like it was ready to break. Upon arrival told pool was closed yet there were children swimming in it. Tiles in entryway to hotel all cracked and crumbling, covered over with rugs...Total tripping hazard . Neighborhood was terrible. I was actually approached by panhandler in a fast food restaurant 2 blocks away. If I hadn't been so tired (I drove quite a distance that day) we would have gone further down the road on our journey.

This is the place to stay in Winston Salem. My nephew who was only a day old was transferred to the NICU at at local hospital. As you can imagine my brother had a lot going on. I called the hotel and Tanya went ABOVE AND BEYOND to accommodate and help to make this horrible situation a little easier. She kept in contact with me during my brothers stay, extended his stay and the hotel even got the baby a gift that was waiting for them at check out. Everyone should take a lesson from this employee. The kindness she showed was so appreciated. There are not enough words to describe how much it meant. Thank you Tanya! She deserves a raise!

Chose the location due to proximity to family we were visiting. Location is great -- close to highways, mall, and lots of restaurants. Once inside, though, we were surprised at the age of the hotel and its need for updates and repairs. The elevator was small and finicky; it liked to alarm for no reason when getting in. The hallways were hot and needed vacuuming. Our room was very spacious, with the door to the hall and bathroom placed at an angle to increase accessibility. The carpet in the room was stained, there was a hole punched in the wall, mildew on the shower curtain, a pink mystery stain on the ceiling in the shower, dead insects in the ceiling light in the bathroom, no extra toilet paper (we quickly ran out), and no tissues in the built-in tissue holder on the sink. Relatives of ours in another room said their soap holder shelf in their shower was ripped out and there was a hole in its place--no covering/tape/anything. We were informed that there would be no maid service during our stay (if staying less than 7 days) due to lack of staff, so if we needed anything, you had to go to the front desk for it. Breakfast was available; the only hot items were waffles or instant grits (hot water was available). Overall, the property seemed in need of a deep clean at a minimum, or at best, an update. The price is reasonable, but I would rather pay a bit more for a better-kept property with daily maid service available.
