Very good hotel at a good location. We occupied luxury room and were amazed. Brand new teak furniture with matching wood work, nice pictures around the hotel and room, brand new bathrooms with high quality fittings. It was very good value for money. Emails leading up to booking were promptly responded with all relevant details regarding price, cancellation policy, etc which made the booking easy. Well trained staff were always available to see our needs. Restaurant has a variety of tasty food, freshly cooked at reasonable price. Would recommend this to anyone without any hesitation.

Location is beautiful and rooms are just enough to spend a night. In my "better" room with small extra charge, there was only one power socket in room, no table lamps. Balcony door didn't get closed properly and shower was bit dirty. No shower gel or shampoo included in rooms, and no room cleaning service. Breakfast was coffee, bread and butter, banana and egg. Dinner is almost same every night, fried rice and chicken. At around 20 euros / 25 dollars per night it might be ok, but it's clearly not that fantastic place that some people say. Biggest problem is the communication with staff. They don't speak/understand english properly and they reserved us their own driver (without any confirmation from us!) on our last morning even though we told couple of times that we already had a taxi booked on our own. Beforehand we had only asked about taxi price, not anything else. Our driver had to pay to hotel staff for letting us leave, even though it was hotel's mistake.

Stayed here for 3 nights with a friend. We had a basic twin room which was very clean and perfect for our stay in Ella. Hotel is up a very very steep hill which cars struggle to get to the top of so wouldn’t recommend for those that have any struggle with walking. Staff all very friendly, hotel manager made us feel very welcome, gave helpful advice for things to do in Ella and gave us a detailed map on how to climb to the top of Ella rock. Breakfast was different everyday and very nice. All in all brilliant value for money!

We've got to stay in this hotel because the hotel that was usually use was sold out. However it was a great experience, The Aloft Grand is located on a slope and is being renewed. They have very cosy, modern and spacious cottages. The service is very good and attentive as well,as the kitchen is high class with an individual service. The pool was just finished when we arrived and as matter of fact we have been the first guest to use it :-)

We stayed in two different cabins during January 2020. There were some positives - a stunning view and lovely breakfasts that could be eaten while enjoying the view. We found the location to be good. Unfortunately we ran into some problems - One cabin had a cold shower the first night. The other had a faulty flush for the toilet. Both showers had very poor water pressure, making it challenging to wash hair. We weren’t given the WiFi password until the second night, despite requesting it. It was difficult to get help from staff during the day, though they did seem like very nice people. One cabin had an off-putting smell, possibly related to the toilet that wasn’t flushing well. The booking site we booked through indicated daily housekeeping, 24 hour front desk and "free private parking is available on site". We found none of those to be accurate.

My second visit to this hotel – for a more information please see my previous TA review Like all hotels in Sri Lanka guest numbers are down due to the ongoing security situation. Only myself and 4 others staying on this occasion This time I was allocated a smaller (but more than adequate) room in the main block rather than the annex. The large balcony with a south westerly aspect provided spectacular views of mountains with clouds folding in the valleys and in the distance Udawelawa National Park. The open air corridor leading to the room fringed by an orchid rock garden Dinner was only available from an a la carte menu involving a 45 minute wait. Nice to know that the vegetables and herbs are sourced from the hotel garden. The property still has no liquor licence. I brought my own wine and so was well prepared! Breakfast was average and not the same quality as my earlier visit Value for Money – Rates at the time of my visit were similar to my first visit and if guest numbers improve are likely to rise in 2020 X Factor – Despite a downturn in guest numbers standards are being maintained .A spectacular quiet remote location with panoramic views and a private natural waterfall in the grounds make this a very special place

We spent more than a month at the resort, we spent lovely days in a beautiful calm and green corner of Sri Lanka, The staff is always available and nice, for our baby it has been like a second family. The rooms are spacious and clean, the wifi is always available in the resort. We do not want to leave the location but we have to... I recommend it to families and you can enjoy Chinese, Sri Lankan, Indian food and at the same time you can taste an optimum tea in the near tea center just few meter from there.

My husband and have just left this glorious property after a 3 night stay. 5 rooms in a beautifully restored 145 year old tea plantation house surrounded by spectacular hills and valleys. It’s like stepping back in to a bygone era. We arrived in the dark - the estate road was a bit hair raising but added to the experience (thankfully our driver also saw the funny side!) The view we woke up to in the morning was breath taking. Try and book the master room (Warwick) if you can. The property is remote and isolated and that is its beauty so I would also recommend a half board package - the evening meal was an enjoyable affair. Seated around a fully laid ‘Downton Abbey’ table, under a crystal chandelier enjoying the conversation and travel experiences of fellow guests. The food is exceptional, with generous portion sizes. A choice of Western, Sri Lankan and Indian menus - all absolutely delicious. The home made bread and jams at breakfast were to die for. All the vegetables are organic and grown in their own gardens. Even the water is bottled and filtered at a local mountain source. The staff are all from the local area and are very friendly and helpful - they always had the biggest of smiles and couldn’t do enough for you. Ruba, the young cricket enthusiast, with his cheeky smile and love of his village and plantation. Kitty the estate cat with her morning purrs. Meena with her stunning saris and infectious smile. Always to hand, materialising, silently as if by magic. Vijiy who was extremely kind to me when I got upset and very quickly rectified the situation. I am incredibly grateful for your compassion and understanding. Vijiy’s family also very kindly invited us into their home as we were walking past one afternoon. His father greeting us with a very polite ‘good afternoon’. Please take the time to do a walk down in the local area. The scenery is spectacular and the greetings are infectious. If the Estate Manager’s bungalow ever comes up for sale it’s mine - so hands off!!!! There’s no WiFi signal so take a book, enjoy the solitude, gasp at the views and relax with a cup of estate tea. Mr Farris (the property manager) you have an exceptional property and a top class team. Thank you we had a truly unique stay with memories that will last a life time.

the cool weather is its inherent advantage, yet nicely located ( though very close to main road) found it quite pleasing. neatly maintained garden is the first attraction, entrance and the main area was a bit of congested for me, but the 2 seating areas beside the main entrance offer nice environment for a discussion with a drink :) rooms were good, and clean, but the entire setup need some neatness of keeping things and i felt something was missing and the staff may have lost the track over the time staff was extremely good, they were full time on to the service, friendly kind, you name its there, food of cause is not the key factor there, its local food with basic recipe and practice. you could be happy with that, anyway its the best available in the area. overall its a fine place to stay and relax,

How to reach It’s difficult to reach this place if you follow google maps. When you’re coming from Wellawaya in Wellawaya-Beragala A4 main road after passing Diyaluma falls and 203rd km post there’s a sign board for Nature Hub on your left hand side. This is a gravel road and you will come across the Nature hub in around 50 meters. Even it’s bit difficult, a low ground clearance car can also reach the place. You have to go around 200 meters to reach Living Heritage entrance. There are no sign boards indicating this place. There’re two black color large gates at the entrance with a guard room. Overall They will warmly welcome you and will take you to the lobby area. Hotel is situated in a 80 acres of private land. This is a private property with beautiful landscapes. The restaurant, landscaped ground, office and luxury suites are situated nearby. Swimming pool and the lobby situated near forest pavilions. Most of the 80 acres is forest and the unique thing here is that they got a private waterfall inside the property. They have a farm in which they grow vegetables and also got cows. It’s recommended to book at least 2 nights to enjoy the place. Rooms There’re three types of rooms namely Forest pavilions(5), Pepper garden cottage(1) and luxury suites(3) according to ascending order of price. Forest pavilion is situated in the forest, open type of rooms with few layers of curtains to protect you from insects. This is whole lot of different experience as you can truly relax here with nature. The view and the feeling is amazing specially in the mornings. Small bugs and insects around but won’t harm if you tightly close your curtains after around 5pm. Room and the bathroom is bit small for your liking and the linen should be more fresh otherwise there’s nothing much to complain. Pepper garden cottage is situated near the entrance and didn’t got an opportunity to look inside. There’re three luxury suits adjoining each other. The lobbies can be connected to each other if you staying with a group. Each suite has a verandah, lobby with tv area and open, bed room, bathroom and there’s an open shower and a jacuzzi behind. Activities If you’re staying here you must visit the waterfall. It’s about 10 minutes walk in the jungle to reach the top of the waterfall and around 20 minutes to the bottom. What’s unique is it’s private means nobody will disturb you. You should ask the staff for a safe place to bath. There’re hundreds of leeches on the way to waterfall so you should take precautions. They will provide a leech repellent and leech socks. There’re summer huts in the forest where you can relax and enjoy the nature. In the night they will arrange a nice bon fire in the ground. Food We booked a bread and breakfast package and dinner and lunch was served as a la carte. Food was great and served in sufficient portion sizes. They got both Sri Lankan and English menus. Staff Staff is friendly and helpful even though they might not have be

We had a decent stay at Ella Red Rock. We had booked a nearby property, but were redirected to this guest house on arrival. (It felt a bit awkward, but we rolled with it.) Room was clean, large and fairly comfortable. Staff were friendly and eager (perhaps a bit too much so... which is why it felt awkward when we were asked to stay here, rather than where we had registered - we were told it was the same owner...). Biggest drawback is the logistics of getting to the hotel. Our van could not reach, so had to rely on a tuk-tuk to haul up our bags (and some of our party). Rest of us had to climb a very steep, long set of stairs to the property (as well as nearby spots). It was slippery and uneven in spots. (We had to traverse the same path upon our return from dinner, which was tough in the dark - we needed flashlights to find the way). Ella is a funny spot, the places with some of the best views are a tricky to reach, and those in town are overrun with backpackers... Pick your poison, I suppose. We likely wouldn’t choose to stay in this area, again. The difficulty to reach the properties was not offset by the admittedly glorious vistas.

The perfect place if you dont want to be in the centre of Ella. Green view cottage is nearby the centre (about 15 mins), but is in a quit and beautiful area. The view of our room was amazing! Nimantha and his grandparents are a lovely family who makes you feel like home. Every morning they make you a delicious breakfast and if you have questions or you will to do a tour; Nimantha can arrange everything you want. Because of the super delicious traditional Sri Lankan breakfast, we ate there in the evening as well. Nimantha has a menu with all type of differents dishes. De-lic-ious! If the room is available, don’t hesitate and book it!!

The wives from the room was priceless... We were not so happy when we got their first to see the room had 2 glass walls.. with just nothing other than glass ...but, we knew what it ment the moment we got up the very next morning..that panoramic view of the blue mountains from ur bed was unbelievably beautiful Last bit from the road can be bit tricky to drive at first with out a clear view ..so be careful and go within the daylight You will not believe a small hotel like that to serve such good food.. If you aret traveling with kids, room on the ground flow will come handy coz u can watch them playing in the pool etc But the other room will come with more privacy I love the rain shavers in bathrooms and very unusual photos on wall too

If you crave total adventure and also want to be in a peaceful serene environment at the same time, this is the place for you! The entire property holds different experiences at every corner giving you memories that will last a lifetime. From the positioning of the room, to the legendary stories, the staff, the food, the experience is none like any other. Also the food is totally organic and grown from their very own farm.!We fully recommend this for adventure seekers, families and teams as it incorporates team building and confidence at the same time. The views from Hideaway and undeniably stunning. However unfortunately I feel that is the only thing it is holding on to. We stayed for two nights and wished it were one, or even none. To start with we had booked (and paid for) a deluxe twin room, which promised two double beds. However when we were shown to our room it was one double bed. When we questioned the staff they just put an extra single bed into the room we had been shown. The explanation was that the deluxe twin room was ‘taken’ by other guests. Very disappointing given that we had booked and paid months in advance. There was no acknowledgement or gesture to make up for this inconvenience. Plus the extra single bed squeezed into a double room meant there was physically very little room for us to manoeuvre. It didn’t help that the bathroom with filthy upon arrival. We had to share the shower with an alive slug and dead caterpillar! Plus the tiles were caked with months (maybe years) of crusty dirt. This was clearly not a case of being run down, definitely more that it needed a good scrub! In addition the staff did not even go into the room between our first and second night, making it feel all the more grubby. The building itself is quirky and has great potential. However we felt extremely dirty having to eat, sleep and wash there. It should be made clear they there are no other options for eating nearby. The town is a long drive away on windy roads, which no one would want to attempt after dark. And although the food at a Hideaway was ok, we guessed that the kitchen standards of hygiene were likely the same as in the rooms. Not very appetising! All that being said, the staff were really friendly overall. They were very helpful and arranged breakfast for us on the balcony for our last morning. I think it’s more a case that the owner/management need to rethink the reputation of this establishment. It’s a real shame, as I think with a few minimal touches, this place could be fabulous. But they clearly rely on the fact that there is not much choice in the area.
