There is a new Marriott hotel in downtown Winston-Salem, NC - the Courtyard by Marriott. Because it is new, the facilities are clean, modern, and in great shape. The bedroom is pretty spacious, and the beds were very comfortable. A two queen bed room had four, comfortable pillows for each bed. There is a Keurig coffee maker and a min-fridge in the room. The decor is attractive. Bathroom was very clean, which one would expect. The TV was large screen and HBO was included. If you have password access to Prime and Netflix, those are available as well. There is a small bar in the lobby where you can get coffee and a breakfast in the morning or drinks from 5-10 pm. There is also a roof-top bar that was nice. Parking is inexpensive in a parking deck immediately adjacent. But, there are a couple of issues: (1) our room air conditioner had a loud pitched squeal every time it came on and the fan was noisy. We had to turn it off to sleep at night, but that worked because the temps here were mild. The carpet under the unit was soaked a bit. (2) I think the tub was too shallow to take a bath, but the shower was a good one, but why have a tub if it's too shallow for a bath. A walk-in shower would have been better; (3) while it is ”downtown”, it is not right downtown like the other Marriott. Expect a four block walk at the minimum to the where the core of downtown is located. Essentially, the basics are very good, but you won't be wowed by it. Still very worth the cost for a very nice room

Filthy, musty hallways. Only good thing is clean bedding in room. Bathroom looked like a 2 year old caulked the repairs, chipped pain all over bathroom and ceiling in room. Elevator under repair, freight elevator sounded like it was ready to break. Upon arrival told pool was closed yet there were children swimming in it. Tiles in entryway to hotel all cracked and crumbling, covered over with rugs...Total tripping hazard . Neighborhood was terrible. I was actually approached by panhandler in a fast food restaurant 2 blocks away. If I hadn't been so tired (I drove quite a distance that day) we would have gone further down the road on our journey.

This hotel has seen better days-such as back in 1995 perhaps. I've actually stayed here multiple times the last few months because of the location, but this last trip made me decide it's time to move on. I travel every week for work, and some things I look for are: cleanliness of course, soft pillows, decent towels, air conditioning that works, friendly people, walls that aren't paper thin, and rooms that aren't a hot mess. Pros: location, breakfast (though I've never had it), water pressure. Cons: Ever heard of the expression, ”lipstick on a pig?” This describes this hotel perfectly. You enter the lobby and it's beautiful-really is. Apparently they did a remodel. That's where the remodel ends. From the lobby, you enter the 3 elevators. All are nasty. They appear to be more like freight elevators, than elevators that are off a big beautiful lobby. They kind of smell, walls/floor are gross, and you get out of them and generally feel dirty. The rooms are circa 1995. Nothing is updated. Again, I have stayed here probably 5-6 times, so I have seen multiple rooms. The carpets are foul and fraying. The walls are stained up. The bathroom has super old faucets and sprayers, dirt in the corners, and the shower curtain/liner has seen way better days. My last room that finally made me decide to be a little crazy and stay elsewhere next time, had an air conditioning system that banged when it turned on, stayed on for a few minutes, then went off, and would bang again 30 minutes later. This room also had this phone whose picture I attached. All the buttons have been removed and it's filthy. The room I had before this one had an adjoining room. The door adjoining the 2 rooms was missing a lock and wasn't even flush against the wall (picture attached). I bring a door stopper with me on all my trips that I jammed up under this door-the only reason why I had kept the room and I was super tired. Anyway, I will stay at the Hampton a block away or the Courtyard my next trips. Just set your expectations correctly if you stay here.

I booked this hotel because I'm a sucker for older buildings with Art Deco architecture. When I walked into the lobby, i was pleased...it appeared to have delivered in that department. The gold elevators, the floors, the fixtures were all exactly what I was looking for. Sadly, once we got up to our room, the charm of the hotel ended with a thud. The room was dark. We fumbled for the light switch, and a single low-watt lightbulb flickered on by the bed. The rest of the stay, I tried to get some kind of illumination (other than the flashlight on my phone) but was thwarted at every attempt. The floor lamp's bulb was burnt out. Other switches did nothing. The curtains were impossible to budge or even reach. It felt like we were in a cave...a cave with dated carpeting and beat up furniture. It's sad, because this building could be such an amazing hotel if they put a little love and design into the rooms. We ate at the restaurant downstairs for dinner and it was pretty good. Over all, however, I say thumbs down. Kimpton, I thought you guys would do better than this!

Beautiful hotel with an historical feel. The lobby and my room was very clean. The only complaints I have were the scratches all on the tables and caulking in shower were coming apart. Just makes me wonder what does maintenance do? Being that my husband is a director of maintenance at an historic hotel. He pointed these things out and said this could cause for a great place to end up not being so great. Also the shower door just seems to be stuck or just needing some maintenance. Other than that, the housekeeping staff was very nice and did a great job on my stayover service

The staff has exceptional customer service from the front desk to hospitality! The wine and cheese from 5 - 7 were great to ”wind down” for the day and the cookies and milk from 8 - 9 were so tasty for an evening treat or bedtime snack. My room was LARGE with two levels - queen size bed, a large sofa, a side chair, and a faux fireplace with a space heater to imitate the real deal. The space heater did heat up the room because it was quite chilly. The only complaint I have is that my microwave did not work and it was pretty cold in the rooms but the staff was more than willing to accommodate my needs. The floors creek a lot when people are walking or just settling for the evening. Those little inconveniences will be there with the age of this building but it also speaks to its history...thus the story of Sally the Ghost. I was not afraid of that after reading about her story on my first night there.

The staff members here were helpful and professional. We did find trash that wasn't ours under an end table. Other than that, the room seemed to be in good shape. The pool wasn't open, but it is located outside in front of the building. Waffles and other breakfast items were available, but all the tables had been removed from the breakfast area. Sad as there was a nice wooded overlook to enjoy.

Great location and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. Near some great restaurants. Valet parking is $22. Breakfast was good. No free water bottles for silver members which is a disappointment. One of the elevators was very shaky and noisy and that was the one that opened every time except one. A family waiting with me refused to enter it because of the condition. The other elevator that I rode once was fine.

My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend in Winston-Salem. We always stay at Hilton affiliated properties, so we booked for 2 nights at this property due to location and amenities. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The lobby and pool areas were extremely nice. We had a king junior suite, which was nice in size. The bed was super comfortable. Here are a few suggestions for improvement: the a/c unit was not in the “bedroom” part of the suite, so it got very hot laying in bed. The a/c unit is an older model…there was a wall thermostat but it didn’t work. The bathroom looked all new, but there was a ton of mold in the shower. Wallpaper was peeling of the walls in the hall. The carpet in the hallway on the first floor needed a serious cleaning. Would I come back, yes…but I do think this property needs to work on the details.

Chose the location due to proximity to family we were visiting. Location is great -- close to highways, mall, and lots of restaurants. Once inside, though, we were surprised at the age of the hotel and its need for updates and repairs. The elevator was small and finicky; it liked to alarm for no reason when getting in. The hallways were hot and needed vacuuming. Our room was very spacious, with the door to the hall and bathroom placed at an angle to increase accessibility. The carpet in the room was stained, there was a hole punched in the wall, mildew on the shower curtain, a pink mystery stain on the ceiling in the shower, dead insects in the ceiling light in the bathroom, no extra toilet paper (we quickly ran out), and no tissues in the built-in tissue holder on the sink. Relatives of ours in another room said their soap holder shelf in their shower was ripped out and there was a hole in its place--no covering/tape/anything. We were informed that there would be no maid service during our stay (if staying less than 7 days) due to lack of staff, so if we needed anything, you had to go to the front desk for it. Breakfast was available; the only hot items were waffles or instant grits (hot water was available). Overall, the property seemed in need of a deep clean at a minimum, or at best, an update. The price is reasonable, but I would rather pay a bit more for a better-kept property with daily maid service available.

I called the hotel and Tanya went ABOVE AND BEYOND to accommodate and help to make this horrible situation a little easier. She kept in contact with me during my brothers stay, extended his stay and the hotel even got the baby a gift that was waiting for them at check out. Everyone should take a lesson from this employee. Stayed for 13 nights. Had two dogs with us. The first floor room was large, clean, and in good repair. The hotel has grassy areas to walk dogs on three sides. It has disposal cans for the used waste bags and stocked bag dispensers on all three sides. The front desk staff was excellent. Courteous, friendly, and efficient. There is ample free parking. I only had housekeeping a few times, and they did a very good job. The ladies responsible for the breakfast room and preparation do a good job. I go to Winston-Salem about twice a year since 2017. Prior to this visit, we always stayed at another hotel but decided to change as the other one is declining and has seen better days. This hotel was completely satisfying in all respects. The area is extremely convenient, with many restaurants and all kinds of retail close by. There are a couple of medium priced, sit down restaurants within walking distance. I had been told that the area might be very trafficky, but I found that not to be the case, except of course at peak commuting times when all roads in the greater Winston-Salem Metro area are busy. I did use the gym, and it is a typical hotel gym. Adequate but not much more. I think it had three treadmills and all appeared to be in working order. It had a complete set of barbells and two weight benches. Because of the weather, we of course could not use the outdoor pool. I think this will be our go-to hotel for future visits.

In town for 1 night to visitan ill parent. Booked this location last minute online. We had a pet so we paid an additional $15 fee for the dog. Mattress was adequate for one nights sleep. But the room needed some housekeeping attention. The bath towels were full of hair...not ours. The vanity light and ceiling were disgustingly stained. Hotel was in no way accommodating to the comcerns. I was offered my $15 pet fee back. WHAT...my pet was not the problem. The probpem is the lack of sanitation, attention and customer service at this location. The lady who checked us out said she was going to check the towels. THEY SHOULDVE BEEN CHECKED BEFORE YOU GAVE US THE ROOM...NOT WHEN WE ARE LEAVING. Although they are independently owned I will be contacting Choice and sharing the photos.

I needed a place close to the hospital and my daughters college for her surgery. Hawthorne was the closest to both, almost within walking distance to both. Due to other circumstances, the day before we were to check in, I needed to check in a day early. They were very understanding and accommodating and still gave me the same rate. The day of her surgery, we realized that our room was not going to be as accessible as we thought, so we needed to change rooms. Again, Hawthorne was very understanding and accommodating and moved us into a more comfortable room for her with no questions asked. On day of check out, we needed a late check out due to having to wait on our transportation, and again, very understanding and accommodating, no questions asked. The entire staff from Check In all the way to Maintenance were AMAZING! They went above and beyond to meet our needs, help us with my daughter and her wheelchair, and made us feel so welcome. The room was spacious, extremely clean (the entire facility was immaculate), and the beds were very comfortable. The pool area was beautiful, although closed for the season. Due to Covid, they did not have the Continental Breakfast as listed on their website, but did have a ”Grab and Go” bag with coffee and afternoon tea in the lobby area.

The room was very clean and spacious for a double queen. The pool was actually warm, and nice to use, with a very clean area. The staff was so friendly and accommodating to needs. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Only complaint is the price of staying at any hotel, but for the price, you get things that make for a good stay. Nice hot breakfast included.

We had a very good visit last night (parent and three teen kids). Ms. Patricia at the check in was wonderful and the beds were some of the most comfortable we’ve ever had during our travels. They were taller than normal and nice and firm. The hot breakfast was good. Only small problem was the bathroom door in 305 didn’t shut well. On a whole, we would recommend and would stay there again.
