"I visit Glastonbury often & whilst being a (near enough) local, I am fully aware it is a place that is rich in tourism & as such, businesses take advantage of this sector in order to ensure they thrive amongst strong competition. This is acceptable. What is unacceptable are places such as the George & Pilgrim that seem to perceive tourists as being an inconvenience, yet feel as though their response to this perception can go unchallenged, as tourists will always visit Glastonbury & as such, who cares how customers are treated, as when one leaves, another will reappear. My wife & I nipped into the George & Pilgrim for a light lunch & a beverage. At the time of writing, we are operating in COVID-19 related controlled environments, although the George & Pilgrim must believe they are better than this, as apart from a sign at the front door relaying expectations, nobody is asked to “sign in” as part of the Track & Trace initiative, nobody is reminded to wear a mask in certain “mask wearing” areas of the property (although why should they, as the staff are bumbling along without any protective coverings) & the tables are so close together, you can ask a neighbouring customer to pass the salt as if you were at the family dining table. But I am not here to moan about COVID-19 related requirements. There are more generic issues to alert any pending customers of. Service at the bar was slow. They were understandably understaffed, although it wasn’t as though those waiting at the bar were in mass numbers. In fact, there was only one other person at the bar who was obviously waiting for the yeast to ferment before being served his beer. Eventually I was served. One drink was incorrect (lemonade & not soda in the wine). I decided to take a positive in the fact my drink was correct & it was only my wife that had to deal with the error. Plus, there was not enough time in the day to wait for the issue to be corrected. On a slightly positive note, food was served relatively quickly. I say “served”, although I actually mean, thrown on the table without even an “enjoy your meal” coming from the obviously inconvenienced Waiter. OK, not everybody likes pleasantries, although people do expect cutlery & condiments. Nothing! I then went to find the Waiter to ask where I could find a knife & fork, along with vinegar & mayonnaise. The response was abrupt as the Waiter asked where I was sitting before claiming he would be there in 15mins. I explained the food was already on the table to which he said, “OK, 5mins”, whilst rolling his eyes. The Waiter walked past our table several times. The dubious person in me would even say he was purposely trying to avoid eye contact, especially when he disappeared less than 10 feet away from me to have a cigarette. After 10mins, we concluded cutlery & condiments were not arriving so borrowed the latter from a nearby table (after all, they were within coughing distance) & ate using our fingers. The Waiter cleared obse"
"Popped in there for a quick pint during a weekend visit to Glastonbury. I was very pleased to note that they are taking social distancing, cleaning and track & trace seriously. Each table had a sign on indicating whether it was safe to sit at (having been cleaned since the last customers) and there was a spaced out queue for the bar. I had to wait quite a long time outside the toilets when they were being cleaned but in the current climate I didn't mind too much. Staff were visibly cleaning down the surfaces and floors on a regular basis. We decided to eat whilst we were there and had a very nice roast beef dinner. It was my second visit to this pub and I will return next time I come to Glastonbury. I can't comment on the hotel. "
"My one night stay at the George and Pilgrims was made very enjoyable by the welcoming and helpful staff. Many thanks to Alex, interim Manager and to Beth for helping me out with travel plans! Considering this is a VERY old and historic building, complete with winding staircases and creaking passageways, the room was both comfortable and clean. Excellent English breakfast. Recommended for character, location and comfort."
