The Ancient Tea-Horse Road had its origins from the tea-and-horse trade which took place between the ancient southwestern and northwestern frontiers. It flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties and was particularly prosperous immediately after World War II. The Road was divided into two trails: Sichuan-Tibet and Jinghong-Tibet.

Reviews from Real Guests:

TheTravelShow: The ancient town at Tea Horse Road is relatively easy to get to by taxi or private car, as Pu'er is a small place and this is easy to find. Arriving here, we took a nice stroll along the canal and through the scenic old town area, stopping for iced coffee and lunch also. Prices are not expensive here, even though this is considered a tourist site. The buildings were great to look at, as well as the old ancient walls that are built around the old town. We came just before Chinese New Year, therefore the place wasn't that busy, especially in the afternoon we visited. If you are in Pu'er, then it's definitely a place to visit along with the tea museum and seeing a plantation. You should go to the tea museum first and learn about the history of this place before visiting, as it enables you to appreciate the historical perspective of this place. 🍵👘😋

Reviews from Real Guests:

TheTravelShow: Obviously, Pu'er is known for its famous tea and the tea-growing areas around it. Therefore, any visit to the city wouldn't be complete without a stop here at the Pu'er Tea Museum. We wanted to learn more about this important commodity, so this museum provided us with the answers. We learned about the various local ethnic groups and their relationships with tea, the history of the local area and the Tea Horse Road and also about the process of making the teas. We went here in the morning and admission was free. The staff were also very nice and polite. Getting here is easy by taxi or private car, although it was basically next to our hotel anyway. It's definitely best to come here and learn about the history before visiting a plantation or the Tea Horse Road, as it definitely adds a perspective on everything and enbables you to better understand everything. A good little gem to visit! 🍵🍵🍵

Now we come to another great highlight in the city: Menglian Shwedagon Pagoda.

Menglian Shwedagon Pagoda

Ticket Price: 3 RMB

Recommended Length of Stay: 1-1 Hours

Location: Menglian, Pu'er, Yunnan, China

Menglian Shwedagon Pagoda is located on the Nanlei River in Menglian County, Pu'er City. It consists of 8 small towers surrounded by a main tower. The main tower is 31.68 meters high. Each tower is hung with wind chimes. The light and crisp clanging sound makes people feel a different kind of Buddhist rhyme. The Shwedagon Pagoda and the Menglian Xuanfu Secretary's Office are far from each other, which is a symbol of the unity and progress of the Menglian ethnic groups. According to rumors, the origin of Menglian Jinta is closely related to the Menglian Propaganda Department. Menglian Xuanfu Department Office, called "Hehan" in Dai language, is the Golden Temple. A long time ago, it was felt that there should be a tower that complements the Golden Temple, and this tower was built here in 1997. After the completion of the Golden Pagoda, and the "Golden Palace", it will complement each other. Among the annexed buildings of Menglian Shwedagon Pagoda, there are four square pavilions surrounding the base of the pagoda. "Fang Pavilion" is called "luxury ohla" in Dai language, which means "the pavilion that guides the way", which is a guide for people. The four square pavilions are placed in different directions from east, west, north and south.
