Samala Hotel Bangkok

Sukhumvit Bangkok|0.61km from Nana Fashions
This hotel is brand-new, and has immense potential. It's a shame that I have to write this negative review, but I'm hoping it can spur the hotel to do much better in several areas. We discovered this newly built hotel from a local friend and decided to book four nights during the festive season. Upon arrival, the check-in process took much longer than expected. This was in-part due to the poor command of English by most of the staff. We were assigned a room in Tower A and Tower B. Tower A rooms are much more convenient as the pool and gym are located on the same tower. The rooms itself were great, but there were many small issues which hampered the experience during our stay. For example, the shower drain drains water very slowly, resulting in an overflow everytime you take a shower. The water pressure itself was decent but they need to solve the drainage issues, because we had several different rooms during our stay and every room had the same problem. Other than that, the rooms were great. The power points have USB-A and USB-C inlets, so you don't need an adapter when staying at this hotel, a very thoughtful point. Next, the breakfast buffet was decent. Bangkok hotels are famous for their excellent breakfast buffets. I have stayed in countless hotels in Bangkok, and the benchmark continues to be Centara Grand at CentralWorld for breakfast. Samala's breakfast buffet had a variety of options. The great thing is that the dishes are different every day, so you'll never have a boring breakfast. The bad news is that in terms of taste, its not consistent. For example, there was one morning which had Hainanese Chicken Rice served, and I nearly vomited after tasting it. On another day, there was Green Curry Chicken served, and it was amazing. Speaking of breakfast, I want to highlight the excellent service by Mr. Tong, which I believe is the manager of the breakfast service. Mr. Tong was very attentive and checked-in on us to make sure everything was fine. Interestingly, he spoke much better English than half the front desk staff so perhaps he should be there instead! Last but not least, I want to provide some inputs about the service. It was very inconsistent. Most of the staff at the hotel were very friendly, particularly the concierge, which was amazing at making dining reservations and providing recommendations for lunch/dinner. The front desk staff were also very friendly, and I managed to have a good chat with the front desk manager on several occasions. She had a good command of English, together with a woman who appeared fierce but was very friendly, but the same can't be said for the rest of the staff. They had some of the worse English I have ever seen in any hotel. Bangkok is an international tourist destination, and if the front desk can't get English right, it's better they are moved to other parts of the hotel. Also, some of the staff are extremely stingy when it comes to bathroom amenities. We requested extra Body Wash on several occ

The staff were very friendly and the breakfast buffet was very good! There was a wide selection with a great egg station. The rooms were clean and spacious, the tv was modern and had lots of international channels, the amenities were a bit basic though, for example there’s shampoo and shower gel, but no conditioner. I also had to ask for slippers and shampo. We did a tour one day though and the pickup was before breakfast, so the hotel gave us takeaway breakfasts that were ready waiting for us. My dad was also ill one day and they let us take away food for him too. The pool area on the roof had amazing views. The only downside is the pool shuts at 6pm to clear the deck and turn into a bar. It would be nice if the pool could stay open a bit later.

Every time, who returned to this hotel, I am happy, because, in its simplicity, it makes you feel good, it offers you all the necessary services, cared for and with professionalism. All the staff, of all departments, is friendly and professional. A special thanks to Chef Tony, I appreciated very much, his help, and his kindness, for my breakfast. Thanks, see you soon.

Location, staff and common areas all good to excellent. Price very competitive for area. Room (1 bed premier suite) was mostly good to excellent and well equipped. Bed very comfortable, but certain parts (notably the bath/shower) clearly hadn't been replaced when rest of room refurbished and, whilst serviceable/clean, were rather battered and had seen better days. Not a problem per se, but it did let the room down a bit. Unfortunately the wifi/internet was a problem, frankly it's abysmal by modern standards. It's OK if you just want to send the odd text, but don't plan on sending any attachments by email, logging onto a zoom call or streaming anything. It didn't even hold a connection long enough for a speed test ! From the number of complaints I heard being made to reception this was evidently a hotel wide issue. I hope they can sort this out, as it's a nice hotel, but I'm not sure I'll be back until they do.

Location is pretty much known already here. Walking to and from is either through Soi 6 or Soi 4 (Soi Nana). It's a bit of a walk to get to Sukhumvit the main street for anyone who may be hampered in any way partially because of the conditions of the sidewalks and other issues. I have stayed at this hotel multiple times so it's not unknown to me. The hotel just opened up recently from the pandemic. It was not fully open. Only the front building was available in November. I am a light sleeper and the very front of the building was not a great place for me as some construction noise and vehicle noise could come through for me. Not always, but it was there. I usually get a room facing the pool which is historically quieter and recommend if staying here for light sleepers. The gym was not operational at my stay but supposedly supposed to open up some time in December. It was not advertised anywhere on their website or onlne that it was closed so a little disappointed. The rooms are big. Bottled water is provided daily. Wi-fi was solid. Separate bath and shower. The pillows were very supportive compared to most hotels where there is no support! The bed was probably on the harder firmer side. Not sure if there is an option to get a mattress topper to soften it up. The restaurant space is currently vacant so no room service. There is a 7 Eleven about a minute or two walk to Soi 4. It's a solid hotel.

There are mixed reviews here about this hotel so I wasn't sure what I'd find. I needn't have worried. It is indeed, as some have said, a bit worn with some badly scuffed wooden furniture, but it's nothing that a trip to IKEA wouldn't fix. The tv was something from the last century (no flat screen or usb/HDMI ports), but really, who comes to Bangkok to watch tv. The practical things were fine - almost - and the room was large and clean, and there was a balcony. Aircon seemed to work fine, although for some reason it didn't appear to be as effective in the morning before I checked out. The bed was comfortable, but of course that is up to individual taste. What wasn't practical was that in the bathroom, by the sink, there were large containers of shower gel and another of soap, but nowhere in the shower to put them. Just a small tray for a hotel-sized bar of soap. No excuse for that and just plain silly. Another oddity is the hotel entrance, with a sliding gate for pedestrians to open before continuing to the entrance. When I looked on Google Street View to check its precise location it looked as if the hotel was locked and closed and I thought it was an old Covid-period view. As far as apartment hotels go, I have stayed in places twice as good but four times the price. Overall, I was impressed and it will likely be my regular place to stay in Bangkok.
