Speck Bangkok

Sukhumvit Bangkok|0.15km from Sava Dining
Speck Bangkok is a lovely hostel located at the Soi Sukhumvit 33/1. It is about 3-minute walk from Phrom Phong BTS station Exit 5, turn right when you see the Robin Hood pub. If you are travelling with suitcases, you may like to make good use of the elevator or escalator in the EmQuartier shopping mall at Exit 1. We stayed at a family room for 2 nights. It is a decent room with one double bed and two single beds (bunk bed). This is an ensuite with a clean bathroom. If I have to be picky, the only 3 shortcomings would be its unstable temperature of shower, low washing basin (tall people or elderly people may find it difficult), and the low noise of the aircon. As for the shared toilets, the folding door may be a bit tricky. (Oh right, FYI: they have ladies floors.) That said, they did not affect my very good impression of the hostel. You have to enter the hostel with your keycard, so it may take a little longer when you first arrived. The receptionist was polite and helpful, and the check-in process was smooth. To go to the upper floors, we will need to change to the hostel slippers that would be sterilized regularly. Simple breakfast (with cornflakes, milk, bread and butter) is served on the 2nd floor. There is also a hot dish available upon request. We had pork congee on the first morning and fried egg and sausage on the second morning. If you prefer a full English breakfast, you may go to the Irish pub next door. This Japanese alley is frequented by many Japanese and Westerners. There are a second-hand Japanese bookstore, a pharmacy, 7-11 convenience store and plenty Japanese restaurants (such as the very popular Kobe Tontek) nearby. Opposite to Speck is Watts, a 60-baht store. A minute away is a Japanese supermarket, the very popular bakery Custard Nakamura. 5-minute walk away are two high-end shopping malls (with a wide range of restaurants catering to people with different budgets), EmQuartier and Emporium connecting to the BTS station. Despite the many pubs in the street, I felt safe in the neighbourhood. One thing I really like about Speck is that we could feel respected among our fellow hostellers. Hostellers respect each other's space and wouldn't make much noises in public area. If you are a responsible budget traveller but not at all into partying, this may be a perfect hostel for you.

Barn & Bed Hostel

Sukhumvit Bangkok|0.17km from Sava Dining
My first time to Bangkok and I didn't regret my choice to choose Barn & Bed as a place to stay. A lot of positive point that I can share in regards to hotel location: 1. The location is close to BTS Phrom Phong Station so it is really easy for you to go everywhere. Literally just few walks away from emQuartier Sukhumvit. 2. Lots and lots of food stall and street food nearby, the hostel actually located behind a cafe. So it is pretty convenience if you look for something around the hotel. 3. Seven Eleven is just around 10 meters walk away. The hostel is really homey and quiet. The design also really cute. Staffs are really helpful and can speak English really well. There is computer at reception area if in case you have any business matter. Second floor is for the canteen, where they serve breakfast. Bringing foods to the room is not allowed, therefore if you would like to have some meal, you should have it there. Since I booked for female dorm with 5 beds, my cubicle is located in 4th floor. Tips for all of you, if you bring big luggage like i did, better keep it at the reception and bring only necessary stuffs to your room, since it will be quite a work out to drag your luggage until 4th floor. The room is clean and comfortable. They switch of the AC everyday starting from 1-4 PM, yet they have mini fan in your cubicle so shouldn't be any problem. In your cubicle there is your own locker, which is pretty big to keep all of your valuable items inside. Towels are given upon check in with deposit of 200 Baht. The bathroom is shared in each floor and always well cleaned. In the morning they prepared delicious sandwiches for breakfast, starting from 7 - 10 AM. Besides, there is also some local fruits to try like banana and apple for your morning brekkie. Really nice! I don't know what else to say about this hostel except, perfect. Great service, great value of money, great location, I will definitely comeback here for my next stay at Bangkok and definitely recommend this place for all the travelers.

It is a B&B in a quiet alleyway, but it is very cost-effective. The housekeeping and key card handover staff are very friendly and willing to help. Although there is no meal service, there are many meal options nearby, which is very convenient. There are subway and BTS stations nearby, there is a large shopping mall next to the station, and it takes less than 20 minutes to walk to the terminal department store.

The hotel is owned by Nantra Group. They have enough space in the reception area where you can wait for check in or after check out. Located just 5 minutes from Phrom Phong BTS station. The room does not have wardrobe so better keep all clothes in your bag. Room had mini fridge, toiletries, AC, water bottles, Hair dryer. The room is spacious enough but the TV is very close to the bed. Good value for money and good location in heart of Bkk.

It was very helpful to have a washing machine because it was used for about 1 weeks stay. The room is clean and cute interior. It was not too large and too narrow for twin use. I was sorry that the refrigerator was small if I dared to say. . .

I would give this hotel a thumbs up. For the price the quality and location was very good and I pretty much agree with most of the comments from other guests in regards the facilities, service and the location. I know the area well as I used to live around the corner. The rooms are well lit (I’m a little obsessed with light being a photographer), extremely clean and spacious and with all you could possibly need from a hotel room. I would strongly suggest trying to stay in a room higher up the building to give you some form of view. I was on the ground floor and faced a wall! Again, as a photographer I crave views and light. I didn’t make it the gym and sadly didn’t eat in the café. Yes the pool is a little small but it’s a great plunge pool to escape the city heat and dust. It doesn’t get a great deal of sunlight sadly and apart from trying to push the entire hotel around to chase the sun, there is little you can do about that. The hotel was at first hard to find with my taxi driver. Not sure whether he knew its location and took me on a jolly round the block a few times to raise the taxi fair but the hotel is set back from the road. I speak some Thai and told him I lived up north and so feel he wasn’t trying to rip me off. There is a small hotel sign on the main road on the left as you drive up that soi so please keep an eye out for it. I felt very little welcome from the man on the front desk and this is where the hotel loses some points. I like to get to know the staff a little, share a story or two, build some connection and feel at home. I long for the famous Thai welcome, smile and charm and this was not evident here. It was like checking into some soulless airport hotel and whenever I came and went the lobby was unattended. Obviously this is not a deal breaker but it would really benefit from someone taking care, asking about your welfare and making you feel really welcome as you come and go. It lacks that personal touch that would really make this place special. Location is great as you are not too far from Sukhumvit Rd. and the sky train BTS station of Phrom Phong (8 minute walk). You are close to the utterly wonderful Benchasiri Park. I jogged and worked out in the open-air gym most days in this park. You can watch the basketball players and skateboarders and it’s just the best place to unwind, find some nature and chill. You also have Emporium, the luxury mall right there. You may need deep pockets for much on sale but its great to take a walk and get an all rounded impression of the wonderful diversity of this incredible city. Great and very affordable food court here is a must see and a fabulous cinema. So yes I will be back and hope by then the lobby has someone there round the clock to welcome guests and give it that personal and friendlier touch.
