Hotel Porto Calpe

Calpe|0.18km from Real Club Nautico Calpe
The Hotel Porto Calpe is, without the slightest hesitation, easily the best accommodation we have had in Spain. This three-star hotel provides comfort, cleanliness and attention to detail was beyond the scope of those three stars. We paid a little extra for a front sea view which was worth every penny as the bustling port has character and charm and looking out and up to the Peñón de Ifach was amazing. I have included some photographs taken from our balcony. You may need to click on these for best effect as they are panoramas. The hotel is compact and bright. The room was immaculate. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable. Our linen was changed and the accommodation was thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. We Brits panic a little when there is no kettle in the room, however, one was provided for us without asking. Staying in the port area was nice and central with easy walks, past some amazing archaeology, to the old town and the Playa del Arenal-Bol in one direction and a short hop over to Playa de la Fossa in the other. There is also a brilliant little tourist train which is worth trying. Being in the port area is also a bonus if you like seafood as there are a good number of restaurants here literally specialising in preparing today’s catch for you. The Taberna del Port restaurant which is attached to the hotel is one of the best. We ate here more than once. There is so much to see and do in Calpe. We will certainly return. When we do, we will look for a room at Hotel Porto Calpe.

I will try to cover my points as simply as possible in the hope it might be of help to others. - we went as a family of 4 in Feb 2024 with Jet2. Transfer time was approx 1.25hrs but we were the second stop off in Calpe with no need to go through Benidorm which saved time. - the location of the hotel to the beach is amazing & this is the selling point of the hotel in my opinion - the beach was empty due to the time of year but we got lucky with weather & enjoyed the clean sands & clear water - indoor pool was split into 3 lanes: one for lessons, one for swimmers & one for the hotel residents to use. It was relatively quiet, also nice & warm. Swimming caps are required & can be bought there for 3 euros each - the room itself was incredibly dated. One of the drawers next to the bed had rubbish in it (wrappers, drinks can) so more attention to detail of cleaning would be nice however apart from this the room was clean - room came with a good sized balcony which had a table & chairs, along with a pull out airer / drier - getting to the balcony was difficult with the sofa bed pulled out, there was only squeeze room at the end of the bed to get out the door. - TV shows BBC1 & BBC2 for the British viewers - the bathroom was also very dated but functionable. The shower was over the bath so not great if youre older / unsteady on your feet. - due to the age of the facilities, the showers obviously hadnt been updated to regulation & therefore they are very powerful & hot! Made a nice change in this day & age of energy conservation where showers are normally quite pathetic >< - the staff overall were friendly & helpful. Not much English is spoken but that to me is nice. A little goes a long way when trying to speak the language of the country youre in! - the first night the entertainment went on until midnight. Sadly our room was literally right above where it was going on. The next day we asked what time the music will be on until that night. We were told 1030pm by one member of staff & then 1130-0000 by another. I explained the issue & we were moved onto the other side of the hotel within 15 minutes. There was no issue with the entertainment music however all we could hear on that side were bins being emptied. I imagine in the summer this will be much more frequent & annoying. - we were AI & there was plenty of choice of food for non picky eaters. The food was plentiful & always hot. If you have picky eaters in your group then maybe consider B&B then venture out to eat locally. - there is a Consum supermarket close by which we found really handy for room supplies at very reasonable prices Overall, basic clean hotel but very tired. Excellent location, good food.

The Cookbook Gastro Boutique Hotel & Spa

Calpe|1.35km from Real Club Nautico Calpe
The Cookbook has 2 good quality restaurants and calls itself a boutique hotel. Unfortunately the hotel is not boutique as this brings to mind luxury and quality when in reality the rooms are looking tired and in need of attention. On checking in, first impressions were very good, staff are very pleasant and attentive, the reception area is modern and attractive. We were offered a drink while we were checked in, which was very welcome. Unfortunately once we got to our room, we discovered that the air conditioning was not working at all, it was running but just moving around ambient air. We called reception and they advised that they would call in the engineer whilst we were out for dinner. On our return, we were advised that they discovered that the unit had broken and we would be moved to another room. The replacement room air conditioning was working as it was a brand new unit, but instead of replacing the old unit with this new one, the old unit was left in place on another wall and the new one added as well. So the room contained two air conditioners which looked a bit odd. The hotel corridors were roasting hot, it appears that either the air conditioning is not working in these either or they had been turned off to save money. Our replacement room was looking very tired in places with doors needing sanding and revarnishing and drawers that were falling out if you pulled them out too far. Using the bathroom, we discovered a couple of issues. Firstly the sink tap was falling apart. Secondly and to be honest, totally disgusting was the wet black mould that I only discovered after I ran a bath and had a close up view of the bath tap. We reported both issues to reception and asked that they be resolved. Staff assured us that they would be immediately dealt with and on our return from dinner that evening, we were told that the sink tap had been fixed by the engineer, the mould would be dealt with by room service the following day. We were reassured that staff were on top of the issues and found the sink tap now fully working in the room. We felt confident the mould issue would be resolved the following day but to our disappointment, discovered the tap in exactly the same disgusting state. As were were spending our last night in the hotel and we had already bought it to the hotels attention, we decided to not bother to report a second time, but just list the issue here for other travellers to decide if they want to stay at this hotel or not! Breakfast at the hotel was fine although there was a bit of a lack of choice which other reviewers have complained about. It seems that there was a chef shortage as the receptionist was also doubling as the cook during our stay at the hotel. He advised us that the only thing he could cook was a plain omelette or scrambled eggs. Luckily we were fine with that choice and he cooked them well. I got the impression that most of the money spent on the Cookbook has gone into both restaurants (which are lovely) and
